James Franco Giving His Right Arm For Danny Boyle

The latest news coming out of the casting rumor mill is that James Franco has signed on for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours.

The latest news coming out of the casting rumor mill is that James Franco has signed on for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours. Based on a true story, the film follows Aron Ralston, a mountaineer who got pinned under a rock for days during an excursion in Utah. In order to survive, Ralston cut off his own arm (that scene's going to be hard to stomach, but hopefully Franco's good looks will at least help a little).

With the Slumdog Millionaire director behind the camera, I think this could be just the sort of weightier role that Franco needs (it should at least help me forget about his bizarro arch on General Hospital). I was impressed with him in Milk, and this should be an even more challenging opportunity to show off his skills.

Are you excited to see James Franco in such a heavy part? If he's by himself for 127 hours like the title suggests, he's bound to get a ton of screen time!

Danny Boyle's Next Project Will Climb to 127 Hours

After the slums of Mumbai, where will Danny Boyle go next?

After the slums of Mumbai, where will Danny Boyle go next? To the mountains: the Oscar recipient for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire has signed on for his next project, 127 Hours. The film centers on the real-life plight of climber Aron Ralston, who got pinned under a boulder during an excursion in 2003 and saved himself by cutting off his own arm with a dull knife.

The title undoubtedly refers to the length of Ralston's ordeal, which could be boring or just stressful in the hands of someone else, but Boyle is known for his ability to tackle harrowing material (see: Trainspotting and 28 Days Later). I already can't wait to see this because of Boyle and the story itself; it reminds me of Into the Wild — that is, if things had ended differently for Christopher McCandless.

Freida and Dev Head Out While Younger Costars Still Play

Freida Pinto shared a thumbs up with fans and photographers while Dev departed separately from LAX yesterday.

Freida Pinto shared a thumbs up with fans and photographers while Dev departed separately from LAX yesterday. Meanwhile, her costars were still enjoying their California adventure. Slumdog Millionaire director and new Oscar winner Danny Boyle brought the movie's younger actors to the Santa Monica Piers the day after the crew took a trip to Disneyland. It must be a dramatic culture shock for the mini-movie stars, who will have a ton of stories to share with their friends when they head back to Mumbai.

Come Inside the Governors Ball

After the big show in the Kodak Theater, the first stop for many of the attendees was the Governors Ball.

After the big show in the Kodak Theater, the first stop for many of the attendees was the Governors Ball. Along with attending this year's Oscars via the red carpet and the press room, we were fortunate enough to have a ticket to the fancy affair. While on the inside we watched the celebrities feast on their Wolfgang Puck meal set in the Asian-themed room decor. Celebs made their way through additional television press, which included a lot of singing from the youngest of the Slumdog cast, who were some of the last to arrive. Anne Hathaway continued to make it a family affair posing with her brother. She was being greeted nonstop and barely found any time to eat her meal, which included a three-tiered chocolate dessert with an Oscar on the top. Robert Pattinson and fellow teen heartthrob Zac Efron chatted and toasted with Vanessa Hudgens before heading over to the VF afterparty. There was lots of casual mingling with peers in the ballroom and some took a few smoking breaks on the side. Heidi and Seal continued to make the rounds, but were they your favorite Oscar couple of the night?

The Slumdog Actors Take on Disney, Woody, and M. Night

The entire cast of Slumdog Millionaire is ecstatic over winning Best Picture — Freida Pinto looked gorgeous in her bright yellow gown at the Fox Searchlight celebration in LA while her young costars posed with Mickey at Disneyland yesterday.

The entire cast of Slumdog Millionaire is ecstatic over winning Best Picture — Freida Pinto looked gorgeous in her bright yellow gown at the Fox Searchlight celebration in LA while her young costars posed with Mickey at Disneyland yesterday. The younger kids will be heading back to school, but Dev and Freida are just getting started with their careers. Next up, Freida will be working on Woody Allen's next film, and Dev Patel joined M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. For now, they're still gushing about their big win, which included a stop by Oprah with Best Director Danny Boyle. Here's what they said:

  • Danny on the film: "It looked like it might go to DVD and have no release in North America. It's always been like that; it's always been like a Cinderella story. [...] It's a huge historic moment really for Bollywood and Hollywood. It's the first time where they've reached across to each other."
  • Dev on the Oscars: "Walking the red carpet with all of these stars that have inspired me to get into acting, and they're behind me . . . it was a sensory overload for me. I couldn't believe it. I was just all over the place bouncing around. It was great."
  • Freida on the dating rumors about her and Dev: "The two of us are really good friends. This is our first film — we've been sailing in the same boat. We just help each other so much, just balance off each other — so people have translated that into something else."

Dev and Freida have been side by side for this whole crazy ride, and joining with the rest of their costars, everyone seems excited about taking home such an honor.

From the Press Room: A Thrilled Danny Boyle

One of the most delightful things about Slumdog Millionaire taking away so many Oscars this year is that there's been such a spotlight on the connectedness of the world and the appreciation for and the fusion (a word Danny Boyle just used a few times) of world cultures.

One of the most delightful things about Slumdog Millionaire taking away so many Oscars this year is that there's been such a spotlight on the connectedness of the world and the appreciation for and the fusion (a word Danny Boyle just used a few times) of world cultures. In the press room, a very excited, very happy Best Director winner, Danny Boyle, had a lot to say. Here are some highlights:

On telling love stories: "It is a love story, but it's like, heavily disguised . . . I think I have to heavily disguise [the love stories], really . . . It's a chance to get ourselves lost in romance."

On Slumdog being a triumph for smaller films: "It's a triumph for this kind of film, really . . . It's working against the odds, in a way." He talks about Heath Ledger's work being acknowledged, which he thinks is deserved, but that we should keep in mind that many actors begin in the small, independent movies. "That's where you learn your craft."

On the rumor that the two leads are romantically involved: "I have no idea! I don't really know . . . I have no idea, and I wouldn't want to take away from it." (Producer Christian Colson swiftly squashed the rumor, saying Dev Patel and Freida Pinto are not dating.)

On his belief that every film should be imperfect: Boyle says he "absolutely" still feels that way and talks about having left off the choreographer from the credits — "that is imperfection walking and talking and you have to hold your head up and acknowledge how shameful that is . . . he taught Dev Patel how to dance!" He apologizes again for the omission.

On being recognized by the Academy: "Being — we're Brits, you know — trapped in the middle [of Hollywood and Bollywood] . . . In culture, fusion is a wonderful thing. And I felt it most in the music . . . You progress through fusion, things melding together."

On the topic of miracles: "I've always believed in miracles, actually."
