What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

In addition to the following releases, Jack and Jill is also now available on DVD.

In addition to the following releases, Jack and Jill is also now available on DVD.

Footloose

In this remake of the 1984 Kevin Bacon classic, young city boy Ren (Kenny Wormald) moves to a small town in the South where unchaperoned dancing is forbidden. It's not long before he's romancing the preacher's daughter (Julianne Hough) and causing trouble in the community. While it shouldn't shock you that Footloose isn't necessarily a cinematic masterpiece, and the story seems a little dated, it's still a fun and entertaining watch. Fans of the original in particular will enjoy all of the throwbacks and nods to the first film. The DVD and Blu-ray extras include deleted scenes, commentary, three making-of featurettes, and a few extra music videos.

Like Crazy Will Remind You of Your Long-Distance Relationship

With its intensely relatable story and intimate performances, Like Crazy was one of the first movies picked up from last year's Sundance Film Festival.

With its intensely relatable story and intimate performances, Like Crazy was one of the first movies picked up from last year's Sundance Film Festival. In it, Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones rely almost entirely on improv acting to bring to life the story of young love facing the challenges of a long-distance relationship. Like Crazy is now in limited release, and if you can see it, you will likely recognize the emotional cycle of passion, frustration, jealousy, and doubt that plays out on screen, especially if you've been in a long-distance relationship.

Anyone who has fallen in love can identify the nascent stages of it. Anna (Felicity Jones) and Jacob (Anton Yelchin) take each familiar step as they get to know each other. Anna, an English exchange student in Los Angeles, tells Jacob that she's really not a "nutcase" when she leaves a note asking him out. Their first date is wonderfully awkward and the tension rises as they anticipate their first kiss; will it or won't it happen? It does, and they fall fast in love. They discover they both love Paul Simon's Graceland album, and Jacob's slightly uncomfortable, yet charming when he meets her parents. After graduation, Anna must return to the UK to apply for her work visa, and we all know her real motive for picking little fights with Jacob on her last day: she's going to miss him.

Anna just can't imagine leaving LA and Jacob, even just for a Summer, and makes the impulsive decision of a 21-year-old to outstay her student visa, figuring everything will work out. It doesn't, and her shortsighted decision gains her a long-term ban on entering the US. Thus, Anna and Jacob find themselves in a long-distance relationship right after graduating university, a time when nothing is certain, including when they will next see each other.

Style Setter: Felicity Jones's Ladylike Polish

It's official: we're pretty stoked on Felicity Jones.
Felicity Jones Style Profile

It's official: we're pretty stoked on Felicity Jones. The 27-year-old British actress, who stars in the seriously tear-jerking film Like Crazy (no really — I bawled like a baby) is on track to be the next big thing — and not just on the silver screen. Not only did Felicity wear all her own clothes in the movie, but she's steadily making a name for herself with her laid-back yet ladylike red carpet choices. She opts for polished, knee or tea-length frocks with clean lines and unfussy prints, and sticks to signature staples like black tights, ankle-strap heels, and laid-back tees. With her classic, elegant Brit sensibility, it's no wonder that Felicity counts red carpet stars like Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan as friends — and we're kind of hoping to get on that list too. Click through to see 15 examples of why Felicity Jones is the next big thing in red carpet style.

Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Drake Doremus on Like Crazy and Shooting Without a Script

Like Crazy premiered earlier this year at Sundance, and now the festival favorite is about to hit the big screen in wide release.

Like Crazy premiered earlier this year at Sundance, and now the festival favorite is about to hit the big screen in wide release. We sat down with stars Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, who play a pair of young lovers struggling to keep their long distance relationship alive. They talked about what it was like working without a script (the movie is almost entirely improvised), and how they developed their onscreen chemistry. Director Drake Doremus also discussed how he chose his leads and what he makes of the film's comparisons to Blue Valentine.

Like Crazy Trailer: Young Love Is Tough Stuff For Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, and Jennifer Lawrence

The first trailer for Like Crazy accurately captures the spirit of the movie: quiet, touching, bittersweet.

The first trailer for Like Crazy accurately captures the spirit of the movie: quiet, touching, bittersweet. The film stars newcomer Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin as a pair of young lovers whose relationship is put to the test when she must return to her home in England while he stays in the States. What ensues is the trajectory of a typical long-distance relationship for twentysomethings: tearful phone calls, breakup threats, and the constant question of whether love is worth fighting for.

I fell in love with the film back at Sundance, particularly for the great performances from its leads. Jennifer Lawrence also has a small role, but really, this film is all Yelchin and Jones. It's already been compared to Blue Valentine, but lighter and a bit less raw. Watch the trailer to see if it's up your alley when you read more

Sundance Snapshot: Like Crazy

I can't say I'm surprised that Like Crazy, a little love story that's both enchanting and heartbreaking (a la last year's Blue Valentine) was one of the first films to get picked up for wide release from Sundance.

I can't say I'm surprised that Like Crazy, a little love story that's both enchanting and heartbreaking (a la last year's Blue Valentine) was one of the first films to get picked up for wide release from Sundance. It's got all the makings of a festival favorite: an engaging story packed with emotion, a premise that audiences can relate to, and breakthrough performances from a pair of young actors.

  • Who's behind it? The film stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Terminator Salvation) and British up-and-comer Felicity Jones, and was directed by Sundance vet Drake Doremus.
  • What's it about? Yelchin and Jones play Jacob and Anna, a couple who meets in their senior year of college and instantly develop a connection when they begin dating. Complications arise when Anna, a Brit, violates the terms of her visa and consequently has to return to England. As they step into the real world and begin their separate lives as adults, Jacob and Anna's long-distance relationship is tested as they grow apart but can't seem to shake their connection.

What's Buzzing at Sundance: Get the Scoop on the Festival's Hottest Films

Greetings from Park City!

Greetings from Park City! Molly and I have been having a blast taking in tons of films (more details on those soon!), interviewing the stars, and then watching them let loose down on Main Street (here's some proof of James Franco's shenanigans). Whether you're a fellow attendee here in Utah or are just following along from the warm comforts of home, here's the latest buzz on what's been happening during the festival's first weekend.

  • I had a feeling that Margin Call, a thriller about the economic collapse, was going to be a hot commodity from the moment we got closed out of the overcrowded screening on Saturday morning. The good news is that we'll still be able to catch it in theaters, now that it's been snatched up by Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions. The film's star-studded cast includes Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, and Paul Bettany.
  • Speaking of hot tickets, Paul Rudd's My Idiot Brother premiered on Saturday night. We saw the film this morning, so stay tuned for my first thoughts (spoiler alert: it's just as funny and sweet as you're probably expecting). Though there hasn't been an official deal inked yet, it's safe to say that this one will be snatched up very soon.
  • Another film that's garnering buzz for its positive reviews and studio interest is Like Crazy. The romantic drama, which stars Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence, and Felicity Jones is already drawing comparisons to last year's Blue Valentine and Paramount has reportedly closed a deal to bring it to wide release.
