Idris Elba

Best of 2012

Which Guy Do You Want to See More of in 2013?

2012 was a breakout year for so many male stars.

2012 was a breakout year for so many male stars. There were plenty of men who made their mark on TV, including Emmy winners Damian Lewis and Idris Elba and Revenge star Josh Bowman. Several of the guys we already love have a major 2013 ahead as well, like Anthony Mackie, who will appear in Gangster Squad, The Avengers 2, and Runner, Runner. We can't forget some of our favorite Brits, either, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Sam Riley, and Sam Claflin.

We're two days into 2013 and optimistic about the twelve months ahead. With so many talented men on the scene, we want to know — which of these guys are you most excited to see more of in the year ahead?

Pacific Rim Trailer: Charlie Hunnam Will Save You From the Apocalypse

As the trailer for Pacific Rim points out, most people generally assume that if aliens were to come to Earth, they'd probably come from space, right?

As the trailer for Pacific Rim points out, most people generally assume that if aliens were to come to Earth, they'd probably come from space, right? Wrong. Guillermo del Toro's upcoming sci-fi film rests on the premise that these destruction-seeking beings come from a portal deep in the ocean. This is pretty bad news for Earth; good thing we've got Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Idris Elba on the case! The two star as members of a special ops team carrying out Operation Gypsy Danger, aka Operation Kill Those Aliens. These are not your mother's aliens, either. These are giant beastly monster aliens.

Del Toro's known for his unique visual approach to filmmaking, and if this trailer is any indication of the movie, Pacific Rim is going to be epic. It's tense, there are giant Iron Man-esque suits and humongous monsters, and yet it feels oddly realistic. There's something about seeing monsters destroy actual landmarks (in this case, the Golden Gate Bridge) that sends shivers down my spine. Pacific Rim is set to open July 12, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt and Marion Cotillard Go Glam For Harper's Bazaar

Emily Blunt stepped out solo in a vivid tangerine hue at last night's Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Awards in London.

Emily Blunt stepped out solo in a vivid tangerine hue at last night's Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Awards in London. She was joined inside the event by fellow actress Marion Cotillard in addition to good-looking leading men Eddie Redmayne and Idris Elba. Emily and Marion were among the women being honored on the night. Marion took home the honor for international actor of the year, while Emily was recognized as British actor of the year. The queen, who missed out on the star-studded soiree, also took home an award as the 2012 icon of the year. Marion's expected back in the States this week promoting her latest project, Rust and Bone. She's schedule to stop by The Late Show on Friday and is expected at Monday's AFI Rust and Bone gala screening in LA prior to the film's nationwide release Nov. 23.

Movie Preview: The Losers

Avatar has boosted the career of more than just Sam Worthington — Zoe Saldana, the Na'vi's Neytiri, has also seen her career rise thanks to her blue person stint (not to mention her turn in this Summer's Star Trek).

Avatar has boosted the career of more than just Sam WorthingtonZoe Saldana, the Na'vi's Neytiri, has also seen her career rise thanks to her blue person stint (not to mention her turn in this Summer's Star Trek). Next, she'll be in another action flick, The Losers, alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, and Chris Evans. Based on a DC Comics work, the movie revolves around former members of a black ops team who seek revenge on those who tried to have them killed.

The trailer has lots of fast-paced action and humor, but it doesn't seem too far off from the looks and premise of The A-Team, whose trailer also recently debuted. Still, I wonder if Saldana's newfound familiarity will entice her new fans to see this one.

TV Tonight: Great Guest Stars on NBC

Having a new episode of The Office plus a new 30 Rock is enough to make me happy most Thursdays, but tonight's episodes have some special appeal.

Having a new episode of The Office plus a new 30 Rock is enough to make me happy most Thursdays, but tonight's episodes have some special appeal. On 30 Rock, Jon Hamm is back as Liz's neighbor and incredibly understanding date, Drew, while on The Office, Idris Elba starts his six-episode run as a new boss at Dunder Mifflin going toe-to-toe with Michael Scott.

I'm excited to see a comedic side to Elba, who's best known as Stringer Bell on The Wire. His character, Charles Minor, sounds like he's going to be a tough rival for Michael, at least based on this radio interview with Elba from earlier this month. It sounds like he's been having a blast with all the improvising on set, and frankly, I think The Office could use a little shake-up as the season draws to a close.

Meanwhile, what have Drew and Liz Lemon been up to since last we saw them? Apparently something that involves tennis and possibly a motorcycle, as seen in the promo below. Which guest star are you most psyched to see? To watch the video, just read more

Two Bits of Office-Related News

It's NBC day at TCA, and I'm most looking forward to the session with Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, and the creators of the non-spinoff spinoff of The Office.

It's NBC day at TCA, and I'm most looking forward to the session with Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, and the creators of the non-spinoff spinoff of The Office. The show is still technically untitled, but some bits of the plot have dribbled out thanks to copies of the pilot script that were left in reporters' hotel rooms last night. Meanwhile, The Office mothership is getting an exciting new cast member — well, at least for fans of The Wire. Read on . . .

RocknRolla: Slow to Build With a Rockin' Finish

RocknRolla is extremely similar in tone and format to director Guy Ritchie's other films, and I must say I'm starting to think that his movies are only as good as the actors in them.

RocknRolla is extremely similar in tone and format to director Guy Ritchie's other films, and I must say I'm starting to think that his movies are only as good as the actors in them. Snatch is a good ensemble piece overall, but the most memorable parts are due to standout performances by actors like Brad Pitt and Alan Ford. Though not as good a film as Snatch, RocknRolla similarly benefits from some fine performers, in this case Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong, and Toby Kebbell, among other members of the extensive cast in this convoluted story.

And by convoluted I mean I'm not sure I can even get into the plot here without writing another six paragraphs or so. Suffice to say there are a couple high-level criminal guys (played by Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong and others), a resourceful accountant (Thandie Newton), a few bumbling low-level thugs (Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy), and a druggie rock star, Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell) all chasing around large amounts of money and/or a beloved painting. There are a lot of men behaving badly because they had cruel fathers. There's a good amount of violence (often paired with great music) and torture mixed with dry, dark humor. It's funny and exciting — but not consistently so. For more on what I mean, read more

Thandie Newton

Gerard, Thandie, and Idris RocknRoll Their Way to LA

Thandie Newton was joined by costars Idris Elba and Gerard Butler last night for the LA premiere of RocknRolla.

Thandie Newton was joined by costars Idris Elba and Gerard Butler last night for the LA premiere of RocknRolla. They've been all over to promote the film, from Canada to the UK, and it's finally opening to limited release in the US on Friday. Director Guy Ritchie missed this one, but the cast seems to have gotten pretty close after all that traveling — Thandie and Gerard even shared a few kisses on the red carpet. Gerard's romance with Jennifer Aniston may have ended up being nothing, but even happily married Thandie seemed to enjoy his charming company.
