50/50

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this film as a 27-year-old man who finds himself diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. As he struggles with his mortality, his best friend (Seth Rogen) helps him to face the reality of his situation, which is where many of the film's laughs come from. With a powerful performance by Gordon-Levitt, the movie is a huge success, especially considering that it manages to find so much humor in a subject that's rarely portrayed as funny. DVD extras include deleted scenes, featurettes and a commentary track with Rogen and director Jonathan Levine.

Real Steel

Hugh Jackman plays a dad and former boxer in this futuristic action flick about boxing robots. When his estranged son shows up and wants to help assemble a robot to fight in the ring, father and son bond. While there are some exciting sequences, the family-friendly flick is also pretty predictable and cheesy. Extras on the DVD include a blooper real and two featurettes.

The scary flick took in an impressive $54 million, earning the record for highest Fall opening ever and best opening for a horror movie ever. Reel Steel was left in the dust, settling for a distant second with $11.3 million, while Footloose slipped to third with $10.9 million. Newcomer The Three Musketeers took fourth place with $8.8 million, and The Ides of March stayed in the top five by taking in $4.9 million.

Box Office: Footloose Almost Knocks Real Steel Off Balance

It took fancy footwork to win the box office this weekend, but it was boxing and not dancing that got the victory.

It took fancy footwork to win the box office this weekend, but it was boxing and not dancing that got the victory. Real Steel got to the top of the box office for the second week in a row with $16.3 million. It just barely edged ahead of dance reboot Footloose, which earned $16.1 million in its first weekend out. Fellow new release and remake The Thing came in third with $8.7 million. Political drama The Ides of March stayed in the game at the No. 4 spot with $7.5 million, followed by Dolphin Tale with $6.3 million. Unfortunately, the Steve Martin/Jack Black/Owen Wilson comedy The Big Year didn't crack the top five; it came in ninth with a meager $3.3 million dollars.

Real Steel: Real Predictable

When you sign up to watch a movie about boxing robots, chances are you want to see mechanical carnage, and plenty of it.

When you sign up to watch a movie about boxing robots, chances are you want to see mechanical carnage, and plenty of it. In Real Steel, Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie, a man who makes his living piecing robots together and sending them to the ring, so the potential for spectacular robotic clashes is high. But when Charlie's estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) shows up on his doorstep, what you get instead is a predictable father-son story that's a swing and a miss.

The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when machines have taken over the role of boxers because humans are hungry for more gore. The premise is a bit hard to believe — how do bolts win over blood, and why would sports fans be more invested in a machine than a human? On that note, the film barely lets the audience begin to connect with the beat-up, underdog robot Max uncovers in a junkyard, paying more attention to the relationship between the boy and his dad. When Max just so happens to share his father's passion for robot boxing, the film establishes a convenient means for the pair to bond.
