Pilot Scoop: Detroit 1-8-7

I've been giving you a sneak peek of the new Fall shows over the past several weeks, but guess what? We're nearing the home stretch! With only a few series left to cover, I bring you my latest pilot scoop: ABC's Detroit 1-8-7. Read on to decide whether you'll watch, and then print out your TV calendar to keep track.

What it's about: Sopranos vet Michael Imperioli plays Louis Finch, a star homicide detective in Detroit's worst crime area with a reputation as an eccentric. Tight-lipped Finch keeps to himself, but when he's paired up with a chatty rookie partner (Jon Michael Hill), he's forced to show the kid the ropes.

Where it works: Whereas most procedural dramas get weighed down by heavy subject matter, Detroit 1-8-7 includes offbeat comedic moments thanks to Finch's strange methods for doing business (case in point: he talks to his partner over the phone, even when the guy is in the same room). It's also refreshing to have a crime show take place in a locale that's not New York or LA.

Where it doesn't: The series was originally shot mockumentary style, but producers later decided to ditch the format. The problem is that the pilot still includes a few character looks to camera and shaky shots that just don't jive with the rest of the show. The '70s music also gives it a slightly campy feel, and the titles are a bit cutesy. Basically, you have conflicting elements that don't mesh.

Am I hooked? I do appreciate some of the humor, but the show needs finessing.

When is it on? Detroit 1-8-7 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 10 p.m.

Stars Show Off Their Lovely Bones With Possibly Pattinson

The stars of The Lovely Bones hit the red carpet last night for their LA premiere.

The stars of The Lovely Bones hit the red carpet last night for their LA premiere. Susan Sarandon, Rachel Weisz, Saoirse Ronan, and Rose McIver were decked out alongside director Peter Jackson, while the film's executive producer, Steven Spielberg, went casual in his baseball cap. Superman star Brandon Routh turned out with wife Courtney Ford, who you might recognize from her role on this season of Dexter. Mark Wahlberg was able to attend last week's screening in NYC, but he missed this one due to his commitments back on the East Coast. One leading man who might have been in attendance was Robert Pattinson — Vampire Diaries star Katerina Graham twittered about seeing him but if he was there, he went undetected by photographers.

Mark, Saoirse and Susan Are Lovely at Their Bones Premiere

Mark Wahlberg led the way at a screening of The Lovely Bones in NYC last night.

Mark Wahlberg led the way at a screening of The Lovely Bones in NYC last night. He was joined by his costars including Saoirse Ronan, who has grown up so much since Atonement, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Christian Ashdale and Rose McIver. The movie has been a long time coming and has another week to go before it hits theaters December 11. Mark has been hard at work on The Other Guys with Will Ferrell for the past few months, but now it's time for some promotional work as a star of the film as well as half of one of our favorite newlywedded couples of 2009.

First Look: Life on Mars

So far, we haven't seen too much of ABCs remake of Life on Mars.

So far, we haven't seen too much of ABCs remake of Life on Mars. The show, which will begin airing after Grey's Anatomy on Oct. 9, had a pretty tricky road to TV, with nearly every actor being recast except for leading man Jason O'Mara. The cast now includes Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, and Harvey Keitel, who are finally starting to show up in promos and clips.

The show, based on a British series, finds O'Mara's character — a New York City cop named Sam Tyler— mysteriously transported back to the 1970s. Keitel plays an older detective, Gene Hunt, who doesn't always follow protocol, while Imperioli plays another officer and Mol plays a woman trying to prove she deserves a shot at police work.

One clip of Sam and Gene meeting in a bar surfaced recently, and now there's a brief ABC promo showing shots of Imperioli and Mol as well. Still no pilot, but I'm hoping that will appear before too long. I enjoyed the British version of the show, but all the trouble this adaptation has run into has left me feeling wary. At least it's good to see some proof that there will be a show after all! To watch the new promo, just read more

Emmy Breakdown: Supporting Actor in a Drama

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I'll be looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns.

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Primetime Emmy Awards, I'll be looking at the nominees in some major categories and trying to predict who's most likely to win in these Emmy Breakdowns. Up today: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, which really seems like a toss-up.

Michael Emerson ("Lost") — Everyone loves to hate Emerson’s character Ben. A clever, cold-hearted villain of the worst kind, Ben is a master of manipulation, always playing on peoples’ worst fears. He’s outrageously evil, but what makes Emerson’s performance so riveting is that he sometimes manages to make Ben seem almost… sympathetic! Against my better judgment, there have been times when even I have fallen prey to those huge, round, unblinking eyes and believed every cunning word. Emerson makes me loathe Ben as a magnificently bad guy, but I’m also fascinated by him and think he makes a worthy adversary for those we consider the good guys, like Locke. I would not be surprised if Emerson had the voters under his spell as well. Chance of winning: High

Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos") — How much do the Emmys really want to celebrate "The Sopranos" this year? If they truly want to shower the show with awards, then I could easily see this going to Imperioli; Christopher was always among my favorite supporting characters on the show, and the episode he submitted ("Walk Like a Man") was chilling. Then again, he's won before, and voters might want to recognize someone new here. Chance of winning: High.

More Lovely Bones Casting: Imperioli and Sarandon

I was trying to take a break from writing about Peter Jackson's screen adaptation of The Lovely Bones, but the cast just keeps expanding.

I was trying to take a break from writing about Peter Jackson's screen adaptation of The Lovely Bones, but the cast just keeps expanding. In fact, I think we can officially start calling it "star-studded" now.

The latest news is that Michael Imperioli of "The Sopranos" has signed on to the movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Imperioli — who got five Emmy nominations, including one this year, during his time on "The Sopranos" — will play Detective Len Fenerman.

Susan Sarandon also has joined the cast since last I wrote, playing the character of the grandmother who moves in with the family after Susie's death. I know casting isn't all about looks, but I really can picture Rachel Weisz as her daughter.

While the pre-review of the screenplay still makes me wary, I have to say I like the way the cast is coming together. What do you think?
