Wes Anderson's Guide to Love

As a self-proclaimed Wes Anderson junkie, I'm happy to report that the director celebrates his 44th birthday today.

As a self-proclaimed Wes Anderson junkie, I'm happy to report that the director celebrates his 44th birthday today. His latest film was last year's Moonrise Kingdom, a camp-themed coming-of-age film with all the recognizable Wes-isms fans of the director love, and the young star-crossed lovers at the center of the sweet story really just melt your heart. Set in the '60s on a New England island, the film follows Suzy and Sam, troubled preteens who write love letters to each other before deciding to run away together.

Wes's films always incorporate a romantic coupling, exes, or a love triangle, and the characters involved are usually full of witty advice and observations on relationships. So until we see who's paired up in his 2014 film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, let's look back at the couples and ex-couples from Wes movies along with their lines on love's redeeming, disappointing, and confusing qualities.

Prada has been releasing the Roman Coppola- and Wes Anderson-directed short film for its new fragrance Candy in installments throughout the week, but you can watch them all — and go behind the scenes — right here.

In the film, model Léa Seydoux plays Candy, the human embodiment of the fragrance's modern, feminine feeling. Seydoux compares Candy's story to Francois Truffaut's 1952 film Jules et Jim, which tells the story of a love triangle. In the Prada film, Candy is torn between the affections of two best friends, Julius and Gene. Will either of the men win her affection? Find out here in the gallery.

See All 3 of Wes Anderson's Quirky-Cool Prada Candy L'Eau Shorts

When a sparkling gourmand fragrance is set to be launched, as is the case with Prada's new Candy L'Eau, it makes sense that director Wes Anderson, known for his quirky-cool aesthetic, would be involved.

When a sparkling gourmand fragrance is set to be launched, as is the case with Prada's new Candy L'Eau, it makes sense that director Wes Anderson, known for his quirky-cool aesthetic, would be involved. This week, the Internet has been abuzz with delight thanks to the premieres of three Anderson-directed shorts dubbed Prada Candy L'Eau. Codirected by Roman Coppola, the films star French actress Léa Seydoux of Midnight in Paris and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol fame. We're promised "a real tale in three episodes that encompasses Candy as the most sparkling and unexpected character," and that's just what we get.

As you would expect, the series has the perfect amount of eccentricity woven throughout, with a hint of sweet and sassy thrown in for good measure. And as with any Wes Anderson film, no detail goes unnoticed, from Seydoux's nail polish choices — Essie's Flawless is featured prominently in episode one — down to her unabashed taste for sweets. Prada Candy L'Eau, a playful, seductive scent, includes notes of Italian citruses, sweet pea, benzoin, white musk, and caramel. Look for it out next month in stores, and now, take a look at Anderson's charming foray into beauty.

Wes Anderson Talks Bringing His First-Love Memories to Life in Moonrise Kingdom

Wes Anderson's quirky but heartfelt films have made him one of our generation's defining directors, but surprisingly, this year marked his first Cannes Film Festival premiere.

Wes Anderson's quirky but heartfelt films have made him one of our generation's defining directors, but surprisingly, this year marked his first Cannes Film Festival premiere. We spoke with Wes at the fest shortly after the debut of Moonrise Kingdom, which tells the story of two 12-year-olds in love. He told us the film was equal parts fantasy and memory for him and also discussed whether he had younger versions of two of his most iconic characters — Margot Tenenbaum and Max Fischer — in mind while writing the new project. Moonrise Kingdom is in select theaters now.

Moonrise Kingdom: A Retro Delight

Everything about Moonrise Kingdom is unmistakably Wes Anderson: the hazy cinematography, the clever dialogue, and even the use of the director's favorite actors.

Everything about Moonrise Kingdom is unmistakably Wes Anderson: the hazy cinematography, the clever dialogue, and even the use of the director's favorite actors. Indeed, Anderson isn't leaving his comfort zone as a filmmaker, but Moonrise Kingdom is still a pleasure to watch. Set in 1965, the movie tells the story of Sam and Suzy (newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), preteen pen pals who conspire to run away together. As they set up camp all over an island off the coast of New England, they're being pursued by Sam's scout troop (led by camp counselor Edward Norton), Suzy's parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand), and different authorities (Bruce Willis and Tilda Swinton). Sam and Suzy's experience with young love is sweet and complicated, and made all the more dreamy through Anderson's lens.

The elements might be familiar, but Anderson proves why he's such an admired director with a film like this. It's surprisingly romantic, but there's also a real threat to Sam and Suzy in the wild. Their compelling journey paired with the optical treat of Anderson's style makes Moonrise Kingdom a must-watch for fans of the distinctive director. To find out what else I liked about the film, just keep reading.

Ed Norton, Wes Anderson, and Tilda Swinton Kick Off Cannes!

The Cannes Film Festival is officially underway!

The Cannes Film Festival is officially underway! This evening's Moonrise Kingdom will be the first premiere of the week and the cast got together earlier this morning for their photocall. Wes Anderson was surrounded by his cast, including Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, and Ed Norton. The movie actually centers around a love story between two young actors, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, who were also on hand for the event.

Much of this crew is like family already, since they've worked together on so many of Wes's movies, and they certainly looked excited to show off their new project in this gorgeous setting. We're on the ground in Cannes, too, bringing you all the action. We're taking a look back at the best Cannes celebrity pictures ever to get in the spirit and we'll be updating every step of the way, so follow PopSugar on Twitter and Facebook, too.

Moonrise Kingdom Trailer: Bruce Willis and Edward Norton Go Retro in Wes Anderson's Latest

Ever since we heard Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola were teaming up to write a screenplay, we've been patiently waiting for the trailer to present itself.

Ever since we heard Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola were teaming up to write a screenplay, we've been patiently waiting for the trailer to present itself. Today, we finally got a taste of what Moonrise Kingdom has in store. And although it's live-action flick, Anderson's latest feels a lot more like Fantastic Mr. Fox than The Royal Tenenbaums. Set in a dreamy 1960s haze, 12-year-olds Suzy and Sam fall in love and plot to run away together deep into the New England forest. (This should prove to be no issue since Sam is a Khaki Scout, and his troop leader is Edward Norton.)

In true Wes Anderson fashion, there's an all-star cast with the usual suspects like Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray, along with some new names like Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, and Frances McDormand. Everything about this trailer is romantic and quirky, sweeping us off to another world, presented in a way only Anderson can pull off. To see what I mean, read more

Gwyneth Paltrow and Bill Murray Reunite to Mark 10 Years Since Tenenbaums

Gwyneth Paltrow took the stage at the New York Film Festival for a special event honoring the 10-year anniversary of The Royal Tenenbaums.

Gwyneth Paltrow took the stage at the New York Film Festival for a special event honoring the 10-year anniversary of The Royal Tenenbaums. In the movie, Gwyneth memorably played the kooky character Margot — and on every Oct. 31 since 2001, there have been plenty of people dressed up in Margot Tenenbaum costumes! Gwyneth joined costars Bill Murray and Anjelica Huston for pictures and a Q&A session with director Wes Anderson as well as co-writer Noah Baumbach. She tweeted a photo from the event, captioning it, "Leaving a special 10th anniversary screening of The Royal Tenenbaums at the NY film festival. I can't believe I'm Margot." The evening of reminiscence came for Gwyneth during a break from her latest Big Apple project. Gwyneth's filming Thanks For Sharing with Mark Ruffalo, and work on that project has taken them from Central Park to Brooklyn and Harlem.
