Box Office: Rio Soars Above the Competition

It was another big weekend for animated film Rio, which nailed the number one spot at the box office for the second week in a row with $26.8 million.

It was another big weekend for animated film Rio, which nailed the number one spot at the box office for the second week in a row with $26.8 million. It beat out a couple of new releases, like Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, which pulled in $25.8 million, and Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon's circus romance Water For Elephants, which earned $17.5 million in third place.

Hop managed to make it to number four with $12.5 million — not surprising since it was Easter weekend. Finally, Scream 4 just squeaked into the top five with a total of $7.2 million in its second week of release.

Despite the good reviews of Scream 4, it couldn't beat fellow new release Rio at the box office. The animated flick, which features the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, brought in $40 million to claim the number one spot. Scream 4 trailed it with $19.3 million, a significantly less opening total than previous Scream sequels (Scream 3 opened with $34.7 million back in 2000).

Easter bunny kids' movie Hop, last week's box office winner, came in third with $11.2 million. Fourth place was claimed by inspirational surf film Soul Surfer with $7.4 million, and the top five was completed by Saoirse Ronan's action vehicle Hanna, with $7.3 million.

Box Office: Russell Brand Stays on Top With Arthur and Hop

Russell Brand was his own biggest competitor at the box office this weekend, as his new film Arthur was bested by his animated flick, Hop that earned 21.6 million and took the top spot for the second week in a row. Arthur settled for second place and a lackluster $12.6 million, followed by fellow newcomer Hanna, which garnered $12.3 million.

Soul Surfer impressively nabbed the number four spot with $11.1 million in its debut weekend, while Insidious finished fifth with $9.7 million. The James Franco/Natalie Portman stoner comedy Your Highness couldn't even crack the top five in its first weekend out, settling for sixth with a meager $9.6 million.

Who says holiday movies are only for December?

Who says holiday movies are only for December? Russell Brand's animated bunny film Hop easily took the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend, taking in an impressive $38.1 million. Despite an SNL appearance by Jake Gyllenhaal himself, newbie action flick Source Code trailed in second with $15 million. Horror flick Insidious took third with $13.4 million, while former number one movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules slid to fourth with $10.2 million. Limitless clung onto a top five spot with $9.4 million.

Russell Brand Makes the Easter Bunny Hip in the Hop Trailer

When the first teaser for Hop premiered, all we could see was a a little bit of Russell Brand as an animated bunny going to town on a drum kit.

When the first teaser for Hop premiered, all we could see was a a little bit of Russell Brand as an animated bunny going to town on a drum kit. Now we have the full trailer for the CGI/live action hybrid with more of the Brand-voiced "E.B.," the little drummer who is in line to inherit the job of Easter Bunny. The problem is that he doesn't want to follow in the family business: he has ambitions of being in a band (this generation of rabbits is so irresponsible).

When he leaves home to fulfill his dreams of fame, he's nearly run over by James Marsden, the human who becomes his new, albeit reluctant, sidekick. The two begin their weird friendship, while the bunny is both pursuing his dreams (which includes a cameo from David Hasselhoff at America's Got Talent) and being pursued by his bunny brethren. The preview is actually kind of funny at times, thanks to Brand's mumble-y humor, though he also makes the beloved Easter Bunny kind of a perv. Watch for yourself when you read more

James Marsden: Love Him or Leave Him?

As much as I love to see James Marsden popping up in a romance (you know, he's usually the other guy the girl doesn't end up with; see Enchanted and The Notebook) he's still one of those actors whose name a lot of people still don't know.

As much as I love to see James Marsden popping up in a romance (you know, he's usually the other guy the girl doesn't end up with; see Enchanted and The Notebook) he's still one of those actors whose name a lot of people still don't know.

Hopefully, his face and name will get a little more familiar with time — he has been cast in live action/CGI hybrid I Hop opposite Russell Brand. Marsden plays a slacker, while Brand plays, um, the Easter Bunny whom Marsden's character accidentally injures and then has to take in.

While you're digesting that plot, let's just focus on Marsden. His rakish good looks and charm can lift up a stagnant comedy (ahem, 27 Dresses) but he still makes some questionable work choices (Sex Drive, the upcoming remake of Death at a Funeral). What do you make of him?

Just Before Easter, Two New Easter Movies Announced

Just in time for this year's Easter weekend, two new Easter-themed movies have been announced — and they actually sound pretty darn adorable.

Just in time for this year's Easter weekend, two new Easter-themed movies have been announced — and they actually sound pretty darn adorable. Check it out:

Hip Hop — Sony Animation has preemptively picked up this script, planning to make it a mix of CGI and live-action. In the movie, "Easter Bunny decides to retire and hides out as a pet with a suburban family, turning their lives upside down. The tone is being described as along the lines of Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Santa Clause."

I Hop — No, not like the house of pancakes (though I kinda hope they do some kind of promotional tie-in). Anyway, this is the one that I think sounds cutest: "In I Hop, the Easter Bunny is hit by a car driven by a slacker. When the bunny can't hop because his leg is broken, the driver must train to take over the job and save Easter." Though it's probably meant to be a kids' movie, I kinda wish Seth Rogen would play the slacker in I Hop.

Looks like 2010 is gonna be hoppin'. (Ugh. Sorry, sorry!)
