Best of 2012: What's the Year's Best Family-Themed Show?

Even the busiest of parents are entitled to indulge in a few hours of quality TV time at the end of a long day.

Even the busiest of parents are entitled to indulge in a few hours of quality TV time at the end of a long day. If you're anything like us, then you find something especially relatable about a family sitcom that approaches the same issues and challenges that we encounter in our own days.

This year saw no shortage of diversity in family programming — we caught up with the Pritchetts and the Dunphys on Modern Family and continued to become engrossed in the ongoing family drama of Parenthood's extended Braverman clan. Up All Night's Reagan and Chris kept us laughing for a second season, and newcomers Guys With Kids and The New Normal took their own unique approaches to family life.

The Up All Night Cast Gives Us a Sneak Peek at Season 2

Up All Night's second season promises some life-altering changes for the Brinkleys, and this week, we swung by the set during the taping of the show's upcoming premiere episode.

Up All Night's second season promises some life-altering changes for the Brinkleys, and this week, we swung by the set during the taping of the show's upcoming premiere episode. Warning: a few spoilers lie ahead! The season kicks off with the unceremonious cancellation of Ava's talk show, putting both Ava (Maya Rudolph) and Reagan (Christina Applegate) out of a job. Meanwhile, fans can expect a new face on the sitcom: Reagan's brother, Scott (Luka Jones). With Reagan and Chris (Will Arnett) trading roles as the stay-at-home parent and the breadwinner, Chris decides to start a business venture with his brother-in-law.

Click through to hear more from the show's cast and producers on what's ahead this year and to see Maya and Christina in action filming a scene from the premiere episode. Up All Night returns to NBC on Sept. 20.

Parks and Recreation

NBC Renews Parks and Recreation, Up All Night, and Whitney

NBC has had mostly good tidings for fans of its comedies so far, renewing 30 Rock and Community, and now it's also given additional seasons to Parks and Recreation, Whitney, and Up All Night.

NBC has had mostly good tidings for fans of its comedies so far, renewing 30 Rock and Community, and now it's also given additional seasons to Parks and Recreation, Whitney, and Up All Night. However, we've also got some cancellation news to report: Are You There, Chelsea, Awake, Bent, and Best Friends Forever have all gotten the ax. All four shows were midseason entrants, and I'm not terribly surprised to see them go. In the meantime, I plan on celebrating the Parks and Recreation news (especially since it's also getting a full 22-episode order) the same way the gang gave it up for Leslie's election victory on the season finale.

Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, and Maya Rudolph Talk Up All Night and Baby #2

Christina Applegate and her Up All Night costars Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph got silly on the press line last night in LA at the Paley Center for Media.

Christina Applegate and her Up All Night costars Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph got silly on the press line last night in LA at the Paley Center for Media. The trio was on hand for a panel about their NBC comedy, during which Christina said that, as a working mom herself, she feels like she's living the same life as her character! The cast also hinted that a second baby might be something that comes up as a possibility for Will and Christina's onscreen couple in the next season of the series. Will was back in LA for the event after hitting up the Met Gala with his wife Amy Poehler on Monday evening. She wore a gown by Fotini, and he sported a tux by Calvin Klein — check out all the pictures from the Met Gala in our gallery!

You're living through middle-of-the-night diaper changes, homework issues, and sibling rivalry, and so are the families on some of our favorite shows of 2011.
