Pitch Perfect

Anna Kendrick stars as a college freshman who reluctanty joins a female a capella group. Though she's initially skeptical about joining leaders Chloe (Brittany Snow) and Aubrey (Anna Camp) and their medley of quirky peers in singing dated songs, she eventually comes around. Soon she realizes her knack for song mixing may benefit the team and help them defeat the competing boys' a capella group. Though some may find the comedy to be formulaic, the songs are enjoyable, as are supporting actors Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin. The DVD comes with deleted scenes and a couple featurettes.

Trouble With the Curve

Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake headline the impressive cast of this baseball dramedy. Gus (Eastwood) is a grumpy old baseball recruiter embarking on his last scouting trip as the clock ticks on his waning eyesight. He's begrudgingly joined by his daughter, Mickey (Adams), with whom he shares a rocky relationship. While on the road, a good-natured fellow recruiter Johnny (Justin Timberlake) takes an interest in the uptight Mickey. Trouble With the Curve tries to go in so many directions but never fully commits, and though it has its moments, the end result is boring and cheesy. The DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette with Adams and Timberlake.

The Three Strikes Against Trouble With the Curve

Clint Eastwood hasn't been in a movie since 2008's Gran Torino, and he hasn't been in a movie directed by anyone other than himself since '93.

Clint Eastwood hasn't been in a movie since 2008's Gran Torino, and he hasn't been in a movie directed by anyone other than himself since '93. So is Eastwood in capable hands with first-time director Robert Lorenz in Trouble With the Curve? Not quite. Eastwood takes center stage as Gus, an old-school baseball scout whose career is threatened by the fact that he's going blind. Though he's far too stubborn to admit it, Gus needs his daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams), more than ever, but their relationship has been broken since the death of his wife when Mickey was just a child. When Mickey learns of her father's condition, she tags along with Gus on what could be his last scouting trip to observe high school ball players. With an excellent cast (that also includes John Goodman and Justin Timberlake), Trouble With the Curve should be a home run, but it strikes out one too many times. Here's why:

  1. It tries to go in too many directions. Trouble With the Curve is a drama about the damaged relationship between Gus and Mickey. Oh, wait. It's a romantic comedy about a young scout named Johnny (Justin Timberlake) who is trying to win Mickey's heart by loosening her up. No, I'm sorry, it's a comedy about a crotchety scout who is losing his eyesight and therefore may be forced into retirement, letting his cartoonish, villainous colleague (Matthew Lillard) take over. Timberlake is charming, and Eastwood and Adams have palpable tension that makes their relationship feel real, but all these elements aren't knitted together closely enough to make the story compelling as a whole.
  2. It's boring. You'd think with all those plot lines, there'd be precious little time left over for sluggish baseball scenes, but you'd be wrong. And I love a good baseball movie! Unfortunately, the inevitable "heartwarming sports showdown" shows up way too late, and the buildup is incredibly dull. The film is overstuffed with scenes of scouts making small talk at high school ball games, which makes the payoff only moderately satisfying.
  3. It's all kinds of cheesy. Timberlake gets away with being a total goofball in this movie (he even dances!), but Eastwood falls victim to the sappier moments of the film. Eastwood delivers his grouchy one-liners to laughter-inducing perfection, but those moments are few and far between. Even though we've seen him play the cranky old man before, it's much easier to swallow Gus taking cheap shots than it is to see him crooning "You Are My Sunshine" to a tombstone (yes, that actually happens).

Justin Has Costar Amy and Fiancée Jessica at His Big Premiere

Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams teamed up with director Clint Eastwood last night for the LA premiere of their Trouble With the Curve, which hits theaters tomorrow.

Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams teamed up with director Clint Eastwood last night for the LA premiere of their Trouble With the Curve, which hits theaters tomorrow. The baseball-themed picture is Justin's latest to arrive in theaters. He's spent much of the last couple months on location in Puerto Rico making Runner, Runner with costars Ben Affleck and Anthony Mackie. On the astroturf carpet, reporters spoke to JT about the picture and the possibility of another album. Justin said of making new music, "[It's] a really big deal. For me, personally, when I do sit down and decide to do it, it's just a special thing. . . . I don't know that I can pump them out every year."

Yesterday brought a welcome reunion for Amy and Justin, who were seen hugging and posing for photos with Clint outside the theater and at the afterparty. Amy made the rounds in a scarlet dress from designer Roksanda Ilincic and Casadei shoes. Justin had two very special guests — his fiancée, a Dolce&Gabbana-clad Jessica Biel, stepped out for the fun Hollywood night, as did his mom, Lynn Harless.

Trouble With the Curve Trailer: Clint Eastwood Is Grumpy, Loves Baseball

Playing a grumpy old man must be like slipping on an old shoe for Clint Eastwood, who embodies a curmudgeon yet again as an aging baseball scout in Trouble With the Curve.

Playing a grumpy old man must be like slipping on an old shoe for Clint Eastwood, who embodies a curmudgeon yet again as an aging baseball scout in Trouble With the Curve. He elects to go on one last recruiting trip, accompanied by his daughter (Amy Adams), with whom he shares a rocky relationship. Lucky for her, she gets more than just backhanded compliments from her father out of the trip; a handsome fellow recruiter (Justin Timberlake) shows up on the scene and takes an interest in her.

Call me a sucker, but my heart swelled just a little bigger while watching the trailer (likely because Phillip Phillips's "Home" plays, and that song turns me into a puddle of mush). While I wouldn't have necessarily paired Adams and Timberlake, I like them a lot together, and the tension between Adams's character and her father gives the film just enough depth to explore. Trouble With the Curve opens Sept. 21, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.
