J. Edgar

Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the trying role of the FBI's first director J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's biopic. The film follows Hoover's life and career, including his oft-questioned relationship with his right hand man, Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). While DiCaprio's performance is inspired and the cast is chock full of star power, the story itself proves to be pretty dull. If you're interested in the DVD, you can look forward to the extra "J. Edgar: The Most Powerful Man in the World," where DiCaprio and Eastwood sit down to discuss the complicated life of Hoover.

Tower Heist
In this Bret Ratner flick, luxury apartment manager Josh (Ben Stiller) puts together a rag-tag team — including Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, and Eddie Murphy as a petty criminal named Slide — to take revenge on a swindling mogul Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) who has robbed the apartment's staff of their savings. While the heist seems pretty convoluted, there are some funny moments that make it an entertaining watch. The DVD extras include deleted scenes, two alternate endings, bloopers, a making-of featurette, and audio commentary with Ratner and two of the film's writers.

Male actors dominate this week's new releases, including Leonardo DiCaprio, who takes on a role portraying a historical figure in J. Edgar and the heavily muscled Kellan Lutz and Henry Cavill who star in Immortals. Adam Sandler plays a woman in Jack and Jill, but there's no mistaking he's a man. Check out pictures from the film to see what we mean, as well as shots from J. Edgar and Immortals.

J. Edgar: A Great Cast in a Dull Story

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to onscreen transformation, and takes on the FBI's first director, J.

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to onscreen transformation, and takes on the FBI's first director, J. Edgar Hoover, in Clint Eastwood's biopic J. Edgar. With the help of makeup, a Southern accent, and some idiosyncrasies, DiCaprio seamlessly shows us Hoover as both the hero that took criminal investigation to a new level, and the villain who resorted to questionable methods to get there. Though DiCaprio's performance is engaging, the film isn't on par with Eastwood's finest films.

The story is told in Hoover's words, as he relates his career to various young men who are helping him transcribe his life story. The juxtaposition of Hoover's life as a young man (beginning at the start of his career in 1920) and his final years echoes the film's theme of dichotomy. As the FBI's director and a public figure, Hoover is arrogant, stubborn, and adamant about what he wants. Behind closed doors, Hoover is still a scared young man who is paranoid about losing his power and struggling with his sexual identity.

J. Edgar Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio Rocks the Historical Boat

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to playing larger-than-life historical figures, but it feels like he's never thrown himself more into a real-life character in the trailer for J.

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to playing larger-than-life historical figures, but it feels like he's never thrown himself more into a real-life character in the trailer for J. Edgar. It could be director Clint Eastwood's influence, the magnitude of the man he's playing, or possibly it's the slightly over-the-top accent DiCaprio uses. J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the FBI, a proponent of using fingerprints to identify people, and a controversial figure whose paranoid tactics almost got him dismissed from his job by the three presidents he served under, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson.

DiCaprio plays Hoover over the course of a couple decades, and after he shows up with a couple of minor changes, like brown contacts, he gets a full physical transformation to portray him as an older man, aging makeup and all. Aside the from the vaguely distracting accent, it looks like DiCaprio turns in a solid performance in the biopic. And with Eastwood attached, it's sure to attract some Oscar buzz. Decide for yourself when you watch the trailer for the film, which also stars Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts, when you keep reading

First Look: Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover

Clint Eastwood's biopic of FBI's first director J.

Clint Eastwood's biopic of FBI's first director J. Edgar Hoover hits theaters this November, and here's your first look at Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. Leo is practically unrecognizable under all that makeup, though covering up his baby blues with colored contacts might be the most jarring aspect of his new look. The pairing of director Eastwood with DiCaprio in a historical drama is pretty much a shoo-in for Oscar season, but what do you think about this first picture from the film?

Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer Take J. Edgar to Virginia

Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer were together in Alexandria, VA, yesterday to shoot outdoor scenes for the Clint Eastwood-directed J. Edgar. The guys have been working on the movie for the last few months, though production had previously been based around LA. They've been able to go both casual and formal while working on the project, and their latest afternoon on set saw them decked out in business gear. Armie's next role will likely include period costumes, though, as he's been cast as the prince in an upcoming The Brothers Grimm: Snow White alongside wicked queen Julia Roberts.
