Savages: 3 Reasons You Should See It — And 3 Reasons You Shouldn't

Director Oliver Stone's new project Savages hit theaters this week, and it's an intense thriller featuring three of Hollywood's young talents.

Director Oliver Stone's new project Savages hit theaters this week, and it's an intense thriller featuring three of Hollywood's young talents. Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson star as Chon and Ben, friends since high school who have perfected the science of growing weed. Their business has attracted a lot of attention, some of it welcome — as from O (Blake Lively), the beach-haired beauty they share in bed — and some of it a little more sinister. Threatened by the big slice of pie the duo is taking out of her profit, Elena (Salma Hayek), the brutal boss of a major Mexican cartel, essentially offers to buy them out. When they rebuff her because of their high moral fiber (they're the "good" drug dealers), Elena retaliates by capturing their most prized possession, O. Before you write it off or buy your ticket for Savages, check out my reasons why this movie might be for you . . . or might not.

Why you should see it:

  1. Stone's take on modern drug dealers is hilarious — in a good way. If there's one thing I learned about ruthless drug lords from Savages, it's that they love Skype. It's a little disconcerting to see the same technology I use to talk with my mom put to use by a vicious marijuana queen-pin, but it's also pretty amusing. Elena's right-hand man, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), is also a man of modern convenience. He enjoys iced beverages from Starbucks and frequently eats from the refrigerators of the men he's been ordered to kill. I chuckled when one of the goons in charge of keeping O captive in her prison cell is seen mesmerized watching Ashley Hebert moan to her girlfriends on The Bachelorette.
  2. It's visually beautiful. Chon and Ben live in a stupidly expensive Laguna Beach abode overlooking the ocean, the house that their eco-friendly marijuana empire built. The lush beach town is ripe for sweeping coastal shots, but even the way Stone shoots the intimate scenes is pretty magnificent.
  3. Taylor Kitsch shows his butt. I knew this would be an R-rated movie and I expected some nudity, but I thought it would probably be from Lively. I was admittedly taken aback to see Kitsch bare his impressive assets in the opening moments of the film. I'm not complaining, but it's lucky the theater was dark, because my face was crimson.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively Steals The Show in Yellow Gucci

Blake Lively once again was the center of attention in her one of a kind yellow Gucci dress at the NYC premiere of Savages last night.

Blake Lively once again was the center of attention in her one of a kind yellow Gucci dress at the NYC premiere of Savages last night. She was joined by costars including John Travolta and Taylor Kitch for the event. Blake's red carpet fashion for Savages has been amazing so far, with her strapless bombshell Zuhair Murad at the LA screening receiving the most attention. She is also making the talk show rounds and her interview with David Letterman airs tonight. Savages actually hits theaters on July 6, so perhaps Blake will be able to take time off to celebrate the Fourth of July with her Canadian love Ryan Reynolds when she's done promoting the film.

Battleship: Needs a Lifesaver

I don't remember aliens making an appearance in my own childhood sessions with Battleship, but I suppose when you try to make a toy into a feature-length film, you're afforded a few liberties.

I don't remember aliens making an appearance in my own childhood sessions with Battleship, but I suppose when you try to make a toy into a feature-length film, you're afforded a few liberties. Unfortunately, the producers of Battleship may have spent too much time finding creative ways to explode things and not enough time on a plot, ending up with underutilized actors, in a wishy-washy destruction story.

Battleship starts out in 2005, when the US establishes the Beacon Project, an effort to reach out to potential life forms on a planet that has a similar climate as the Earth. The government sets up a powerful signal on Hawaii capable of sending transmissions to the foreign territory. Little do they know the frequencies are being received, and not by friendly folks. Enter brothers Alex (Taylor Kitsch) and Stone (Alexander Skarsgard). Stone is clean-cut and responsible while Alex is generally a mess. We first meet them in a bar scene that turns to Alex breaking into a convenience store to steal a chicken burrito for his future girlfriend, Sam (Brooklyn Decker). Thanks to Kitsch's surprising physical comedy skills, the scene is the highlight of the movie. It all goes to the aliens after that.

Brooklyn, Rihanna, and Alexander Team Up to Premiere Battleship

Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Alexander Skarsgard hit the blue carpet in LA last night for the West Coast premiere of Battleship.

Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Alexander Skarsgard hit the blue carpet in LA last night for the West Coast premiere of Battleship. The ladies headed west after a big start to the week in NYC, where they both attended Monday's Met Gala. Brooklyn wore Tory Burch to the Big Apple fashion fest, while Rihanna donned a crocodile-print Tom Ford.

Battleship isn't out until next Friday, but the gang have been all over the world doing press for the last month. Brooklyn, Alexander, and costar Taylor Kitsch brought the picture to Europe, then Rihanna linked up for a quick tour of Asia and a stop in Hawaii for the junket. Brooklyn's doing double-duty, too, since her What to Expect When You're Expecting comes out the same day as her movie with Alexander and Rihanna!

Battleship's Taylor Kitsch Admits He Loves Living Where People "Don't Give a Sh*t" About Hollywood

Taylor Kitsch takes the helm of this month's Battleship as a rookie Navy officer who finds himself charged with saving the world after aliens attack.

Taylor Kitsch takes the helm of this month's Battleship as a rookie Navy officer who finds himself charged with saving the world after aliens attack. We caught up with the actor at a recent press day for the action-packed adventure, where we chatted about his relationship with director Peter Berg and his adopted hometown of Austin. Taylor decided to put down roots in Texas after shooting FNL and said he especially loves that people there "don't give a sh*t" about fame or Hollywood. During our chat, we also asked Taylor if he's made any grand gestures for love, given that his character gets tasered and arrested in the process of tracking down a late-night burrito for the object of his affection. See his answer in the video and catch Battleship in theaters on May 18!

Rihanna joined her Battleship costars Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Kitsch, and Brooklyn Decker, as well as director Peter Berg, at Friday's photocall for the film. The stars returned to Hawaii, where they shot the movie last Summer, for the US press junket. They posed in front of Pearl Harbor's USS Missouri Memorial with naval vet Gregory D. Gadson — stay tuned for our exclusive interviews with the cast!

Rihanna flashed her midriff for the photo op. She also shows skin in her new video, which is out today. "Where Have You Been" is already a hit on the charts, and with Rihanna in a bikini, the video is sure to be just as popular. Rihanna, Brooklyn, Alexander, and Taylor head back to the mainland next week and are expected to attend an LA premiere on May 10 before the May 18 opening.
