What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

Tom Cruise brings his signature grin and action-star style to Jack Reacher, the big-screen adaptation of the popular Lee Child series. Cruise plays a former military officer called out of retirement when an accused sniper asks for him by name. The opening shooting scene is immensely disturbing, but the film works as a mystery, and Cruise fans will be especially pleased to see the actor turn in another action-packed performance.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven is the latest adaptation from renowned romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. Abuse victim Katie (Julianne Hough) is looking for a clean start. She finds herself in a small seaside town being courted by a charming single dad (Josh Duhamel), but she's plagued by an ex who is intent on tracking her down. Unrealistic and filled with cheesy clichés, the film itself is a lot less tempting than Duhamel. The DVD comes loaded with extended scenes and a (much-needed) alternate ending.

Though it sunk to second place last week, Identity Thief won the box office this week, earning $14.1 million. Dwayne Johnson's new release Snitch took in $13 million and second place, while animated flick Escape From Planet Earth came in third with an $11 million haul. Romantic tearjerker Safe Haven came in fourth with $10.6 million, and A Good Day to Die Hard rounded out the top five with $10 million. The week's other new release, horror flick Dark Skies, earned $8.9 million.

The pair are promoting Safe Haven in the UK ahead of its March 1 release there and stepped out together for a photocall yesterday. They were joined by author Nicholas Sparks, who has been making the press rounds with the film's stars.

Josh made the trip overseas with his wife Fergie on Tuesday, just after the couple revealed the exciting news that Fergie is pregnant. She covered up her baby bump at the airport but couldn't contain a smile as she headed to her gate with Josh.

It is an exciting time for Josh, who announced via Twitter that he and wife Fergie are expecting their first child yesterday. Fergie accompanied Josh to the UK where he is promoting the film with his other leading lady Julianne ahead of its March 1 release there. The film already debuted in the states on Valentine's Day, just after Josh and Julianne stepped out for Safe Haven's NYC premiere together.

A couple of the week's other new releases, Safe Haven and the animated film Escape From Planet Earth, followed up with $21.4 million and $16 million, respectively. Warm Bodies fell to fifth place with $9 million, and fellow fantasy romance Beautiful Creatures came in with just $7.5 million.
