For the second week in a row, exorcism horror movie The Possession came in at number one at the box office, earning $9.5 million from moviegoers. That's not saying much, considering it was the worst weekend at the box office since 2008. Shia LaBeouf's Lawless took second with $6 million, while The Words — the only new release to place in the top five — earned third with $5 million. The Expendables 2 hung in fourth place with $4.6 million, followed by The Bourne Legacy with $4 million.
Movie Sneak Peek: The Words and Bachelorette
If you were a struggling writer and you just happened upon a spectacular manuscript no one knows about, would you pass it off as your own? That's what Bradley Cooper does in The Words, one of this week's new releases. If you'd rather head to theaters for a comedy, try Bachelorette. The dark comedy about a crass group of girls on the eve of their friend's wedding features Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, and Adam Scott. Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper Reunite For The Words
Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana teamed up to premiere The Words in LA last night. Zoe wore a gold Elie Saab number while Bradley looked dapper in a Tom Ford suit. The onscreen couple are reportedly back together in real life as well after a brief split in March. Bradley talked about Zoe on the carpet saying that she "brought so much to the movie and a depth to it that we didn't really bargain for." In turn, "the movie became very romantic" and "much deeper." Their costars, including Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, and Ben Barnes, were on hand to support the project, which hits theaters on Friday. James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly Brook, as well as Perrey Reeves, popped up on the red carpet, too. One person absent from the event was leading lady Olivia Wilde, who was recently spending time in North Carolina with boyfriend Jason Sudeikis.
Bradley Cooper Heads Home to Philly For a Big Premiere
Bradley Cooper smiled big at the Philadelphia premiere of The Words last night. He posed with fans on his way into the event, which was held in Bradley's hometown, and later met up with writing and directing duo Lee Sternthal and Brian Klugman. Bradley made the trip to Pennsylvania following promotions for the project in NYC. He taped a segment for Today after sitting down on Live! With Kelly last week. Bradley brought his dog, Charlotte, on the morning show, chatted about rescuing her, and shared that "she's great." He'll continue press for the project, in which he stars alongside former real-life girlfriend Zoe Saldana, as the Sept. 7 release date nears.
The Words Trailer: Bradley Cooper Has Got a Story For You
Get ready to bend your brain as you watch the trailer for The Words, starring Bradley Cooper as a writer. His character, Rory Jansen, suffers from writer's block until he has a breakthrough and finally produces a best-selling novel. The only problem is that he stole the story from former soldier (played by Jeremy Irons), who put his life story to words years before Rory finds his writings. As you watch the preview that doesn't really come across, because the trailer starts out telling Rory's story, paralleling it with Irons's character in flashback (played by Ben Barnes). And then, randomly, Dennis Quaid and Olivia Wilde show up, because apparently Quaid's character wrote Rory's plagiarism tale. Got it?
None of that is really clear as you watch, nor does it make sense as to why a cheesy, romantic-comedy-esque song comes on in the final moments. Let's hope the movie itself is far more coherent than this first look, because I know I won't be missing a chance to see Cooper and his baby blues as a struggling artist. The film comes out Sept. 21, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.
Love Is in Full Bloom For Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana
Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana were caught in a lip-lock on the set of The Words in Montreal on Tuesday. He's coming off the success of The Hangover Part II, which has already grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and she recently returned from a fashionable stay in Cannes, France. On screen, Bradley's making out with Zoe, but off the clock he's been linked to costar Olivia Wilde. Olivia and Bradley were spotted together last month at Justin Timberlake's SNL afterparty and again more recently on the West Coast though her rep maintains that Olivia Wilde is single and not dating Mr. Cooper. Olivia Wilde wasn't around for Bradley and Zoe's loved-up scenes, but she was cozied up to another good-looking guy earlier this week to celebrate Ryan Reynolds's Details magazine cover. Zoe has her own real life love to tend to, since she's engaged to actor Keith Britton.

Bradley Cooper Has a Way With the Words

I hope Bradley Cooper learned a few things about playing an author in his upcoming thriller Limitless, because those skills could come in handy for his newest project. The actor has signed on for The Words, where he'll play a writer who hits the high point of his career by stealing another man's work. (Naturally, the secret comes back to haunt him). Jeremy Irons is in talks to costar while Tron: Legacy writers Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal will direct.
Cooper is still finding his footing as a leading man, and I'm happy to see that he's reaching for heavier stuff rather than staying within the confines of action films and comedies (not that I have anything against The Hangover). What's your take — can Cooper handle meatier roles or is he better suited to showing off his charm and pretty face?
