What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

Instead of trying to cling to those last remaining Summer moments, why not prepare yourself for cooler nights in with a few new DVD releases?

Instead of trying to cling to those last remaining Summer moments, why not prepare yourself for cooler nights in with a few new DVD releases? This week brings a trio of comedies, but read on to see which one suits your sense of humor.

MacGruber

Will Forte takes his MacGyver spoof from Saturday Night Live to the big screen in this action comedy about a bumbling former special operative that gets called back for a mission when a nuclear warhead goes missing. As with any MacGruber skit, explosions and a whole lot of hijinks ensue. Along for the ride are Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe, while Val Kilmer plays MacGruber's nemesis. I thought the film was a bit violent and over-the-top, but it definitely has its funny moments. DVD extras include commentary with the filmmakers, a gag reel, and a deleted scene.

Killers
Katherine Heigl plays Jen, yet another gorgeous-but-tragically single character, whose luck changes when she meets a perfect man named Spencer (Ashton Kutcher) during a vacation. They get married and lead a quiet life. . . until Jen learns that Spencer has been keeping his job as a professional assassin a secret. The movie didn't even screen for critics, and the overall consensus is that what you see is what you get with this formulaic romantic comedy. DVD extras include a featurette.

Will Forte & Kristen Wiig on MacGruber and Sweaty Sex Scenes

OK, so I didn't quite love the MacGruber movie as much as I'd hoped, but that hasn't changed my opinions on the film's hilarious actors.

OK, so I didn't quite love the MacGruber movie as much as I'd hoped, but that hasn't changed my opinions on the film's hilarious actors. We recently had the opportunity to chat with the funny leading stars, which means lots of talk about Ryan Phillippe's nakedness and the sex scene between Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. Here are more highlights from the junket:

  • Kristen on her favorite SNL movies: "Blues Brothers . . . That's an SNL movie right? I also really liked Superstar! There's funny stuff in all of them."
  • Will on how he'd defuse a bomb in real life: "I would take off running. I would try to talk to it nicely, 'Please, come on! Think about what you're doing!' And bombs don't usually respond to polite conversation. I am not a hero! I would be out of there."
  • Kristen on bad SNL ideas people pitch her: "My dad actually pitched a really bad one . . . It had something to do with wanting to order a hot dog in a fancy restaurant. I think that might have been the worst one! People don't usually come up with total new ideas, it's more like an idea for a character."
  • Kristen on her sex scene with Will: "Have you ever had anyone sweat on you? Like really drip sweat on you? It's not that fun. But it's Will, and as creepy as it sounds, he's kind of like my brother. So it made it not as bad, but it was a pretty sweaty day. It was pretty bad. We were on satin sheets that really don't absorb anything, they kind of just turn to paper. And we were laughing and we didn’t know what we were doing!"
  • Will on his sex scene with Kristen: "I felt bad for Kristen on that day that we did it because it was very hot in Albuquerque and this was a bedroom on the second floor of this house, and already I was sweating just walking to the bed and she was so covered in sweat by the end of this sex scene . . . I felt bad for her. Because it was her birthday, and nobody deserves that on any day."

MacGruber: A Bomb That Needs Defusing

I am an unapologetic Saturday Night Live lover, in good times and bad, and that feeling extends to Will Forte and his MacGruber character.

I am an unapologetic Saturday Night Live lover, in good times and bad, and that feeling extends to Will Forte and his MacGruber character. The MacGyver parody was so well-received that it's become a movie, MacGruber, out today, also starring Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig.

I wish I could say that studio brass made the right decision turning MacGruber into a full-length movie, but I can't. Whether it's the fact that the brief sketch just didn't have enough material for a 90-minute film or that it just wasn't given enough script or plot work, MacGruber feels like an exercise in misplaced energy.

Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, and Will Forte Get Some SNL Backup at MacGruber

The cast of MacGruber traded in their khaki wardrobe for formal wear at last night's premiere in NYC.

The cast of MacGruber traded in their khaki wardrobe for formal wear at last night's premiere in NYC. Ryan Phillippe looked right at home with all the Saturday Night Live cast members, including Andy Samberg and Bill Hader, who came out to support Will Forte and Kristen Wiig's sketch-to-movie project. It was the second red carpet of the week for the crew, who are also celebrating the end of another successful SNL season. While on the East Coast, Ryan got to fulfill another fun obligation — on Tuesday he traveled south to Philadelphia to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a game for his beloved Phillies! He revealed he was pretty nervous before the throw, but perhaps not quite as much as when getting ready for his embarrassing, partially nude scene in the film.

Ryan Phillippe Jokes Revealing MacGruber Scene Will "Haunt Me For the Rest of My Career"

Ryan and Ava Phillippe were on the sidelines Saturday to watch Deacon's flag football game in LA, as Reese Witherspoon enjoyed a kiss-filled meal with Jim Toth.

Ryan and Ava Phillippe were on the sidelines Saturday to watch Deacon's flag football game in LA, as Reese Witherspoon enjoyed a kiss-filled meal with Jim Toth. The warm afternoon meant that Ryan stripped down to show off those arm muscles. Ryan wrapped up his weekend with Deacon and Ava in order to head to NYC, where he was busy today with the press junket for MacGruber. We got a chance to speak with him about his foray into comedy, and Ryan also opened up about his hidden talents and whether he thinks the movie is appropriate for his kids. He also shows some skin in the movie, and he gave a little background on how that came to be. Ryan said:

  • On being game to do his revealing scene: "It was in the script since the beginning . . . it was one of those things in the beginning where admittedly I was like, I wonder how tied to this moment [the producers] are. But after being on set with Will [Forte] and Kristen [Wiig] for a few weeks and seeing the lengths to which they would go to make the scene work and get the laughs — and Will was naked almost every day — I figured, what the hell . . . It'll haunt me for the rest of my career."
  • On how he tried not to laugh while shooting with Will and Kristen: "I would inflict pain upon myself. I would dig my fingernail into my thumb, or I'd bite the inside of my cheek. That was really the only way because the guy's a maniac in the best possible way. "
  • On his own hidden talents: "I can rap a little bit, and I'm a martial artist — I have a black belt in two different disciplines. And, I'm a dad! I'm a talented dad."
  • On letting Ava and Deacon see MacGruber: "No. No way! No way, not for a decade I think. They're 10 and 6 so it's going to be a while."
