What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

Cancel your evening plans, because Inception is out on DVD today!

Cancel your evening plans, because Inception is out on DVD today! Now you can watch the film again and (hopefully) get some insight on the film's complicated twists and turns. If you're looking for something more family-friendly, we've got that too.

Inception

Christopher Nolan's mind-bending thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, a man who makes a living by infiltrating the subconscious of others. He takes on the biggest job of his career when he agrees to plant an idea in a man's head in exchange for personal gain. As Cobb and his team (including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page) sink further into the minds of others, the film gets more twisted — and more intriguing. I thought the film was mesmorizing and thought-provoking, and many of you have already deemed it Oscar-worthy. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes featurettes, but on the Blu-ray, you'll also get an animated prologue and "Extraction Mode," which explains how Nolan shot key scenes.

Shrek Forever After

The green ogre returns for the final installment in the franchise. This time, Shrek's growing a bit tired of his life as family man and local celebrity, prompting him to make a deal with Rumpelstiltskin for a day of privacy. Unfortunately, he gets a lot more than he bargained for and finds himself stuck in an It's a Wonderful Life-ish alternate reality where his best friends don't know him and Rumpelstiltskin is the king. While reviews for the movie were mixed (most critics argued the studio should've put the kibosh on the series before a fourth chapter), the likable characters might make it worth a watch at home. Bonus features include deleted scenes and featurettes, including a look at the making of Shrek the Musical.

Box Office: Toy Story 3 Reaches For the Sky, Breaks Records

Woody and Buzz are back!

Woody and Buzz are back! It's a happy return for the Toy Story franchise, with Toy Story 3 raking in $109 million in its opening weekend — the highest grossing debut ever for Pixar. It booted The Karate Kid, which fell from the top spot to No. 2 with $29 million.

Bradley Cooper and the boys of The A-Team came in third $13.7 million, followed by Get Him to the Greek with $6.1 million for fourth and Shrek Forever After in fifth with $5.5 million.

The other new release of the weekend, Jonah Hex, bowed with $5 million for an eighth place spot – disappointing, but not that surprising given its scathing reviews (including my own).

Box Office: Karate Kid High Kicks the Competition

I bet Will Smith is mighty proud of his son this morning!

I bet Will Smith is mighty proud of his son this morning! His son Jaden's reboot of The Karate Kid ran away with the box office this weekend, earning $56 million (it's a surprising sales number at least to me, since I wasn't that jazzed about the movie). The family flick beat out the other big release, The A-Team, which came in second with $26 million.

Last weekend's champ Shrek Forever After slipped to No. 3 with $15.8 million. Get Him to the Greek and The Killers rounded out the rest of the top five with $10.1 million and $8.1 million, respectively.

Box Office: Shrek Stays on Top

You can't keep an ogre down!

You can't keep an ogre down! Shrek Forever After dominated once again and landed at the top of the box office for the third week in a row with $25.3 million.

The animated flick handily beat out this weekend's newcomers: Get Him to the Greek took the second spot with $17.4 million, while Killers came in third with $16.1 million. Last week's second runner up, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, fell to fourth place with $13.9 million, beating Sex and the City 2 once again, which just barely made it into the top five with $12.6 million.

Box Office: Sex and the City Is No Match for Shrek

UPDATE: According to estimates through the holiday, Prince of Persia actually bested Sex and the City 2, taking in $37.8 and $37.1 million, respectively.

Forget Sex and the City 2 versus Prince of Persia. Despite the hype surrounding both of those films, this Memorial Day weekend belonged to Shrek Forever After. All together now: Huh?!

The family film continued its hold on the top spot at the box office for a second week with $43.3 million. That leaves Sex and the City 2 in second place with $32.2 million (a number that fell short of insiders' estimates); Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came in third with $30.1 million. Something to keep in mind, however: SATC opened on Wednesday at midnight, which means if they had counted Thursday's sales as part of the weekend total, the ladies may just have been able to eke out a first place finish.

Iron Man 2 took fourth with $16 million and Robin Hood rounded out the top five with $10.3 million.

NYC Movie Theaters Cite $20 IMAX Tickets as "Mistake"

I ranted last week about movie theaters charging $20 for entry into an IMAX 3D film, but according to AMC theaters, that price point was a mistake.

I ranted last week about movie theaters charging $20 for entry into an IMAX 3D film, but according to AMC theaters, that price point was a mistake. In a Wall Street Journal article posted over the weekend, an AMC spokesperson says they'll be issuing refunds to anyone who threw down their hard-earned Jacksons to see Shrek Forever After. He says:

Unfortunately, a limited number of theaters posted incorrect pricing for Shrek Forever After, which we immediately corrected. Any guest who purchased a ticket at the incorrect price can visit guest services for a refund.

Although some moviegoers may have experienced a bit of sticker shock when they got to the theater, it didn't stop them from forking over their cash — Shrek took the top spot at the box office, forcing Iron Man 2 into second place.

Box Office: Shrek Lumbers to the Top of the Chart

It was a fairy-tale weekend for Shrek Forever After, which earned the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend with an impressive $71.2 million.

It was a fairy-tale weekend for Shrek Forever After, which earned the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend with an impressive $71.2 million. Following in the monster's footsteps was Iron Man 2, which pulled in $26.6 million, then Robin Hood in the third spot with $18.7 million.

Romantic drama Letters to Juliet secured the number four title with $9.1 million, with Queen Latifah's rom-com Just Wright completing the top five with $4.2 million.

Unfortunately, new release MacGruber missed the top five and came in at six — maybe audiences listened to the poor reviews.

Would You Pay $20 to See an IMAX Movie?

The day has finally arrived — tickets to see an IMAX movie have hit the $20 mark.

The day has finally arrived — tickets to see an IMAX movie have hit the $20 mark. Although the first film to charge that much for a ticket — Shrek Forever After — is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, there's no way I'm shelling out that much dough to see the movie on a bigger screen.

In fact, spending the $15 to see Avatar in IMAX 3D seemed like too much (however, you do get a lot of movie there), not because I'm cheap, but because sitting in a theater full of popcorn-chomping, cell phone-answering, sometimes snoring moviegoers just doesn't seem worth it. Especially since I never get the same 3D experience in IMAX as I do on a regular movie screen — it just doesn't translate well to the mega-size format. Maybe I'm jaded by my previous theater experiences, but seriously — $20? Have you hit your movie ticket price limit? Is an IMAX movie worth the $20 price?

Cameron Diaz went with a short red number yesterday for the LA premiere of Shrek Forever After — reminds us of the amazing pink mini she wore for Shrek 3 three years ago! She was the lone female star of the movie to pose on the green carpet with Antonio Banderas, Mike Meyers, and Eddie Murphy. Cameron is home in California after a busy few weeks of travel that included time in NYC with Alex Rodriguez and Chicago, where she recorded an episode of Oprah with Tom Cruise. They were there to discuss their film Knight and Day and she also shared her passion for cooking oatmeal for breakfast. With Cameron on the West Coast, Alex Rodriguez had to find another date for a party on Saturday — his 5-year-old daughter Natasha was on his arm to celebrate his new Gotham magazine cover.
