Sequels dominated the box office this weekend, but it was Robert Downey Jr.'s reprisal of a famous detective that had the most success. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows came in first at the box office with $40 million, followed by animated sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, with $23.5 million. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment in the franchise, opened in limited release and came in third with $13 million. New Year's Eve earned the No. 4 spot with $7.4 million, while The Sitter rounded out the top five with $4.4 million. Roman Polanski's Carnage also opened in limited release, earning a modest $85,700.

Box Office: New Year's Eve Has a Faint Sparkle

It was an incredibly lackluster showing at the movies this weekend, with New Year's Eve taking the crown, but only pulling a meager $13.7 million in the weakest box office weekend since 2008.

It was an incredibly lackluster showing at the movies this weekend, with New Year's Eve taking the crown, but only pulling a meager $13.7 million in the weakest box office weekend since 2008. It did manage to beat Jonah Hill's new comedy, The Sitter, which followed in second with $10 million. Breaking Dawn Part 1 was finally knocked out of the top spot, and settled for third with $7.9 million. The Muppets took fourth place with $7.1 million, and Arthur Christmas rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.

Movie Sneak Peek: Young Adult, New Year's Eve, The Sitter

The first December weekend at the box office has a lot of promise: you can check out a whole slew of stars in new romantic comedy New Year's Eve, or see Charlize Theron playing a nasty former teen queen in Young Adult.

The first December weekend at the box office has a lot of promise: you can check out a whole slew of stars in new romantic comedy New Year's Eve, or see Charlize Theron playing a nasty former teen queen in Young Adult. If neither of those comedies are up your alley, maybe you'd prefer to see Jonah Hill do his schtick in The Sitter. Whatever film you're headed to, get a sneak peek at the week's offerings before you hit the theater.

The Sitter Review: 5 Similar Movies You're Better Off Watching

The Sitter may be inspired by Adventures in Babysitting, but it's certainly not an improvement on the 1987 classic.

The Sitter may be inspired by Adventures in Babysitting, but it's certainly not an improvement on the 1987 classic. The plot is very similar: a babysitter and three kids set out on a simple mission to get something, and along the way, they get mixed up with a bad guy and have to have it all resolved in time to get the children in bed. But a recycled plot is not the only thing that's unoriginal about The Sitter — the movie feels cobbled together with parts of other, funnier films. To save you a trip to the theater, I've named five movies below that share elements with The Sitter — but are far better — that you should watch instead.

  1. Superbad: Noah is the exact same character that Jonah Hill played in Superbad: horny, self-centered, and obnoxious but witty. Even if you're a Hill fan, there's no reason to go out of your way to see him doling out the same shtick. Just watch the far superior Superbad to get your comedy fix.
  2. Go: Sam Rockwell plays the crazy drug dealer that Noah is indebted to after one of his charges accidentally steals drugs from him. While Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, when it comes to attractive but dangerous movie drug dealers who want their money back, Timothy Olyphant has the market cornered in Go as Todd. He has far more dimension than Rockwell's character, and he manages to be threatening in a Santa hat, no less.
  3. Uncle Buck: Unlikely male mentor? Check. Three precocious charges? Check. John Candy is the ultimate man babysitter in this 1989 comedy. It's believable that Buck has formed actual meaningful relationships with his nieces and nephew, whereas in The Sitter, the kids' issues are shoehorned in, and we're supposed to buy the fact that Noah solves each of their problems in one single night.

The Sitter Trailer: Don't Trust Jonah Hill With Your Kids

Jonah Hill introduces the the red-band trailer to his upcoming comedy The Sitter by calling it the "filthiest R-rated babysitting movie ever made."

Jonah Hill introduces the the red-band trailer to his upcoming comedy The Sitter by calling it the "filthiest R-rated babysitting movie ever made." The fact that the preview opens with a woman climaxing leads me to believe Hill isn't exaggerating, and that his adventures in babysitting will make those of Elisabeth Shue back in the '80s look tame by comparison. Whether or not a raunchy take on caring for children will work is another question.

Hill's character, a broke college student, initially resists his mother's advice to babysit in order to make some extra cash, arguing that adult men don't babysit. Perhaps that's because as a babysitter, Hill leers at his clients and threatens their children with murder. His main concern is hooking up with Ari Graynor's character (the aforementioned climaxer), and he ends up dragging the kids he cares for around in a cross-town pilgrimage for a booty call. Along the way, there's a lot of cursing, and a run-in with drug-dealing criminals.

The movie seems in line with the recent bout of R-rated comedies that often rely on shock value for laughs, so I'm curious to see how far the three young kids will be pushed for the gags in this movie. The film comes out this December, but you can see how you feel about Hill's babysitting abilities (warning: NSFW!) when you read more
