What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Get ready to log some major hours in front of the TV.

Get ready to log some major hours in front of the TV. The latest DVD releases include an HBO series and a '90s hit show, both of which will have you pressed into the couch for days. But if you're looking for less of a time commitment, we have something for you too. Take a look!

Toy Story 3

After a decade-long hiatus, Buzz and Woody return for another heartwarming Toy Story installment. When Andy prepares to leave for college, the toys wind up in a day care center and must fight their way back home. The film maintains the same creative humor that we've come to expect from the franchise, along with a message of growing up that's sure to strike a chord with adults. DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes look at Pixar, a sneak peek at the Toy Story-themed playland at Hong Kong Disneyland, and the short film "Day & Night" which played before the film in theaters.

The Pacific

Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and the team behind the hit HBO series Band of Brothers deliver another in-the-trenches look at World War 2, this time from the perspective of the soldiers battling the Japanese in the East. The epic drama boasts excellent performances (watch for a cameo from Fringe's Anna Torv), and it's easy to get swept up in the characters' romances. But be warned: the gritty, savage portrayal of battle is often hard to watch. DVD extras include profiles of the Marines dramatized in the series and historical context for each episode.

HBO rolled out the red carpet last night for the LA premiere of The Pacific, the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks produced war miniseries that starts airing next month. True Blood heartthrobs Ryan Kwanten, Alexander Skarsgard, and Stephen Moyer were all in attendance though Michelle Forbes filled in on the arm of Stephen in the absence of his fiance Anna Paquin. Alexander was a welcome face at New York Fashion Week events earlier this month, though his recent frequent date Kate Bosworth sat out yesterday evening's party as well. Cutie newcomer to the HBO family How to Make It in America's Bryan Greenberg was there to return the support after recently premiering his own show in NYC.

Are You Interested in Projects About World War II?

Usually when Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg team up to tell stories about World War II, the results are pretty spectacular — witness Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers.

Usually when Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg team up to tell stories about World War II, the results are pretty spectacular — witness Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. So I'm expecting a lot from The Pacific, the pair's follow-up miniseries for HBO. The project doesn't have an air date yet, but a lot of work has clearly gone into this 10-episode chronicle of three marines fighting in the Pacific: it started shooting in 2007, and it's rumored to have a $200 million budget.

The trailer's out now, and it looks like a slick and epic project. But it also got me thinking: World War II has been popular fodder for years now, not just for Spielberg and Hanks but for lots of other film and TV storytellers. Do you think there are still more compelling stories to be told about that era? Or do you tune out at the very mention of victory gardens and D-Day?
