What Is the Best Comedic Movie of 2010?

Laughter is the best medicine, but which film brought in the biggest dose this year?

Laughter is the best medicine, but which film brought in the biggest dose this year? 2010 was filled with the ever-popular dude comedy, but there was also a Sex and the City flick and Easy A to prove that guys aren't the only ones getting big laughs. There may not be a standout like last year's The Hangover, but what do you think is the best comedic movie of 2010?

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

This week I've got movies from all different genres in my bag of tricks — some romance, some comedy, and a little action. If these don't suit your fancy, you can also check out James McAvoy and Helen Mirren in The Last Station or Alexis Bledel in The Good Guy.

Remember Me

Robert Pattinson leaves his fangs at home to play Tyler, a troubled college student who is grappling with his brother's death and his opulent background. When he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), his feelings about his family and love are tested as he falls deeper into his first meaningful relationship. I thought the film was a bit emotionally manipulative, but it's a decent love story that's worth a rental just to see Pattinson take on something different from Twilight.

She's Out of My League

Jay Baruchel plays lovably geeky airport security employee Kirk in this raunchy romantic about a guy who — you guessed it — dates a girl that's a little out of his dating range. Kirk's trials and tribulations dating gorgeous Molly (Alice Eve) provide plenty of opportunities for his onscreen buddies to make fun of him, but I found their relationship sweetly relatable. The humor rings true with both guys and girls, and there are a ton of laughs even if it's not on the same level as a Judd Apatow film.

DVD extras include deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and a seven-minute short called "Devon's Dating Show!"

Box Office: Wonderland Is Still the Top Attraction

Alice in Wonderland continues to cast its spell on the box office.

Alice in Wonderland continues to cast its spell on the box office. The Tim Burton spectacle earned $34.5 million, besting the weekend's newcomers. Of those, children's flick Diary of a Wimpy Kid pulled off a narrow upset over the heavily promoted Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler starrer The Bounty Hunter. Kid took the second place spot with $21.8 million, while the latter garnered $21 million for third.

Despite a disappointing number of only $6.1 million, the bloody Jude Law thriller Repo Men squeezed its way into No. 4. Returning rom-com She's Out of My League finished out the top five with $6 million.

Kristen Stewart fans may be a bit disappointed over the figures for The Runaways. The film took in $803K from its small release of 244 theaters for a per theater average of $3,291 — not terrible, but not good either. It's still slated to go nationwide come April, so here's hoping it manages to pick up some steam.

Box Office: Audiences Spend Another Week in Wonderland

The other guys didn't stand a chance.

The other guys didn't stand a chance. Despite best efforts from Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson to unseat Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton and crew took in a whopping $62 million in the film's second week at the box office. Those numbers bring the movie's intake to a grand total of $208 million so far, making it the highest gross ever for a Burton project.

The new releases of the weekend filled the second through fourth place spots, with Matt Damon's Green Zone faring the best with $14.5 million (pretty disappointing considering the film's budget is estimated around $100 million).

In a somewhat surprising fight for third place, the Jay Baruchel comedy She's Out of My League beat out Robert Pattinson with $9.6 million to Remember Me's $8.3 million (perhaps The Runaways will outperform it after all!).

Rounding out the top five was Shutter Island with $8.1 million.

5 Things to Love About Dating a So-Called Average Guy

In the new movie She's Out of My League, underdog Kirk (Jay Baruchel) manages to catch the eye of über-hot Molly (Alice Eve).

In the new movie She's Out of My League, underdog Kirk (Jay Baruchel) manages to catch the eye of über-hot Molly (Alice Eve). While this may be a great premise for a flick, how does dating an "average" guy play out in real life? I would argue that there are benefits to being in a relationship with someone more unassuming and less chiseled than the McDreamy or Don Draper type. Here are five reasons why you shouldn't shy away from the average Joe.

