Pitch Perfect

Anna Kendrick stars as a college freshman who reluctanty joins a female a capella group. Though she's initially skeptical about joining leaders Chloe (Brittany Snow) and Aubrey (Anna Camp) and their medley of quirky peers in singing dated songs, she eventually comes around. Soon she realizes her knack for song mixing may benefit the team and help them defeat the competing boys' a capella group. Though some may find the comedy to be formulaic, the songs are enjoyable, as are supporting actors Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin. The DVD comes with deleted scenes and a couple featurettes.

Trouble With the Curve

Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake headline the impressive cast of this baseball dramedy. Gus (Eastwood) is a grumpy old baseball recruiter embarking on his last scouting trip as the clock ticks on his waning eyesight. He's begrudgingly joined by his daughter, Mickey (Adams), with whom he shares a rocky relationship. While on the road, a good-natured fellow recruiter Johnny (Justin Timberlake) takes an interest in the uptight Mickey. Trouble With the Curve tries to go in so many directions but never fully commits, and though it has its moments, the end result is boring and cheesy. The DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette with Adams and Timberlake.

Matthew McConaughey posed alongside Gina Gershon at a special Lincoln Center event for Killer Joe in NYC last night. The duo met up with the film's director, William Friedkin, and writer Tracy Letts for The Film Society panel, where they participated in a Q&A following the viewing. It was the second screening in a row for Matthew, who also stepped out with his pregnant wife, Camila Alves, on Monday.

Matthew has his whole family on the East Coast while he does press for the film, including a stop by The Daily Show yesterday. Matthew chatted about his drastic weight loss for an upcoming role, saying that he's already shed 16 pounds and has about 15 more to go before reaching his goal. He even shared that his suit pants were sewn up so that they would fit! Matthew will be back on the small screen in an interview with Craig Ferguson tonight before the movie hits theaters on Friday.

Killer Joe Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Is a Hit Man For Hire

I'm so used to seeing Matthew McConaughey in romantic comedy mode, so it's a bit disconcerting to see him as a cold-blooded killer as the titular character in the trailer for Killer Joe.

I'm so used to seeing Matthew McConaughey in romantic comedy mode, so it's a bit disconcerting to see him as a cold-blooded killer as the titular character in the trailer for Killer Joe. Emile Hirsch plays Chris, a man so desperate for money that he decides to have his mother (Gina Gershon) killed so he can collect the insurance money. He calls on hit man Joe, but since he doesn't have the cash for the deposit, he uses his sister (Juno Temple) as collateral. As you can tell from Hirsch's bloody face, the arrangement doesn't play out super smoothly, and it's not just Chris's mom who's in danger.

Though the movie is billed as a black comedy, there aren't too many jokes in the preview, but there is as much violence as you'd expect for a movie about a contract killer. I'm assuming the film itself will be pretty graphic, since it recently earned an NC-17 rating (and it's from William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist). Killer Joe comes out June 27, and you can see the trailer when you read more.

Matthew McConaughey to Kill For Emile Hirsch

Matthew McConaughey is about to tackle a funny movie, but this time there's no romantic prefix.

Matthew McConaughey is about to tackle a funny movie, but this time there's no romantic prefix. Along with Emile Hirsch, he's signed on to star in Killer Joe, a black comedy. The movie is about siblings (one of which is played by Hirsch) who want to have their mother killed for the insurance money, so they hire a hitman (McConaughey) to work for them.

Is McConaughey ready to leave his Mr. Shirtless days behind him? Between this news and his upcoming film The Lincoln Lawyer, I'm happy to see him expanding his horizons again. As for Hirsch, I have no problems picturing him as a crazy little deviant.
