What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Need a Summer entertainment refreshment?

Need a Summer entertainment refreshment? Check out a new DVD release today, whether you're in the mood for something girlie or a bit darker.

The Last Song

Miley Cyrus stars in this Nicholas Sparks-adapted romantic drama about a teen girl who reconnects with her father over a climactic Summer at the beach. She falls in love, tragedy ensues, you know, the typical Sparks formula. Although I was impressed by Cyrus's acting, this is a pretty sappy flick. It might just make for a perfect rental if you're jonesing for a good cry. The extras on the DVD include Cyrus's music video for "When I Look at You," a set tour, deleted scenes, and an alternate opening scene.

Dexter Season Four

Dexter's new season comes back on September 26 (watch the season five trailer here), so now is your chance to catch up on season four. The story arc revolves around Dexter's relationship with the Trinity killer and it ends with one of the most shocking TV finales ever. Both Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow were nominated for Emmys for this particular season, so it's also a good time to watch in case one of the men takes home the gold. The DVD extras include cast interviews.

Box Office: Audiences Make a Date With Tina and Steve

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are taking their collaboration all the way to the bank.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are taking their collaboration all the way to the bank. Their comedy Date Night earned the top spot at the box office over the weekend with $27.1 million — well deserved, in my opinion, though some insiders are arguing that the race is too close to call just yet. That's because the film narrowly squeaked by last week's No. 1 blockbuster, Clash of the Titans, which took second place with $26.8 million.

Titans was followed close behind by How to Train Your Dragon with $25.3 million for third. Finishing out the rest of the top five was Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? with $11 million, and Miley Cyrus's The Last Song which brought in $10 million.

Box Office: Clash of the Titans Slays the Competition

Seems that the gods are mighty hard to defeat.

Seems that the gods are mighty hard to defeat. The remake of Clash of the Titans took charge of the weekend's box office, bringing in a hefty $61.4 million for first place. Even Tyler Perry who usually earns the top spot with his films proved to be no match. His Why Did I Get Married Too? came in second with $30.1 million.

Last week's winner How to Train Your Dragon bumped down a couple of notches to No. 3 with $29.2 million, while Miley Cyrus's The Last Song took fourth with $16.2 million. Keep in mind, however, that since The Last Song debuted on Wednesday, its actual five-day total is around $25.6 million. Finishing out the top five with $8.2 million was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

The Last Song: Hits the Wrong Notes

Not even two months after Dear John took theaters, Nicholas Sparks pulls out his toolbox of cliches again for the weep fest that is The Last Song.

Not even two months after Dear John took theaters, Nicholas Sparks pulls out his toolbox of cliches again for the weep fest that is The Last Song.

The story follows rebellious teen Ronnie (Miley Cyrus) who comes to live with her divorced father (Greg Kinnear) for the Summer. With her black belly shirts, the movie is out to prove this girl is no Hannah Montana, as she stomps around slamming doors despite pleas from her little brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) to be nice. Ronnie is a gifted pianist, accepted into Julliard, but she stopped playing when her parents separated as a show of defiance to her father. As you can guess from the title, she takes to the ivories once again before our story is over.

In fact, most of the storyline — as with the majority of Nicholas Sparks tales — is blatantly predictable. But there are still a couple surprises in the mix, Cyrus's performance being one. To find out what I mean, read more
