Run-DMC to Get the Notorious Treatment

Having written the screenplay for the Notorious B.I.G.

Having written the screenplay for the Notorious B.I.G. movie, writer Cheo Hodari Coker is now gearing up to bring more rap stars' lives to the big screen. He's signed on to adapt Bill Adler's book Tougher Than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC — The Authorized Biography for film which "will explore the history of hip-hop's first superstars: Joseph 'Run' Simmons, Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels and Jason 'Jam Master Jay' Mizell, who was shot to death in his Queens studio in 2002." Here's more:

With such hits as "It's Like That," "It's Tricky," "My Adidas" and "Walk This Way," Run-DMC exploded from the Queens neighborhood of Hollis onto the international stage with the help of future mogul Russell Simmons, Rev. Run's brother. An early MTV staple, the group influenced much of rap's future royalty.

"It's an extraordinary rags-to-riches journey that I'm eager to bring to the screen," [producer Dallas] Jackson said. "And I'm hoping to have Run, DMC and Russell Simmons' involvement. This will be a big movie about the 1980s hip-hop movement that took over the world."

I gotta say, this is a story I'm genuinely intrigued to see play out in biopic form, especially in this day and age when we can look back and see how hip-hop would be a totally different scene without these guys. Do you think this project sounds interesting? Are there other major players in music history who you'd like to see get a movie of their own?

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced this year's class of nominees, and there are some big names on the list. The Hall of Fame is following up last year's class, which featured the likes of Madonna, Leonard Cohen, and John Mellencamp, with a group of nominees including Metallica, Run-DMC, and the Stooges.

In total, nine acts made the short list. In addition to the names above, guitarist Jeff Beck, singer Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War, Chic, and Bobby Womack will be on the ballot. The five acts with the most votes will be named to the Hall of Fame in January and officially inducted in April.

A couple of interesting things: First, neither Stevie Ray Vaughan nor Bon Jovi made the ballot this year, which would have been the first year both were eligible (at least 25 years must have passed since the act released its first single). And second, no Beastie Boys? They were short-listed last year, but they were left off this time around.

Which of the potential nominees do you think is most deserving?

Fab Flash: Pastry Sneakers by Rev Runs' Girls

You may recognize Angel and Vanessa Simmons from MTV's reality show "Run's House."

You may recognize Angel and Vanessa Simmons from MTV's reality show "Run's House." The hip hop princesses, who launched their own sneaker line, Pastry on Sunday, are the daughters of ex-Run-D.M.C. star Reverend Joseph "Run." The pair's first collection, dubbed Cake, is comprised of four sneakers: Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Mousse, Sprinkles and Red Velvet. Each style is designed to look like the cake it represents. That's not where the sweetness ends, though. Each shoe, $65, comes with lip gloss that tastes and smells like the respective sneaker. Next up is a collection called Fab Cookie! I wonder what goodies will be whipped up for that line...

Although the line hasn't hit online stores yet, it has been reported that DrJays.com will soon be carrying it. If you're a sneaker gal, be sure to snag one of the delicious Simmons concoctions!

Playlist: Cool Christmas Songs

It's time to break out the macaroni-and-glitter ornaments you made in second grade and plunk a candy cane in your hot cocoa, because Christmas is officially right around the corner.

It's time to break out the macaroni-and-glitter ornaments you made in second grade and plunk a candy cane in your hot cocoa, because Christmas is officially right around the corner. To help you prepare, I've devoted this week's Playlist to Cool Christmas Songs.
