One Billion Rise Up to Fight Violence Against Women

On Valentine's Day, women around the world rallied, danced, protested, flash mobbed, and spoke out in a global day of action to end violence against women.

On Valentine's Day, women around the world rallied, danced, protested, flash mobbed, and spoke out in a global day of action to end violence against women. The worldwide campaigns were instigated by One Billion Rising, an organization that hopes to stop abuse against women. The name refers to the one billion women who have survived abuse and the number of women the organization asks to support them. The worldwide event — called V-Day — celebrated its 15th anniversary yesterday and urges our gender to "walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence."

Famous women like Rosario Dawson, Anne Hathaway, Thandie Newton, Marisa Tomei, Jane Fonda, and Glenn Close attended V-Day events in cities that included London, Hollywood, and New York, while women young and old took to the streets of India, China, Bangladesh, Mexico, Poland, and other countries to stand up for the cause. See the beautiful, joyous photos of this important international campaign now!

Oscars: Glenn Close

Up for best actress for her role in Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close proved that age is just a number in this forest green fit-and-flare Zac Posen creation.

Up for best actress for her role in Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close proved that age is just a number in this forest green fit-and-flare Zac Posen creation. Its fitted silhouette hugged every curve to perfection, right down to the strapless corseted bodice, and we love how she paired the gown with a matching tuxedo blazer topper for a classic finish. Her diamond chandelier earrings and slick black clutch added a bit of sparkle to the otherwise full-on emerald ensemble. What do you think — did Glenn nail it?

Glenn Close Says She "Looked at Charlie Chaplin" to Pose as a Man in Albert Nobbs

In Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close stars as a 19th century woman posing as a man to get by.

In Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close stars as a 19th century woman posing as a man to get by. The movie is out today in wide release and just in time, because Close just earned an Oscar nomination for best actress for the role. Recently, I sat down with Close to chat about bringing the story from the stage to the screen, how she got into character, and why her costume was far more comfortable than what she wears for her TV series Damages.

Albert Nobbs Trailer: Glenn Close Knows How to Be a Gentleman

Glenn Close has tackled a lot of complex roles, but none have been quite like the part she plays in Albert Nobbs.

Glenn Close has tackled a lot of complex roles, but none have been quite like the part she plays in Albert Nobbs. She stars as the title character, a man in 19th-century Ireland who lives a simple life as a waiter in a busy hotel. He generally keeps to himself, but there's something he's really keeping to himself: his gender. Nobbs is actually a woman who has adopted the dress of a man to survive the social climate of the time, but even though Nobbs has kept up the charade for a while, he encounters a few complications. First, another man comes into Nobbs's life and challenges his identity, then Nobbs decides to pursue a dream of opening his own tobacco shop, which requires taking a wife, and he sets his sights on a maid in his hotel (Mia Wasikowska).

There's an undercurrent that Nobbs is on the verge of being discovered at all times, but the trailer plays up the lighter aspects of the story — especially the interesting "love triangle" that Nobbs gets involved in. But the real draw of the film is to see Close as a man, a role that's already earning her awards buzz. To get a hint of how convincingly she mans up, just watch the trailer when you keep reading

Who Should Win the Emmy For Best Lead Actress, Drama?

You've been weighing in on who should win Emmy honors, and I've been loving your arguments!

You've been weighing in on who should win Emmy honors, and I've been loving your arguments! Now that the lead guys have had their turn in my Emmy breakdowns, it's time to sound off on some of the leading female contenders (Friday Night Lights fans, I'm sure you'll want to chime in!). Let's begin with the drama category.

This year brings in new blood, as Mad Men's January Jones and Friday Night Lights star Connie Britton both enter the competition for the first time. They'll be up against Emmy vets, including Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order: SVU, who is up for her seventh nomination (though she's only won once), and Kyra Sedgwick of The Closer, who is making her fifth attempt. Plus, we've got defending champ from the past two years Glenn Close of Damages. Early predictions name Julianna Margulies as a possible front-runner, and although it's her first nod for The Good Wife, she's no stranger to Emmy, having earned six nominations while on ER.

This could be a tight race, so who do you think should win? Share your vote below, and then fill out my Emmy ballot — you could even win an iPad!

Glenn Close Lists Her Upper West Side Digs

$11.8 million is a lot of money.

$11.8 million is a lot of money. A lot of money. If I had that kind of money, I would most definitely buy myself a beautiful spread, and hire a fancy decorator to fill it with killer décor. But apparently Glenn Close doesn't have the same priorities.

She's put her 2,000-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-and-one-half bath apartment on Central Park West on the market for a whopping $11.8 million, and from the looks of it — furnishings spare, underwhelming, and poorly arranged — decorating is not one of her priorities. But that's OK because the bones of the place are fabulous. It boasts a wood-burning fireplace, two expansive terraces with french doors overlooking Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, two studies, a guest room, hardwood floors, coffered ceilings, and custom Craftsman-style cabinetry. It's just waiting for some glamorous Manhattanite with big pockets to swoop it up. Know anyone?

The Ladies Have Color and Sparkle Despite the Gray in LA

A little rain didn't dampen the fashion show on the red carpet at last night's Golden Globes in LA.

A little rain didn't dampen the fashion show on the red carpet at last night's Golden Globes in LA. Some of our favorite ladies had to accessorize with umbrellas, but apart from wet trains, they seemed pretty unfazed. Diane Kruger led the evening's artsy trend in her bold pink Christian Lacroix gown, while Cameron Diaz went bright in her red Alexander McQueen. Sandra Bullock also decided on color with purple, though Marion Cotillard went a little more low-key in a muted dark green. Jennifer Garner, meanwhile, opted to go the sparkly route in Versace.

A few ladies, though, decided to forgo the color — Penelope Cruz chose black with a part-lace Giorgio Armani Prive gown, as did January Jones with her Lanvin. Kate Hudson and Anna Kendrick took opposite approaches, each choosing to go with light Marchesa numbers. Drew Barrymore also picked Versace, though her dress was one-shouldered and nude-colored. Fab and Bella had things covered on the style and beauty fronts with their love it or hate it polls, so make sure to check in with them for all the latest news from the carpet!

Say What? Glenn Close Speaks Up About Sister's Mental Illness

"We didn't know that it wasn't Jess just being wild, there was something going on there.

"We didn't know that it wasn't Jess just being wild, there was something going on there. . . We come from the tradition that you hardly ever went to a psychiatrist — it just wasn't done. You certainly don't talk about depression, or alcoholism, or any mental illness. It's just not done, and I think a lot of people still feel that."

Glenn Close went on Good Morning America today to discuss her family's struggle to understand her sister Jessie's mental illness. Jessie was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 47-years-old. The actress and her sister have filmed a public service announcement with hopes of challenging the stigma attached to mental illness.
