In his new movie Upside Down, Jim Sturgess plays a guy who is facing a pretty big relationship hurdle: his love (Kirsten Dunst) literally lives on another planet, one with gravity that directly opposes that of his own planet. I recently sat down with Sturgess to talk about what it was like to film such a unique sci-fi love story. He admitted that he did get a little nauseated from all the wire work and filming upside down but that it was worth it for a love scene with Dunst that's even better than her iconic upside-down kiss with Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man.
Director Juan Solanas on Filming Upside Down With Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess
In Upside Down, director Juan Solanas creates a love story set on two neighboring planets with double gravity — a unique concept, to say the least. When I recently sat down with the filmmaker in San Francisco, he talked about where he got the idea for the film and what it was like seeing his dream come to fruition. Watch!
The Movie Obstacles That Keep Star-Crossed Lovers Apart
Jack and Rose, Bella and Edward — like Romeo and Juliet before them, these onscreen star-crossed lovers had something standing in the way of their destined love. Soon to be joining their ranks is the pair from Upside Down, Adam (Jim Sturgess) and Eden (Kirsten Dunst), who come from two different worlds with opposing gravity. We've pinpointed a few common obstacles that have plagued iconic movie couples, like distance, age, and culture. Take a look at all the obstacles that keep onscreen lovers apart and the movies that showcase them.
Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess Pull Together For Upside Down
Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess screened their new film, Upside Down, in Hollywood last night. Kirsten wore a black Proenza Schouler number and held onto a patterned Stella McCartney clutch, but ditched the massive ring she sported on her left hand earlier this week. Meanwhile, Jim opted for a simple suit for the premiere.
The film, which opens on March 15, follows two young lovers who fall in love despite living in twinned worlds with gravities that spin them in opposite directions. The trailer for Upside Down was released back in January and shows Jim's character beginning a quest to be with his other-world-living girlfriend. Jim has another romantic film on the horizon as he prepares to film The Big Shoe with Kristen Stewart later this year.
Upside Down Trailer: Gravity Can't Stop Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess's Love
Forbidden love is always tough, but what if your one true love belonged to another world where they were upside-down from you? Such is the case in the trailer for Upside Down, in which Jim Sturgess plays Adam, a young man who has always loved Eden (Kirsten Dunst), despite the fact that she lives on another planet with a gravitational pull that is literally pushing them in opposite directions. As if that weren't enough, Eden's from a more privileged society, while Adam is poor, from the wrong side of the planetary tracks. Despite those considerable odds, Adam is determined to get to Eden and be together (and finally, you know, be on the same level).
I love Sturgess in any kind of romantic drama, but I'm afraid that the whole "gravity can't stop love" premise is going to be beyond cheesy. That said, I can't deny that the special effects look extremely cool, so I'm hoping that helps a little. Upside Down comes out March 15, and you can check out the trailer after the jump.
