Game of Thrones

I know a lot of other things happen on Game of Thrones this week, but I can't stop thinking about that final scene. But before that unforgettable moment, we check in with a lot of characters, like Jaime and Brienne, Jon Snow, Tyrion, and Daenerys. While Tyrion gets a new (but not great) title, Daenerys builds up her army by sacrificing something dear to her, and Jon and his Wilding companions come upon a grisly scene.

Game of Thrones season three isn't holding back on the graphic imagery, and this week is a good example of that — it's both violent and sexual, and there are a few moments we need to talk about. To get to them, just keep reading.

If you were disappointed (like I was) that core Game of Thrones characters like Bran, Arya, and Jaime were missing from the season premiere, then chances are good that you were happy with the second episode. Not only do we catch up with these missed characters, but we also meet a few new faces, like Jojen and Meera Reed, Beric Dondarrion, and Lady Olenna.

Though this episode isn't packed with game changers, there's a healthy dose of character development as well as a few hints regarding what's to come. Arya gets thrown for a loop when she's recognized by someone from her past, Catelyn loses her father, and Theon Greyjoy is forced to suffer the repercussions of what went down at Winterfell. We all knew this was coming: though it just returned this week for a third season, Game of Thrones has already been renewed for season four. HBO announced the pickup after Sunday's premiere pulled in a record number of viewers. The fourth installment will be another 10-episode season, and given that the current season is following only half of George R. R. Martin's novel A Storm of Swords, season four will likely cover the second half of the book.

Game of Thrones is back after months of waiting, and the third-season opener roars in with a vengeance. The premiere picks up a short time after the second-season finale (here's a quick refresher if you need it), and while we don't check in with every character this week, we are reunited with a few Stark children, Daenerys, Joffrey, and more. It's very true to the Game of Thrones spirit, what with fantasy creatures, body parts being cut off, and many characters resolving to take their next big step.

There are some spectacles this week, but there's more setup than big events. Still, it's an exciting way to kick off season three, and there are, of course, lots of things I'm still thinking about (like nipples). Let's get to it after the jump.
