Les Misérables

Director Tom Hooper adapted the legendary musical into this Oscar-nominated big-screen version, starring Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who flees lifelong nemesis Javert (Russell Crowe) and finds redemption in 17th-century France. The movie is almost entirely sung, which doesn't always work, but it's a triumph when it does. Case in point: Anne Hathaway's performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" as Fantine, the role that won her an Oscar. A commentary track and a few behind-the-scenes featurettes are included on the DVD.

Zero Dark Thirty

Jessica Chastain stars in this true-life thriller as Maya, the woman who leads a decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden. Kathryn Bigelow directed the harrowing drama, which also stars Chris Pratt and Joel Edgerton as members of the SEAL Team 6 who found bin Laden. Chastain delivers a great performance (which earned her an Oscar nomination), but the controversial torture scenes can be tough to watch. DVD extras include a few making-of featurettes.

Anne Hathaway's Fit Philosophy

When it comes to collecting Oscar gold, Les Misérables star Anne Hathaway will be one to watch this Sunday.

When it comes to collecting Oscar gold, Les Misérables star Anne Hathaway will be one to watch this Sunday. And while we'll be admiring her fashion choices on the red carpet, we'll also be eyeing her fit physique. Since training for her role as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, Anne's become a fan of fitness and clean eating (her monthlong starvation diet for her Oscar-nominated role notwithstanding, of course). How does she do it? Here's how Anne stays healthy, happy, and fit.

A new love: Before training for The Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway didn't exactly love to work out. In fact, she said she hated exercising but eventually changed her mind. "There's a workout hump where you're so weak that you hate everything, and everything's painful, and you look like an idiot," she said about her training regimen. Now Anne's "that person" who loves to exercise and likes to do Bikram yoga to stay fit.

Fitness dedication: To get in shape for her Catwoman role, Anne did stunt training five days a week and danced for an hour-and-a-half daily. She also lifted weights and practiced martial arts and yoga. Her intense regimen helped her realize that even in Hollywood, it's not always about your dress size. "I've always thought that skinny was the goal, but with this job, I also have to be strong," she told Harper's Bazaar in 2011.

Her diet: When she's not depriving herself to drop 25 pounds in just over a month — as she did to portray dying prostitute Fantine in Les Misérables — Anne's diet is a lot less dangerous (about her two-week starvation, Anne said, "I don't recommend [it]. . . . You can be too thin.") Except for a stint eating meat in her early 20s, Anne Hathaway usually sticks to a plant-based diet. The "commitment-shy" vegetarian sometimes struggles with sticking to her convictions, but since reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, she has become even more dedicated to her vegetarianism. When Anne wants to indulge, she turns to vegan desserts — she's a huge fan of vegan New York City bakery Babycakes.

Being comfortable: Getting older has helped Anne feel more comfortable in her own skin. "I'm turning 30, and — I hope this isn't obnoxious to say — I feel prettier and much more myself. I guess I just feel much more satisfied with less now," she said recently in Vogue.

Anne Hathaway shared laughs and drinks with her Les Misérables costars at a special pre-Oscars bash in LA last night. She donned a Theyskens' Theory minidress as she celebrated with a Dior-wearing Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, and Isla Fisher, who attended the shindig with her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen. The Les Misérables fete supported the Los Angeles Fund For Public Education, and drew other celebrities like Adrien Brody and Judy Greer. The celebration wasn't to be confused with the separate Vanity Fair party for Silver Linings Playbook, which also benefited education in LA and was held on the same night.

The pre-Oscars parties are just getting started, and the casts of both films will have plenty of chances to celebrate before Oscar night on Sunday, Feb. 24. Don't forget to fill out our Oscar ballot for a chance to win $1,000 and an iPad.

Les Misérables-Inspired Decor

Les Misérables is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination in the production design category.

Les Misérables is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination in the production design category. The film, based on the musical and novel by Victor Hugo, takes place in 1800's Paris and is notable for the development of its characters and scenes depicting revolution-era France. With production designer Eve Stewart behind the wheel (she also worked on The King's Speech) there's no shortage of breathtaking backdrops and colors that make the film just as much about design as about love and war. Here, see how you can get the look yourself, minus the suffering.

How to Throw a Les Misérables-Themed Oscar Party

The Oscars air this weekend, and if you're planning on throwing a viewing party to celebrate with your friends, let me suggest a theme that reflects one of this year's nominees.

The Oscars air this weekend, and if you're planning on throwing a viewing party to celebrate with your friends, let me suggest a theme that reflects one of this year's nominees. I told you how to put together a Silver Linings-Playbook-themed party, but if you'd rather indulge your inner Francophile, look to fellow best picture nominee, Les Misérables, for inspiration. Don't worry — you can still serve food with this theme.

  • How to decorate: Pile up old furniture in corners to resemble barricades, and scatter little French flags around. Oh, and try to only sing your words.
  • How to dress: You have a lot of options with the 19th-century French framework, but for women, corsets and full skirts are key. Channel Eponine with a more raggedy look, like a neutral-hued dress and leather belt, or channel the wealthier Cosette as a teen and pick a sweet but elaborate lacy dress.
  • What to serve: Freshly baked loaves of bread to symbolize Jean Valjean's early life as a prisoner, but you can add lots of rich, delicious spreads like bread, cheese, and jam to symbolize his prosperity later on.

Hugh Jackman Says He Was "Stalkerish" About Nabbing His Les Mis Role

Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman came to today's Oscars Luncheon, and he couldn't have been more effusive about the film he's nominated for, Les Misérables.

Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman came to today's Oscars Luncheon, and he couldn't have been more effusive about the film he's nominated for, Les Misérables. He complimented director Tom Hooper and the way he shot the film, and he also divulged how nervous it made him to play Jean Valjean.

On feeling the pressure of playing such a memorable character: "I was so stalkerish about getting the role. I literally hunted Tom [Hooper] down. Way before he even signed on for it, I auditioned. When I got the call about getting the part, that's when it hit me. It's one of those things of 'be careful what you wish for' because all that history. . . . Of course I downloaded every film, all the French films, the Perkins film, every film that had ever been made, and then I proceeded to watch none of them. Either I was part terrified, or part I just realized I had to make it my own. Even though it is the Hamlet of roles, for an actor, I had to just make it my own. Then I went into 'ignorance is bliss.' With Tom, who is an incredible director."

On the process of filming a movie musical: "Every day was like an opening in the theater, and a closing all at once."

On admiring his director Tom Hooper: "I think what Tom did was take risks. He found a way to find what people loved from the stage show, but [was] brave enough to turn it into film, and give people a reason to love the film. His choice to sing it live, his choice to sing it through, were really bold at the time. And also, like with Anne Hathaway, to not cut on a close-up for three minutes. Ultimately, he made it very theatrical. He made it very theatrical, but gave people a seat they could never get in the theater. He brought the best of theater and the best of film, and then went back to the book to fill in any gaps."
