Hart of Dixie and Nikita Renewed, Secret Circle and Ringer Axed

The CW isn't just renewing Gossip Girl for next season; the network is also bringing back Hart of Dixie for a second season, as well as a third season for Nikita.

The CW isn't just renewing Gossip Girl for next season; the network is also bringing back Hart of Dixie for a second season, as well as a third season for Nikita. It's not happy news across the board though; freshman series Ringer and The Secret Circle are both dead and buried. On the bright side, The CW has a full plate of promising new shows, including the much-anticipated Carrie Diaries, so there's still plenty to look forward to next Fall.

News just broke that the CW picked up Ringer for a full season, and now the network has revealed its other freshman dramas, Hart of Dixie and The Secret Circle, will get full seasons as well. The Secret Circle, which stars CW alum Britt Robertson, has scored the highest ratings out of the network's new dramas (and is currently the second highest rated show on the entire network), while Hart of Dixie, which stars Rachel Bilson, has benefited from its Gossip Girl lead-in. All three dramas will get 22 episodes for their premiere seasons. Have you been tuning in?

The second episode of The Secret Circle has Cassie — and us — getting better acquainted with her powers as a witch.

The second episode of The Secret Circle has Cassie — and us — getting better acquainted with her powers as a witch. While she has no idea what she's doing, the coven is still aggressively courting her. Nevertheless, she resists them as best she can and even tries to make a go at a normal friendship with the class president.

Diana and Adam try to convince her that she can harness her powers by joining them while the mysterious older generation of witches try to gain their lost powers by any means necessary. To find out what evil deeds they are up to this week, and if Cassie gives in to her fellow teenage witches, just keep reading.

Did The Secret Circle Intrigue You?

The CW premiered The Secret Circle this week, a new series about teenage witches.

The CW premiered The Secret Circle this week, a new series about teenage witches. It stars Britt Robertson as Cassie, the new girl in town who discovers she's a descendant of witches and is invited to complete a coven made up of high schoolers. The show sets up a lot of mystery surrounding the back story behind the coven, and a menacing character who seems to be dead set on guarding it, but was it enough to pique your interest? Or perhaps you're more interested in seeing if the sparks between Cassie and Adam (Thomas Dekker) develop into something more serious? Either way, I want to know if you think you'll keep watching The Secret Circle.

Pilot Scoop: The Secret Circle

Tonight you can finally watch the premiere of The CW's drama The Secret Circle, the new series based on the novels of L.J.

Tonight you can finally watch the premiere of The CW's drama The Secret Circle, the new series based on the novels of L.J. Smith (who also wrote its lead-in, The Vampire Diaries). The witch-centric new show is from Kevin Williamson and stars CW alum Britt Robertson, and if you're interested in checking it out tonight, make sure to read my pilot scoop below for a hint about whether it might be your new favorite show.

What it's about: When teenager Cassie (Britt Robertson) loses her mother to a fire, she moves in with her grandmother in her mom's hometown. A group of classmates takes an odd interest in her, and they quickly reveal why: Cassie is a witch, descended from one of the witch families in town, as are each of them. Cassie completes their coven, and they want her to join them so that they can get the full use of their powers.

Where it works: The pilot is deliciously creepy, thanks to a mysterious villain on the scene (Gale Harold). The show also does a good job of setting up an interesting story that seems to have a lot of potential. Plus it's great to see the endearing Robertson back on her own show after Life Unexpected was canceled.

Where it doesn't: This is a show about teen witches, so the camp factor has the possibility to be high. Some of the dialogue the characters use to set up the premise is pretty cheesy, but maybe it won't be so bad once the show establishes what it's about.

Am I hooked? Oh yeah. After just one episode, I wanted to know more about the town's rich witch history and the sinister characters.

When is it on: Thursdays at 9 p.m.

The Secret Circle's Mythology Isn't the Same as The Vampire Diaries

If you look forward to The Vampire Diaries every week, we may have found your second favorite show.

If you look forward to The Vampire Diaries every week, we may have found your second favorite show. The Secret Circle is debuting on the CW this Fall after Diaries, and not only is the witchcraft series also based on books written by the same author (L.J. Smith), it has the same creator in Kevin Williamson. He stopped by TCA today, along with the show's producers and stars Britt Robertson, Thomas Dekker, Gale Harold, and Natasha Henstridge. The cast and showrunners talked about its parallels (and big differences) to The Vampire Diaries and why there probably won't be a crossover episode.

  • Williamson talked about adapting L.J. Smith's novels, and said that he likes her as a writer because she "taps into the stuff that I love, the coming of age and teen angst and then mixes it with genre." He gleefully listed off the elements Smith uses, like betrayal, deceit, friendship, loyalty, mayhem, and said, "All that is my happy place." When asked whether there would be an inevitable crossover episode, Williamson said he didn't know if we'll ever see one for a couple of reasons. First, he was insistent that The Secret Circle look like its own show and "be in its own world," and perhaps more importantly, he said that the witchcraft mythology in The Secret Circle doesn't connect to the mythology in The Vampire Diaries.
  • Robertson plays Cassie, a girl who discovers she's a witch and gets recruited by other teen witches to join the titular secret circle. Cassie, like Robertson's previous character Lux on Life Unexpected, struggles to adjust to living in a new town, and Robertson said she can relate to that feeling because she's also had to move around a lot as an actress. Cassie's character finds a place, though; Robertson says that "the circle ends up being her pseudo-family . . . for a while."

Get a Preview of The CW's New Series The Secret Circle

If The Vampire Diaries doesn't bring enough supernatural drama to your Thursdays, then you'll be happy to know that the CW's new series The Secret Circle will pick up the slack this Fall when it premieres in the time slot after Diaries.

If The Vampire Diaries doesn't bring enough supernatural drama to your Thursdays, then you'll be happy to know that the CW's new series The Secret Circle will pick up the slack this Fall when it premieres in the time slot after Diaries. Like that show, the series is also based on L.J. Smith's novels, but instead of vampires, the stars are witches.

Britt Robertson plays Cassie, a teen that moves to a new town when her mother dies, and discovers that her ancestors were witches . . . and now so is she. Soon she's initiated into a coven of teens with similar powers, and Cassie learns more about her destiny and evil elements that haunt the town. I loved Robertson as Lux on Life Unexpected, and if she can channel that angst into her new witchy role, then I'm hooked. Take a look at the preview clips, when you read more
