The Butler Trailer: See Famous Actors Play Our Most Famous Presidents

It's only May, but the trailer for Lee Daniels's The Butler already has me thinking about award season.

It's only May, but the trailer for Lee Daniels's The Butler already has me thinking about award season. The drama stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a butler who serves eight US presidents over the course of his three decades at the White House. Working through particularly volatile moments in the country's history, he gains a unique perspective on the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and more. Oprah Winfrey plays Cecil's wife, marking the first time she's been on screen playing a character other than herself since 1998's Beloved.

Whitaker and Winfrey aren't the only big names in the movie. The laundry list of stars playing presidents is fascinating: Robin Williams is Dwight Eisenhower, James Marsden is John F. Kennedy (with Minka Kelly as Jackie Kennedy!), Liev Schreiber is Lyndon Johnson, John Cusack is Richard Nixon, and Alan Rickman is Ronald Reagan. Not all the actors resemble their presidential counterparts, so I'm curious to see how this pans out. The film opens Oct. 18, and you can see the trailer after the jump.

Mariah Carey Joins Oprah, Lenny, and Cuba on The Butler

Mariah Carey stepped out of her trailer yesterday on the New Orleans set of The Butler joining co-stars Oprah Winfrey and Lenny Kravitz.

Mariah Carey stepped out of her trailer yesterday on the New Orleans set of The Butler joining co-stars Oprah Winfrey and Lenny Kravitz. The Lee Daniels-directed film has drawn a wide range of major stars including Cuba Gooding Jr., John Cusack, Robin Williams, and James Marsden as well. Lenny's been sharing personal snaps from Louisiana including a candid of Oprah and Cuba together in a scene. It appears Daniels called upon friends and former colleagues to contribute to the film; in fact, Mariah was one of the stars of his 2009 best picture nominee, Precious.

In addition to starting a new big-screen project, Mariah also shared a sneak peek at her forthcoming music video "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" last night on BET's 106 & Park. Mariah's also prepping to embark on her first season of American Idol. Rumors are swirling that Nicki Minaj may join her behind the judging table in 2013 when the show returns for its twelfth season. There's been no confirmation from Nicki or the show, but sources close to the show say a deal is in the works — are you excited to see Nicki on American Idol?