  1. He knows his strengths: Guys who recognize that their looks are less than perfect know what they are and aren't good at. Great-looking guys may think that everything they touch turns to gold, when often that isn't the case. Exhibit A: Dr. Drew Baird on 30 Rock.
  2. He's not an attention whore: He isn't used to nonstop attention, so in group situations he allows you to shine and isn't always trying to steal the spotlight.
  3. It's all about you: He's a great listener and is OK with spending a mellow night in instead of flaunting his ability to get in to all the trendy spots.
  4. You don't have to stare down the competition: Out and about you're not dealing with other women checking him out or, worse, flirting with him in front of you. Who cares if you're sometimes mistaken for his sister and/or platonic friend?
  5. He's well rounded: Since he can't float by on his smashing good looks, chances are, he's better cultivated his humorous personality, guitar-playing skills, or art history knowledge.

Get the Look: She's Out of My League

She's Out of My League, out today starring Jay Baruchel, looks über-cute — like one of those predictable romantic comedies I can't resist.

She's Out of My League, out today starring Jay Baruchel, looks über-cute — like one of those predictable romantic comedies I can't resist. While it may not be winning an Oscar next year, it certainly deserves applause for the set design. I would totally move right into this living room. But better yet, it doesn't look very hard to recreate. This sort of minimalism is something I strive for, but I enjoy shopping for accessories too much to ever make it work. I love how the graphic wallpaper, cherry blossom branches, and interesting coffee table catchall bowl add a more intricate, girlish element to the streamlined, masculine furniture. With silverish gray and sandy browns, and a little bit of pink, the palette is perfect, too. Want to see some products that will help you get the look of this stylish room?

She's Out of My League: Has a Dirty Mind and a Heart of Gold

A movie like

A movie like She's Out of My League comes along every few years: average-looking guy scores a major babe and has no idea why. His friends don't know why either, and somehow the fact that the woman may not be as shallow as they are never crosses their minds.

The average guy here is Jay Baruchel as Kirk, and his ravishing conquest is Molly, played by British stunner Alice Eve. When Molly leaves her phone at airport security and TSA officer Kirk bends over backward to return it to her, they begin an awkward, funny, cute, and at times horrifying courtship. The film is marketed as a romantic comedy between these two opposites, but it's also very much a buddy comedy that gives an unexpected amount of significance to the conversations male friends have about their love lives.

I was expecting to sit through a cliched gross-out comedy, but She's Out of My League surprised me. It's plenty raunchy, but it's very sweet too, and not just about the relationship. To hear why, just read more

Jay Baruchel and Nate Torrence Talk Dating, Their Own Number Ratings, and Scenes They Hate

In She's Out of My League, Jay Baruchel plays a guy who inexplicably starts dating a gorgeous girl who friends have rated a "hard 10."

In She's Out of My League, Jay Baruchel plays a guy who inexplicably starts dating a gorgeous girl who friends have rated a "hard 10." Nate Torrence plays one of his friends, and the two very funny actors recently sat down to talk about the movie, becoming friends on set, and the controversial scenes they wish had never made it in the film.

  • On whether they knew each other and their other costars before filming:
  • Nate: No, we didn't know each other at all. But that's what's nice, you spend six weeks in a city, you get along pretty well. That's what was cool with this movie — the four guys specifically, TJ [Miller], Mike Vogel, Jay and me. We got to hang out quite a bit and we like each other. What we've been talking about is how that really plays into the movie, that you can kind of tell that we all got along and have the same sense of humor, and that makes for some fun moments.
Jay: It's kind of cheesy, but my happiest thing about the movie is that I came away from it with a bunch of best friends. I really enjoy this kid's company like crazy. I have to say I was a bit of a fan of his before the movie.
    Nate: It's not like I had this long resume . . .
Jay: I can do every Capital One character.
Nate: And I would do Million Dollar Baby for him.

Opposites Attract: 10 Unlikely Movie Couples

Hollywood loves a good case of yin and yang when it comes to playing matchmaker.
10 Mismatched Movie Couples

Hollywood loves a good case of yin and yang when it comes to playing matchmaker. Case in point: this Friday's She's Out of My League which pairs a perfect 10 dream girl named Molly (Alice Eve) with a nerdier counterpart who ranks at more of a five, Kirk (Jay Baruchel). Before those two try their luck at love, perhaps they should borrow a tip or two from these unusual onscreen pairings who tested the dating odds.
