What to Rent

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Not a ton to choose from in this week's DVD releases, but here are the two big titles hitting shelves.

Not a ton to choose from in this week's DVD releases, but here are the two big titles hitting shelves. Give them a look and if they're not for you, you can always join my Netflix challenge to broaden your selection.

Shutter Island

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a US Marshall sent to investigate a mental hospital for the criminally insane. As he gets further into finding the truth, he starts to distrust the wardens who are obviously hiding something — and he gradually starts to feel a little crazy himself. Though not as captivating as some of Scorsese's other work, I found Shutter Island to be a mix of intrigue and some beautiful imagery that makes it a solid rental. The twist ending also makes it the kinda movie I'd like to see again under a magnifying glass. If the movie leaves you feeling more inquisitive than scared, try the Blu-Ray version, which includes an informative look at psychiatric therapy in the 1950s.

From Paris With Love

John Travolta sports a bald head and goatee as an American spy trying to stop a terrorist attack; Jonathan Rhys Meyers is the young guy in the US Ambassador's office who becomes his partner in crime fighting. I was a little leery about the film when it first came to theaters, but perhaps I'll give it a go since this week's pickings are so slim. One thing in its favor: the DVD extras include a featurette look at real-life spies, which appeals to the Alias-lover in me.

Box Office: Dear John Pushes Avatar Out of the Top Spot

Surprise — it finally happened!

Surprise — it finally happened! After seven straight weeks at No. 1 and record-breaking ticket sales, Avatar got the boot. Which film pulled off the upset? Well, it wasn't Valentine's Day as the majority of you guessed, but Dear John. The Nicholas Sparks romance took in $32.4 million in its debut week in theaters, dethroning the James Cameron box office king which came in second with $23.6 million.

Despite mixed feelings on John Travolta's From Paris With Love, the new film ranked in at third in its first week with $8.1 million. Edge of Darkness followed close behind at No. 4 with $7 million, and Tooth Fairy finished out the top five with $6.5 million.

Watch, Pass, or Rent: From Paris With Love

It's been a long time since I've found myself excited about a John Travolta movie, and his latest fare doesn't exactly strike my fancy, either.

It's been a long time since I've found myself excited about a John Travolta movie, and his latest fare doesn't exactly strike my fancy, either. In From Paris With Love, Travolta teams up with Jonathan Rhys Meyers as an American spy trying to stop a terrorist attack. Doesn't sound half bad on paper, but something about Travolta's bald head and beard combo gives me the creeps.

On the other hand, movie theaters aren't exactly brimming with exciting new stuff these days — if you've already seen Avatar and the rest of the Oscar nominees, the pickings are pretty slim. Plus, Jonathan Rhys Meyers usually makes for some pretty nice eye candy if nothing else, and it could be a couple of hours of solidly mindless entertainment. The movie opens in wide release tomorrow — what's your plan?

It's a busy time for Tinseltown: Another 20-something city girl: Anne Hathaway will play the lead role in the film version of a book I really enjoyed: The Opposite of Love.
