Violet & Daisy Trailer: Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel Are Armed and Dangerous

If Alexis Bledel never struck you as the murderous type, prepare to be shocked by the trailer for Violet & Daisy.

If Alexis Bledel never struck you as the murderous type, prepare to be shocked by the trailer for Violet & Daisy. The movie stars Bledel and Saoirse Ronan as young assassins who are thrown off task during a supposedly routine job. Their target? James Gandolfini. From there, the trailer takes a turn for the surreal and colorful, making me wonder exactly what kind of movie this is.

Violet & Daisy's lack of genre isn't necessarily a bad thing; in fact, this trailer is pretty refreshing. I'm curious to see how Bledel and Ronan do with such adult roles, and I'm looking forward to putting together the puzzle that is Violet & Daisy — not to mention seeing the brilliant visual aspects on the big screen. The movie opens in June, but let me know what you think of the trailer after the jump.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone: Mediocre but Mildly Funny

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone follows the life of a man who aims to leave people in awe, and while the movie itself doesn't reach those kinds of heights, it is a comedy with a few laughs and a cast that wins you over.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone follows the life of a man who aims to leave people in awe, and while the movie itself doesn't reach those kinds of heights, it is a comedy with a few laughs and a cast that wins you over. Steve Carell headlines as title character Burt Wonderstone, a Vegas Strip mainstay whose flashy shtick has grown tired. Steve Buscemi plays his stage partner Anton, and when their act is challenged by flagging ticket sales and newer, more modern competitors, the two childhood best friends have a falling out, leaving Burt to rediscover his touch. Burt's road to a comeback is entertaining and full of goofiness that's quite dumb but still amusing.

The silliness of the movie is balanced out by how irreverent its sense of humor is. This is best demonstrated by Jim Carrey's character Steve Gray, a Criss Angel-like street magician more interested in shocking the masses than dazzling them. The gags ring true, and the observations about the business of magic are sharp and give The Incredible Burt Wonderstone an edge — not just an excuse to put the actors in ridiculous costumes. The lampooning of the industry and the jokes both provide a good time, even if the movie isn't destined to be a comedy classic. Find out what else I thought after the jump.

Daniel Craig Cheers On Rachel at the NY Film Critics Circle Awards

Jessica Chastain, Matthew McConaughey, Rachel Weisz, and many more stars celebrated their fellow actors and filmmakers at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in New York City last night.

Jessica Chastain, Matthew McConaughey, Rachel Weisz, and many more stars celebrated their fellow actors and filmmakers at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in New York City last night. Matthew, who wore a suit by Dolce&Gabbana, won best supporting actor for his performances in Magic Mike and Bernie while Rachel beat out Jessica — who did triple-duty that night by appearing on the Late Show and attending a screening for Mama in addition to this event — for best actress for her role in The Deep Blue Sea. Rachel's husband Daniel Craig cheered Rachel on from the audience when she won her award.

Jessica's film Zero Dark Thirty was the big winner of the night, earning best director for Kathryn Bigelow and best cinematography for Greg Fraser. Highly-buzzed-about films Les Misérables and Argo missed out altogether. However, those films and their stars will have plenty of chances to scoop up more honors once award season starts up in earnest this week with the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday and the Critic's Choice Awards on Thursday. And don't forget about the Golden Globes, which are this Sunday, and your chance to predict the winners with our special Golden Globes ballot. If you predict the highest number of Golden Globes winners, you could win $1,500 and an iPad Mini!

Brad Pitt Debuts Killing Them Softly to a Star-Studded NYC Crowd

Brad Pitt was in NYC last night for a screening of Killing Them Softly.

Brad Pitt was in NYC last night for a screening of Killing Them Softly. Along with his costars James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta, Brad posed for photos on the red carpet at a special Cinema Society event. A handful of famous ladies came out to see Brad's latest, including Rose Byrne, Maggie Grace, model Anne V, Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter, and The Good Wife's Archie Panjabi. Killing Them Softly arrives in theaters this Friday, Nov. 30, and Brad's done a handful of interviews in the run-up to its release. He spoke to Extra about both his film and his engagement to Angelina Jolie. He said, "I will admit we have had some pressure from our kids. We didn't realize how much it means to them . . . we didn't realize how much it means to us." As for the place and time, Brad commented, "We are both migratory workers and it will be a matter of convenience location wise."

Killing Them Softly Trailer: Brad Pitt's Got a Goatee and a Gun

Brad Pitt is Jackie Cogan, a ruthless (yet amiable) assassin with a penchant for killing his victims from a distance, in the dramatic thriller Killing Them Softly.

Brad Pitt is Jackie Cogan, a ruthless (yet amiable) assassin with a penchant for killing his victims from a distance, in the dramatic thriller Killing Them Softly. Cogan is tasked with taking down two young thieves (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) who knocked over a poker game. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if said poker game wasn't being put on by gangsters, and if the amateurs didn't keep bragging about their $100,000 loot. Richard Jenkins also stars, along with mob men extraordinaires James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta.

Killing Them Softly premiered at Cannes this year and garnered mostly positive reviews. Seeing Pitt and Gandolfini together again sparks memories of the two in 2001's fellow hit-man movie The Mexican, though this movie definitely looks darker and grittier. Killing Them Softly is set for release on Oct. 19, but you can watch the trailer when you read more.

Entourage's Mark and True Blood's Joe Welcome Boardwalk Empire to the HBO Family

Small screen stars came out in force last night for the NYC premiere of HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

Small screen stars came out in force last night for the NYC premiere of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The show ranked among our five must-watch Fall series, and we're loving the eye candy to be shown on Sunday's debut episode. True Blood's Joe Manganiello showed some love for HBO during a break from his Fashion Week rounds with the girlfriend he's so fond of, and we grabbed a minute at a recent Alice + Olivia party to get the scoop on his next season. The Entourage crew was well represented with Adrian Grenier and Mark Wahlberg, who's front and center in the new trailer for The Fighter. Mark also stole a minute to catch up with Diddy. Steve Buscemi was the star of the evening, but he still managed to greet his old Sopranos costars James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and Lorraine Bracco. Mick Jagger even made a cameo with his lady friend L'Wren Scott, while over in London, his bandmate Keith Richards grabbed a meal with Johnny Depp.
