In the Near Future, Price of Food Will Drastically Increase

Food prices have been on the rise for some time now, but an upcoming study to be published Wednesday warns that they will increase even more.

Food prices have been on the rise for some time now, but an upcoming study to be published Wednesday warns that they will increase even more. According to Oxfam, the price of food, mainly staples like corn, will double by 2030. A number of factors — the depletion of natural resources, climate change, growing global population, etc. — have caused more poverty in the world and the poorest people, who already spend the majority of their income on food, will be the first to suffer.

To solve the situation, Oxfam is recommending a complete overhaul of the world's food system. The chief executive said, "We are sleepwalking towards an age of avoidable crisis. One in seven people on the planet go hungry every day despite the fact that the world is capable of feeding everyone. The food system must be overhauled." It's easy to call for action, but the change that is necessary will probably not come quick enough. Are you concerned about a global food crisis?

Fashion in 50 Seconds 5/12

This Saturday was World Fair Trade Day, a time for fashionistas everywhere to feel guilty about their fast fashion habits.
OxFam boutiqueThis Saturday was World Fair Trade Day, a time for fashionistas everywhere to feel guilty about their fast fashion habits. Except for British shoppers who now have the Oxfam Sustainable Fashion Boutique to enjoy. The new shops will sell items created out of donated goods, Fairtrade clothing and accessories made by volunteers as well as the more traditional second-hand clothing. But there are dissenters in the eco-fashion movement. Some people are still happy to claim it just isn't very stylish. Community partner Susie Bubble however thinks its all just a bit too shiny. It seems like the Valentino brand isn't quite as dramatic as the post He Who Will Not Be Named years at Gucci. In fact, after the retirement of Valentino the house seems positively bullish. Ironically no one felt that great about Alessandra Facchinetti at Gucci. Musical chairs anyone? Mulberry is into collaborations. They have artists collaborations planned for each month this summer (this month was flower arrangements with neighbor McQueen's) the most anticipated of which is surely going to be The Artist's Tote, a collaboration with Fred Gallery on Vyner Street where five artists will interpret the Mulberry tote.

How Much Would You Pay to Attend the SATC Movie Red Carpet Premiere?

In recent months, celebrities have been raising awareness for the relief and development organization Oxfam by collaborating on eBay auctions for things like Shakira's clothes and radios signed by Tom Hanks, as well as tickets to the red carpet premieres of movies like Mamma Mia! and He's Just Not That Into You. Just a few days ago, a woman from Japan had the highest bid for a trip to the Manhattan premiere of the Sex and the City movie. The bidding started at $0.99 and the winning bid was for $52,100, all of which will go to Oxfam.

As the winner, she receives a pair of tickets to the premiere, arriving via chauffeured car service after having her hair and makeup done at Manhattan’s Prive Salon. At the premiere, she'll have an on-camera "meet and greet" with Kristin Davis. And she also gets a pair of Jimmy Choos in her size.

I'd say this is a pretty sweet package. Of course, most of us don't have $52,000 to spend on an online auction for movie premiere passes, but I could definitely envision mega-fans of Sex and the City paying some hefty sums for this kind of thing. What would be your cutoff for a package like this? To walk the red carpet, if not with then at least near the glamorous ladies of Sex and the City and to attend the premiere of the film with them?
