What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores.

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download.

Modest, Modest Mouse: Indie darlings Modest Mouse have been around since 1993, but made their mainstream break in 2004 with the success of the song "Float On" and the album Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Since then they've released just one other CD, but along the way have amassed quite of collection of unreleased tracks and B-sides. Being released on its new EP, No One's First, and You're Next, are the re-polished versions of these songs. In addition to this EP, check out the Heath Ledger-directed video for Modest Mouse's "King Rat," which recently came online.

Must-have music: As featured in my monthly must-haves, Yim Yames' EP of George Harrison covers comes out today. Simply titled Tribute To, the six-song disc — which was recorded days after Harrison's death in 2001 — includes classics like "My Sweet Lord," and "All Things Must Pass." If you don't recognize the name, Yim Yames traditionally goes by Jim James and is the lead-singer of My Morning Jacket. It's cool to hear Yim/Jim a little more acoustic and pared-down. Download this one if you're a fan of Jacket or Harrison.

Singing and songwriting: Technically, Pete Yorn's new album doesn't drop until June 23, but today you can download it on iTunes. I'm always open to a new Yorn album and I find his style of alt-country totally appealing. This is the kind of music that's well-suited for these long Summer days. Oh, and I should note this is not the album Yorn's working on with Scarlett Johansson. Check out "Don't Wanna Cry" and "Thinking You" to start.

The greatest hits: I can't get enough of Beatles music, and today we have a whole new compilation of George Harrison's greatest hits. His widow, Olivia, recently said of the album: "It's a collection that spans his career, and we put them together in a way we thought they would just kind of flow, you know, musically, into one another." I really love "My Sweet Lord," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Scorsese Goes From the Stones to the Beatles

After having completed the Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light (which won't be coming out until 2008, boooo), Martin Scorsese is moving on to another legendary rock group: The Beatles.

After having completed the Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light (which won't be coming out until 2008, boooo), Martin Scorsese is moving on to another legendary rock group: The Beatles. Scorsese has announced that he will direct a documentary all about the life of Beatles guitarist George Harrison. Variety continues:

Pic will cover Harrison's Beatles career and later years that included a successful solo music career as well as a foray as a movie mogul when he backed Handmade Films and made pics such as Monty Python's Life of Brian and Time Bandits. Scorsese...will also focus closely on the Eastern spiritual pursuits that were central to Harrison's life.

I love that Scorsese has so much passion for music. He directed the 2005 documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, along with the stellar "rockumentary" The Last Waltz, and he was involved in some of Michael Jackson's music videos back in the day. He's clearly committed to honoring some of the world's greatest musicians and I really respect that. I wonder who's next on his list?
