Moneyball

Brad Pitt takes on the role of Oakland A's manager Billy Beane in this big-screen adaptation of Michael Lewis's book by the same name. The film follows Beane as he uses unorthodox methods in an attempt to put together a winning 2002 team on a small budget. The film is a delight, thanks to an all-star cast and a smart script by Aaron Sorkin. Pitt turns in a charismatic performance, and Jonah Hill really shines as the straight-laced whiz kid who inspires Beane to look at baseball stats in a new light. DVD extras include bloopers, deleted scenes, and featurettes (including commentary from the real Billy Beane and some MLB players).

What's Your Number?

Anna Faris leads this romantic comedy as a woman who decides to track down her former lovers when a magazine article suggests she's had too many sexual partners to ever settle down. Chris Evans plays her charming, womanizing neighbor who helps her with her quest. The film is chock-full of rom-com clichés, but Faris and Evans make a cute onscreen pair, and there are tons of fun celebrity cameos. The DVD includes some deleted scenes.

What's Your Number?: Just Doesn't Add Up

In the opening scene of What's Your Number, Ally (Anna Faris) slips out of bed to adequately primp for that "Don't I naturally look amazing in the morning?"

In the opening scene of What's Your Number, Ally (Anna Faris) slips out of bed to adequately primp for that "Don't I naturally look amazing in the morning?" glow and return before her boyfriend du jour even notices she's gone. If that sounds familiar to you, it's because almost the exact same scene was featured in Bridesmaids. Though we can write that off to unfortunate coincidence, the rest of What's Your Number? continues to borrow so much from other films that the romantic comedy ultimately drowns in overused clichés.

The attractive neighbors-who-will-obviously-fall-in-love here are Ally, an unlucky but optimistic woman who has a dated a string of losers, and Colin, an overgrown frat boy who brings new meaning to the term "love 'em and leave 'em." When the latest issue of Marie Claire informs Ally that her number of lovers is above average and means she's in danger of ever finding "the one," she decides to try again with all of her exes instead of letting her number go higher than 20. After one hilarious, wine-induced failed attempt to track down the guys on the Internet, Colin offers his sleuthing skills in exchange for using Ally's apartment as his personal hideout from his one-night stands. What ensues is a predictable, by-the-book romantic comedy that is barely salvaged by Faris and Evans's chemistry and a long list of inspired supporting players.

What's Your Number? Trailer: Anna Faris Has a Parade of Funny Exes

When I think of Anna Faris, I can't help but remember her most over-the-top movie roles (e.g.

When I think of Anna Faris, I can't help but remember her most over-the-top movie roles (e.g. Just Friends), but she's refreshingly down to earth in the trailer for What's Your Number?. OK, so she's kind of a klutz and isn't afraid to fake a British accent to get a man, but overall she's charming as Ally, a woman who's had tons of boyfriends but can't find the right one. When a friend tells her that a long list of exes means she may never settle down, Ally starts to panic. Determined to keep her number of lovers under 20, she begins revisiting all her old relationships, which run the gamut from a puppeteer to her gynecologist.

One recognizable funny man after another turns up in this preview (Chris Pratt! Andy Samberg! Joel McHale!), but it's obvious from the start that the love story is between Ally and her neighbor Colin (Chris Evans), who's helping with her mission. Though it may be as predictable as any other romantic comedy, the preview had me laughing — and changing my tune about Faris's ability to play someone we can relate to. Watch it when you read more
