This Is What Happens When Iggy Pop Invades a Perfume Ad

Perfume commercials are always trying to be provocative and sexy to attract consumers, but the new ads for Paco Rabane Black XS seem to be reaching out in a very different way: specifically, to glam rock fans in the early punk era.

Perfume commercials are always trying to be provocative and sexy to attract consumers, but the new ads for Paco Rabane Black XS seem to be reaching out in a very different way: specifically, to glam rock fans in the early punk era. What else could possibly explain this frenetic new ad, which has everything a young David Bowie could want: Iggy Pop sensuously wrapping himself in an American flag, models licking a Damien Hirst-y jewel-encrusted skull, a couple writhing in money like a pair of proto-punk Scrooge McDucks, etc. It's as if someone turned Velvet Goldmine into a perfume.

As big fans of Mr. Stardust and his spiders from Mars, the campy elements of the ad are pretty appealing to us. But given the otherwise small overlap between perfumistas and '70s-rock aficionados, this spot seems pretty niche indeed. Still, it's always nice to see Iggy, and maybe now, with a perfume campaign under his belt, he can finally fulfill his beauty destiny by starting a hair care line.

Carine Roitfeld and Iggy Pop: Dopplegangers and Future Collaborators?

Carine Roitfeld sat down with the Financial Times in a remarkably candid interview that touched upon her future plans — styling the Barneys Fall windows and catalog, her fallout with current French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt, Anna Wintour's "first lady" status, the thing she hates most in fashion (hint, it's a shoe style), and her doppelganger.

Here's an amusing excerpt from the article:

"[Carine] hopes to "celebrate herself" by recruiting someone to be involved [in the Barneys' project] who looks rather a lot like her: Iggy Pop. “People always say, ‘You look like Iggy Pop,'" she says, apparently unconcerned by the comparison to a rather grizzled-looking, 64-year-old man. “I don’t know if it’s the eyes or the hair, anyway, he has a great style.”

Here is Carine and Iggy Pop. Do you think they're doppelgangers?

Fashion Rocks London and Celebrity Party People

Music and fashion collided again at last night's Swarovski Fashion Rocks concert in London.

Music and fashion collided again at last night's Swarovski Fashion Rocks concert in London. September's NY Fashion Rocks was a different affair, but last night's party was just as star studded. This one played host for quite the group — from movie stars like Naomi, Liev and Uma to supermodels like Naomi (in her crazy unnecessarily see through dress) and bang-y Kate to musicians like Joss Stone and Iggy Pop. Um, I just hope Uma knew how sheer her dress was when she left the house. The musical invitees performed as couture showed on the runway and the rest of the room enjoyed the show. Must have been an incredible party inside. Talk about the most glamorous of rock star lives. Oh to be a fly on that wall, right?

Song of the Day: The Stooges, "My Idea of Fun"

Iggy Pop is old enough to be your dad, but that isn't stopping the veteran punk-rocker from having a MySpace page.

Iggy Pop is old enough to be your dad, but that isn't stopping the veteran punk-rocker from having a MySpace page. (I'm adding him as a friend right now, in fact.) That's because Iggy and his Stooges are reuniting for a series of shows (including one at the Esquire South by Southwest showcase) and a new album, called The Weirdness and coming out March 6.

I appreciate the appropriateness of the album title, but I'm not sure how I feel about this just-released track, "My Idea of Fun." On the one hand, I like the throwback feel, but it's not exactly groundbreaking. Tell me what you think after you read more
