What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

Several of you stocked up on movies over the holiday break, so why stop now?

Several of you stocked up on movies over the holiday break, so why stop now? This week brings new DVD releases that should keep you on the couch. Along with these films, you can also rent The Last Exorcism, Case 39, Howl, and The Yellow Handkerchief with Kristen Stewart.

Dinner For Schmucks

Paul Rudd plays Tim, a corporate guy on the lookout for a guest to bring to his boss's annual dinner. There's only requisite: Tim's plus one has to be a total buffoon. Lucky for him, he crosses paths with Barry (Steve Carell) whose favorite hobby is mouse taxidermy. When he goes to the shindig as Tim's date, it's one crude joke and pratfall after another. The film didn't go over well with critics; however, there are a few funny scenes, thanks to quirky supporting characters, including Kristen Schaal and Jemaine Clement. DVD extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes and deleted scenes.

Machete

Director Robert Rodriguez has some fun with this campy, violent free-for-all. Danny Trejo stars as the title character, a Mexican ex-Federale living in Texas. When he's hired to assassinate an anti-immigration senator (Robert De Niro), but then betrayed by his boss, Machete goes on a bloody revenge bender. Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Lindsay Lohan also appear. Many of you opted to see Machete in theaters, but if you're somewhat squeamish, perhaps you'll feel a little more comfortable watching it at home. DVD extras include deleted scenes and an audience reaction track.

After a three-week box office reign, Inception has finally been knocked out of the top spot. It was bested by The Other Guys, which took in $35.6 million in its debut weekend. Christopher Nolan's thriller continues to earn the big bucks though, adding $18.6 million to an impressive total that's now over $230 million.

Step Up 3D settled for third place with $15.5 million, knocking Angelina Jolie's Salt to fourth with $11.1 million. Rounding out the top five was Dinner For Schmucks with $10.5 million.

Box Office: Inception Puts the Competition to Bed

Inception continued its command over the box office for a third weekend, raking in $27.5 million in theaters.

Inception continued its command over the box office for a third weekend, raking in $27.5 million in theaters. That was enough to beat out the comic duo of Steve Carell and Paul Rudd whose new release Dinner for Schmucks bowed with a mediocre $23.3 million.

The Angelina Jolie thriller Salt came in third with $19.2 million, followed by Despicable Me with $15.5 million. Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore finished out the top five with $12.5 million. As for Zac Efron, unfortunately his good looks didn't translate into huge ticket sales; Charlie St. Cloud had to settle for sixth place with an underwhelming $12.1 million.

Role Play: Which Paul Rudd Is Hotter?

At 40, Paul Rudd is still boyishly cute and just plain lovable.

At 40, Paul Rudd is still boyishly cute and just plain lovable. Though Buzz didn't love it, this week he's starring in Dinner For Schmucks. His character is required to bring a less-than-intelligent guest to dinner for everyone to laugh at. Not surprisingly, it's a remake of a French film, Le dîner de cons or "dinner for idiots."

So because he's adorable and because we can, let's Role Play with Paul Rudd.

Dinner For Schmucks: Don't Make a Reservation

It's tough when two of your favorite actors get together for a promising-looking film that falls flat — you want so badly to love their work, but sometimes you can't help feeling unsatisfied.

It's tough when two of your favorite actors get together for a promising-looking film that falls flat — you want so badly to love their work, but sometimes you can't help feeling unsatisfied. Such is the case with Dinner For Schmucks, which reunites two of my favorite funny men, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd.

They play an odd couple thrown together when Rudd's character Tim accidentally meets Barry (Carell), a man who fills a strange and specific need: Tim has to bring an idiot to a gathering thrown by his boss in order to get into his good graces. If Tim brings the biggest idiot, he'll also get in line for a promotion at work. The potential for humor is there — but like a too-long dinner party, it starts out hot but gets cold and stale by the end.
