Robert Downey Jr's Best and Most Memorable Movie Roles 2010-11-04 16:30:55

With Due Date hitting theaters Friday, Robert Downey Jr. continues to shine, but he hasn't always been in audiences' good graces. After a successful career in the '80s and early '90s, the actor dealt with addiction problems that unfortunately overshadowed his talent. E! True Hollywood Story stuff aside, he's back on top once again and bigger than ever (let's not forget his Golden Globe win earlier this year!). Take a look back at the memorable roles that got him here.

Iron Man 2

Robert Downey Jr. returns in this sequel to the 2008 smash hit superhero movie. Now, Tony Stark must face the consequences of revealing his alter ego while exploring his feelings for his former assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), taking on a new villain (Mickey Rourke), and finding a remedy for the poison that's seeping into his bloodstream. Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell represent the franchise newbies and Don Cheadle takes over as Stark's right-hand man Rhodey (formerly played by Terrence Howard). Though the film doesn't outshine the original, I still thought it was a fun sequel with a good sense of humor. DVD extras include deleted scenes, featurettes, and audio commentary.

Get Him to the Greek

Russell Brand reprises his Forgetting Sarah Marshall role as over-the-top rock star Aldous Snow. In this new adventure, record company intern Aaron (Jonah Hill) must get a washed-up Snow from London to LA for a career-reviving concert at the Greek theater. Tons of drug and sex-fueled high jinks ensue along the way as Aldous and Aaron strike up an unlikely but meaningful friendship. The film is worth seeing thanks to Brand and Hill's comedic chemistry and Diddy's scene-stealing role as Aaron's hotshot boss. DVD extras include deleted scenes, an alternate intro and ending, a gag reel, and more.

Box Office: Sex and the City Is No Match for Shrek

UPDATE: According to estimates through the holiday, Prince of Persia actually bested Sex and the City 2, taking in $37.8 and $37.1 million, respectively.

Forget Sex and the City 2 versus Prince of Persia. Despite the hype surrounding both of those films, this Memorial Day weekend belonged to Shrek Forever After. All together now: Huh?!

The family film continued its hold on the top spot at the box office for a second week with $43.3 million. That leaves Sex and the City 2 in second place with $32.2 million (a number that fell short of insiders' estimates); Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came in third with $30.1 million. Something to keep in mind, however: SATC opened on Wednesday at midnight, which means if they had counted Thursday's sales as part of the weekend total, the ladies may just have been able to eke out a first place finish.

Iron Man 2 took fourth with $16 million and Robin Hood rounded out the top five with $10.3 million.

Box Office: Shrek Lumbers to the Top of the Chart

It was a fairy-tale weekend for Shrek Forever After, which earned the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend with an impressive $71.2 million. Following in the monster's footsteps was Iron Man 2, which pulled in $26.6 million, then Robin Hood in the third spot with $18.7 million.

Romantic drama Letters to Juliet secured the number four title with $9.1 million, with Queen Latifah's rom-com Just Wright completing the top five with $4.2 million.

Unfortunately, new release MacGruber missed the top five and came in at six — maybe audiences listened to the poor reviews.

How Blake Lively Got Her Abs Green Lantern Ready

Long and leggy Blake Lively has a few things going for her when it comes to looking so lean: youth and good genes — there's also the issue of Spanx.

Long and leggy Blake Lively has a few things going for her when it comes to looking so lean: youth and good genes — there's also the issue of Spanx. But for her upcoming role in Green Lantern, Blake needed to get superhero ready. Trainer Bobby Strom recently shared with Us Weekly what he and Blake have been doing to get her in shape to play opposite the Green Lantern himself, Ryan Reynolds.

Strom is no stranger when it comes to working with the superhero set, having recently wrapped up training Scarlett Johansson for her kick-ass-and-take-names role in Iron Man 2. While the goal of getting both Scarlett and Blake strong was the same, the methods differed slightly. Scarlett did a lot of boxing, and Strom says he and Blake focused their efforts on circuit training four days a week, 90 minutes each time. All the planks, push-ups, and walking lunges paid off too. For the first time ever, Strom says that Blake has been able to say that she has abs.

As for her diet, there was a lot of oatmeal, fresh fruits and veggies, salad, and lean proteins like fish and chicken. Blake limited dessert to a one-bite affair only, and saved her real splurges for cooking and eating Greek food instead.

Box Office: Iron Man 2 Skyrockets to No. 1

Robert Downey Jr. can add yet another film to his long list of successes: Iron Man 2.

Robert Downey Jr. can add yet another film to his long list of successes: Iron Man 2. The film handily earned the top spot at the box office this weekend with an impressive $133.6 million — that makes it the fifth-highest opening gross in Hollywood history! The weekend earnings also bested that of the original Iron Man, which raked in $98.6 million for its opening weekend back in 2008.

Obviously that means that last week's champ A Nightmare on Elm Street fell to second place with only $9.1million in ticket sales (sorry, Freddy). It was followed by How to Train Your Dragon in third with $6.7 million, Date Night in fourth with $5.3 million, and The Back-up Plan in fifth with $4.3 million.
