Reid Scott plays the hyperambitious Dan Egan on HBO's Veep, and when the actor stopped by our LA studios recently, he said he based Dan closely on a couple of notable DC power players. One season in, it's clear the HBO series has already gotten the attention of some big names in government. Reid told us Joe Biden himself left the show's star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a memorable voicemail. Veep's second season premieres this Sunday night on HBO, and Reid promised the comedy will riff on even more true-to-life political situations in the episodes ahead — including a gaffe from none other than Hillary Clinton.
Women in Power: Onscreen Female Politicians
Tonight is the Emmy Awards, and the nominees include a number of fictional female politicians. Both Amy Poehler and Julie Bowen are nominated for their characters — Amy as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation and Julie as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family — who campaigned for office last season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is nominated for her role as US Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO's new show Veep. And nominees Julianne Moore and Kristen Wiig have both portrayed real-life politicians, with Julianne playing former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in the made-for-TV film Game Change and Kristen's SNL skits as Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
These ladies are a part of the growing group of female politicians on TV and in films, a trend we're happy to see, especially this election year. Big-name actresses have been getting in on the political parts with Meryl Streep reigning the 2012 award season for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and Sigourney Weaver playing a Hillary Clinton-inspired first lady turned secretary of state on USA's new show Political Animals.
Over the years we've seen everything from serious dramas to lighthearted SNL skits feature women in political positions, and we say keep it coming! The more comfortable we as a country get seeing women as vice presidents and presidents on screen, the more likely it will become a reality. So before we find out which women win the Emmy vote, let's look back at the imagined and real female politicians on TV and in film over the years. Then let's put a woman in the White House for real!
Video: Tony Hale Talks Veep and HBO's Racy Scenes
Tony Hale is currently starring as the very funny, slightly codependent Gary on HBO's Veep, opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I recently sat down with him in NYC to chat about the hit show's second season pickup and his concerns about whether or not he'll have to strip down for the notoriously racy network. Check it out and stay tuned for part two of this interview, where I get him to spill about the upcoming Arrested Development movie!
HBO Renews Girls and Veep

HBO has renewed its fledgling series' Girls and Veep. The network has given each show the green light for second seasons, with ten episodes apiece. Since their respective premieres this past month, the shows have provoked a lot of critical attention, though not all of it positive. With its controversial story lines and realistic sex scenes, Lena Dunham's Girls has put itself at the epicenter of racial and gender debates on television, which possibly contributed to its second season pickup. The political satire led by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep, on the other hand, has enjoyed generally positive, though less explosive, feedback since its first episode two weeks ago. Have you been tuning in to either of these shows?
What Did You Think of Veep?
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is back on the screen as of last night's premiere of Veep on HBO. Louis-Dreyfus plays Selena Meyer, the United States' second-in-command, and is backed by a uniquely unskilled team of political strategists. In the first episode, not only does she botch a speech by accidentally slipping in a very un-PC joke, but her cabinet mistakenly sends an important card signed with her assistant's name instead of her own. I found the premiere to be solid, and the premise has a lot of potential, especially with one of the most talented comic performers of our time at the helm. But I'm curious to hear your thoughts — who tuned in for the series premiere and who's planning on watching episode two next week?

Veep Preview: Julia Louis-Dreyfus Is the President's Right-Hand Woman
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is coming back to the small screen in Veep, but this time she's getting far more political than Elaine Benes ever was. She plays Selina Meyer, the vice president of the United States, and she's no stuffy DC type. Selina is smart, sassy, and seems to always have an S-bomb ready to go, especially for members of her staff, which include Arrested Development's Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky (all grown up since her My Girl days).
The tone of the comedy is pretty irreverent, especially considering that Selina appears to be gunning for the job of her superior, the president (her look of glee upon hearing that he's experiencing chest pains is pretty priceless). I can't wait to see Louis-Dreyfus join HBO's lineup and throw herself into the edgy humor when the new series premieres on April 22. Watch the trailer now after the jump.
