Cruise plays a former military officer called out of retirement when an accused sniper asks for him by name. The opening shooting scene is immensely disturbing, but the film works as a mystery, and Cruise fans will be especially pleased to see the actor turn in another action-packed performance.

Safe Haven

Safe Haven is the latest adaptation from renowned romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. Abuse victim Katie (Julianne Hough) is looking for a clean start. She finds herself in a small seaside town being courted by a charming single dad (Josh Duhamel), but she's plagued by an ex who is intent on tracking her down. Unrealistic and filled with cheesy clichés, the film itself is a lot less tempting than Duhamel. The DVD comes loaded with extended scenes and a (much-needed) alternate ending.

Tom Cruise had a busy one today when he did a press conference and headlined a premiere in Tokyo for Jack Reacher. He was joined by costar Rosamund Pike and director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie for both events. At the press conference, Tom wore a navy blue sweater and later changed into a dark suit and aviator sunglasses when he attended the premiere. At the film's debut event, Tom signed autographs and took photos with his Japanese fans. Jack's film was released in the states and Europe back in December and has already earned over $121 million worldwide. Tom has been busy these past few weeks between his globe-trotting Jack Reacher press duties. Tom spent the holidays with his children, including daughter Suri, at his vacation home in Colorado. However, sources say that Tom is still single and not getting serious with anyone at the moment.

Tom Cruise's action flick Jack Reacher rounded out the top five with $14 million.

Despite a huge drop in ticket sales, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey managed to stay at the top of the box office for the second weekend in a row, taking in $36.7 million. Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher opened in second place with $15.6 million, and This is 40 debuted in third with $12 million. Rise of the Guardians and Lincoln rounded out the top five, with $5.9 million and $5.6 million, respectively.

Tom Cruise is back in action breaking ribs and twisting arms, this time as the title character in Jack Reacher, based on Lee Child's popular series. After years serving at various ranks in the military police, Jack comes out of retirement to help solve a heinous mass murder. When the suspect turns out to be one of Jack's former troopers with a violent past, he agrees to get to the bottom of the case and put the guy behind bars for good. It doesn't hurt that the DA's beautiful daughter (Rosamund Pike) is the attorney asking for his help. Jack Reacher may sound like a cut-and-dry popcorn flick, but there's a lot more to the film that I didn't expect. However, there are also a few things to consider before buying a ticket.

  1. The opening scene is very disturbing. The movie opens with the crime; the shooter is making bullets in his apartment, and then we see him set up in a parking garage across from a busy walkway, where he proceeds to methodically pick off victims. It's not a traditional action sequence; it's slow and focused and there's no music, just the sounds of the shooter breathing. It's a really intense scene, and it may be difficult to watch, especially given current events.
  2. It's a mystery movie. I expected Jack Reacher to be straight-up action, but it's much more of a murder mystery. We know who the shooter is from the beginning, but Jack (and the audience) has to put together the motive and who is really pulling the strings. There are are some gun fights and some knife fights, but the movie's strength lies in its challenging narrative puzzle.

On Monday night, Tom was in London for the world premiere of the film, which hits theaters stateside on Dec. 21. It's one of several big films vying for theatergoers' attention this holiday season, alongside Les Misérable, The Hobbit, and many more.

Tom has spent recent months hard at work in the wake of his split from Katie Holmes. He most recently shot All You Need Is Kill opposite Emily Blunt, and an early preview of Oblivion, his highly anticipated apocalyptic action movie, was also recently released. Despite his heavy workload, Tom said he'll spend the holidays with Suri and his older children when he was asked about his plans for ringing in 2013.
