4 Words of Warning Before You See Cosmopolis

Robert Pattinson seems determined to differentiate himself from the character of Edward Cullen, and his turn in Cosmopolis is probably the biggest departure from his vampire persona thus far.

Robert Pattinson seems determined to differentiate himself from the character of Edward Cullen, and his turn in Cosmopolis is probably the biggest departure from his vampire persona thus far. Pattinson stars as Eric Packer, a young billionaire who takes a limo ride across a futuristic New York City with the intent of getting a haircut. As he worries about his business and investments, he has various interactions with riders he invites into his high-tech vehicle, along with dangerous encounters outside the car as well. David Cronenberg directed the film, and since his distinct style and Cosmopolis are so different from Pattinson's other projects, I thought I'd extend a few concerns for those who are contemplating seeing the film because of the actor's involvement.

  • It's not the best Robert Pattinson film. Though Pattinson certainly looks slick in the thriller, this is not his finest acting moment. I blame the script, which is full of theatrical, stilted dialogue that makes the actor sound monotone and robotic. Pattinson isn't the only one whose performance suffers because of it; talented actresses Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton show up to deliver monologues about the economy or society, and it's about as stimulating as listening to someone describe the dream they had last night.
  • The format is unusual. Most of the movie takes place inside his limo (though Packer does occasionally get out for a meal), and each supporting character only shows up for a single scene (save for Sarah Gadon, who plays Packer's wife). Since each person basically comes in and expounds on a subject, it feels like a series of acts in a play, and it also doesn't allow us to get invested in any character aside from Packer.

Robert Pattinson burst back onto the scene this week after a few weeks out of the spotlight, and he's been spotted living it up in NYC while in the midst of a Cosmopolis press tour. On Monday, Rob headed over to The Daily Show With Jon Stewart for his first postbreakup appearance, followed by the premiere of his film. Tuesday was another early start, as Rob rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange before sharing lunch with director David Cronenberg and stepping out for a night with friends. Rob had another busy morning Wednesday when he visited Good Morning America.

He joined Cosmopolis director David Cronenberg at The Times Center to participate in a TimesTalks session about their collaboration on the dramatic flick. During the discussion, David complimented Rob on his work, saying, "If Rob were a violin, he'd be a Stradivarius."

Earlier in the day, Rob stopped by GMA to discuss his role in the project and politely dismissed questions about his personal life. He's remained focused on sharing anecdotes about the film while staying mum about his current relationship with Kristen Stewart. Rob seems to be making the best of his time in the Big Apple and was spotted in high spirits while partying with friends late last night. Rob may be facing uncertainties in his personal life, but his career is on the up and up. In addition to signing up for roles in Mission: Blacklist and The Rover, he's also reportedly in negotiations to star opposite Naomi Watts in Queen of the Desert.

It's been a busy week for Rob, who kicked off his Cosmopolis promotional tour on Monday with a sit-down interview with The Daily Show's Jon Stewart. Rob gracefully made his way through his chat with Jon, avoiding questions about Kristen Stewart's cheating scandal while enjoying some ice cream, and this morning he was equally professional and did his best to sidestep questions about his personal life. Rob has one more TV stop planned during his stay in the Big Apple. Tomorrow he's expected to drop by MTV before his David Cronenberg-directed film hits theaters on Friday.

Robert Pattinson has done his best to tiptoe around answering personal questions this week, in light of Kristen Stewart's recent cheating scandal, but on Tuesday he sat down with his Cosmopolis director, David Cronenberg, and Time magazine to talk fans, fame, and his future. He downplayed his relationship status during "girl talk" with Jon Stewart, and during today's breakfast chat with GMA he focused on his upcoming movie. Tomorrow caps off his East Coast promotional tour before the film's Friday release, and from there it looks like Rob will begin prepping for Breaking Dawn Part 2's Fall international press tour. Here's more from Rob:

  • Rob on his fans: "I guess if people think they're worried about you, it's sweet. It's kind of odd. But at the same time, the world is a pretty cruel place, so whatever inspires people to suddenly feel this kindness, hopefully they'll look at themselves and they'll look at their own lives and realize, [awestruck, Eureka-moment voice] I have the ability to . . . to empathize with people!"
  • Rob on fame: "The world would be a much better place, I think, if all these bankers and billionaires were followed by paparazzi and studied as carefully. As soon as people look at something very closely, the whole thing just crumbles."
  • Rob on his next project: "I'm going to make this movie Mission: Blacklist about Eric Maddox, an Army interrogator who was one of the major people responsible for finding Saddam Hussein . . . The story is crazy, absolutely bizarre. It's a really cool director called Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire. We're going to shoot in Iraq next Summer. In January, I'm doing The Rover with David Michôd (who did the Australian movie Animal Kingdom), a futuristic Western with Guy Pearce."

Robert Pattinson, dressed in Gucci, hit the red carpet in NYC tonight for the premiere of Cosmopolis. It's the first time Robert has been spotted in public since the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal. He posed for photos before moving inside for the screening. Hundreds of fans came out to show their support for Rob, some even lining up overnight to get a glimpse of the star. Cosmopolis director David Cronenberg and Rob's leading lady from the movie, Sarah Gadon, were also both there amid the fan frenzy.

The film made its worldwide debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, but now Rob's sharing his David Cronenberg-directed project with a North American audience. Kristen Stewart was on hand for the French premiere, though that was before the photos of Kristen cheating with Rupert Sanders emerged. Since then, Rob reportedly moved out of their shared Los Feliz, CA, home and retreated to Reese Witherspoon's Ojai estate to avoid the spotlight. Today marks the first of many upcoming promotional appearances for Rob. In addition to the premiere, he also taped an episode of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and is scheduled to ring the bell at the NY Stock Exhange tomorrow, followed by a GMA stop on Wednesday and an MTV appearance on Thursday.
