Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are partners in this gritty, realistic police thriller from Training Day screenwriter David Ayer. Set on the dangerous streets of Los Angeles, the movie follows the officers on their daily rounds as they become immersed in the center of a deadly drug ring. Gyllenhaal and Peña are both excellent in the film, and though their performances are worth seeing, the faint of heart (and those who get queasy with handheld camera footage) might want to avoid this raw drama. The DVD includes deleted scenes, director commentary, and several featurettes.

The Paperboy

Director Lee Daniels adapted this mystery novel for the big screen, with star power from Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, and John Cusack. Investigative reporter Ward (McConaughey) enlists the help of his brother Jack (Efron) to prove a death-row inmate (Cusack) has been falsely accused of murdering the local sheriff. Kidman picked up SAG and Golden Globe nominations for her sultry performance as the woman in love with the inmate. A featurette, interviews, and the theatrical trailer come with the DVD.

Liam Neeson's thriller sequel Taken 2 took the top spot at the box office this weekend, hauling in $50 million in its debut. Last week's top earner, Hotel Transylvania, dropped to second place, with $26.3 million. Pitch Perfect made $14.7 in its first week in wide release, followed by Looper with $12.2 million. Frankenweenie took in $11.5 million in its opening weekend to round out the top five. The week's other new releases, The Orange and The Paperboy, took in $180,000 and $110,000, respectively.

The picture apparently required Zac to show a bit of skin — he confessed to spending a lot of time on set wearing just underpants! Zac stars in the film with Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey. Matthew shared some advice with Zac, and apparently offered serious words about how going shirtless can affect one's career.

It's time for your shirtless Zac Efron break with The Paperboy trailer, but be warned, this is not a wholesome outing for the heartthrob. In the 1960s-set drama directed by Precious's Lee Daniels, Efron plays Jack, the younger brother of reporter Ward (Matthew McConaughey). Jack is helping Ward investigate the case of Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack), who is accused of murder and sitting on death row. Sexing up the whole situation is Charlotte (Nicole Kidman), a vivacious blonde who claims to be in love with Hillary, despite the fact that she's never met him before. However, Charlotte's devotion to Hillary doesn't prevent her from seducing young Jack, which seems to lead him to some violence amid the steamy Southern backdrop.

The Paperboy looks sexy, grimy, and pretty bananas, though I love seeing Kidman sashaying around on screen and acting quite crazy. Even if you're not into the story, it's worth the watch just to spy Efron slow-dancing with Kidman in his tighty-whities. The movie comes out Oct. 5, but you can watch the trailer after the jump.

The trio was up early this morning for a photocall, where Nicole wowed in a red dress. She changed into a gorgeous Lanvin gown for this afternoon's event, which also brought out Heidi Klum in Marchesa. John Cusack and director Lee Daniels were on hand, as was Macy Gray. There are only a few days left at the Cannes Film Festival, but before things wrap up, Robert Pattinson will hit the red carpet for the second time to show off Cosmopolis.

Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Matthew McConaughey's morning photocall comes after an appearance on the French show Le Grand Journal just yesterday. Zac opened up about filming mostly in his underwear, saying, "I don't think I was supposed to feel comfortable. It's like life. This character is supposed to be learning the ways of the world, and that can be very uncomfortable. But it's also exciting." The trio will be back in the spotlight later today, when they premiere their movie at the Grand Palais.

Matthew, meanwhile, was looking handsome for his latest event following an appearance with fiancée Camila Alves at Baoli Beach Tuesday. Nicole traveled to the South of France during a break from filming her newest movie, The Railway Man, in Scotland.
