Cloud Atlas

Tom Tykwer teams with Andy and Lana Wachowski to take on the epic task of adapting David Mitchell's sweeping novel that occurs in different times and places. The filmmakers enlist a crew of A-list actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Broadbent, to play several versions (and races) of themselves. Their interweaving stories prove how the present can be affected deeply by the past, and despite its cast and how visually impressive it is, Cloud Atlas is a letdown. The DVD comes with the featurette, "A Film Like No Other."

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III

Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray, and Jason Schwartzman collaborate with writer/director Roman Coppola for this self-absorbed turkey of a film. Sheen is Charles Swan, a graphic designer whose life falls apart when his true love (Katheryn Winnick) breaks up with him. Set in a stylized Los Angeles, the "comedy" outstays its welcome, even at a quick 84-minute run time. Aubrey Plaza, Patricia Arquette, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead also star.

Halle Heats Up a Cold Cloud Atlas Night in a Peekaboo Dress

Halle Berry sported a formfitting Catherine Malandrino dress with leather and sheer panels for last night's Moscow premiere of Cloud Atlas.

Halle Berry sported a formfitting Catherine Malandrino dress with leather and sheer panels for last night's Moscow premiere of Cloud Atlas. After posing for pictures, Halle slipped on a coat to protect against the chilly Russian weather. The actress traveled to Europe for the latest debut of the film after spending the early part of the week celebrating Halloween with her daughter, Nahla Aubry. Halle and Nahla visited a pumpkin patch in LA on Monday, where Nahla debuted her costume and had some fun riding a giant, inflatable slide with her mom.

Cloud Atlas is heading overseas after a relatively disappointing opening weekend at the US box office. The epic movie took a backseat to Ben Affleck's Argo. Critics have also had mixed reactions to the project, which is the latest from the Wachowskis, the directing duo behind The Matrix series.

Cloud Atlas' Many Faces: See Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and More as Different Races and Genders

Halle Berry

Now that Cloud Atlas is in theaters, the world can finally check out the film based on the epic novel by David Mitchell. The film covers six different stories over the course of time and space, but the same core group of actors show up from one tale to the next — and not exactly in their most recognizable forms. Thanks to the magic of (a lot of) makeup, the actors transcend race, gender, and age to take on different guises and personalities. I've broken down each actor by the multiple characters they play in the film. Check it out.

Cloud Atlas Is Thought-Provoking, but . . .

Cloud Atlas is based on the bestselling book by David Mitchell, and its six interconnected stories follow many characters in different places and times, who are played by the same set of actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Sturgess.

Cloud Atlas is based on the bestselling book by David Mitchell, and its six interconnected stories follow many characters in different places and times, who are played by the same set of actors, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Sturgess. This element necessitates lots of makeup and prosthetics, but it's not necessarily one of the film's strengths. It is, however, one example of how ambitious the adaptation from the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer is. There are revolutions, love stories, and epic battles, but Cloud Atlas only fulfills some of its potential. Read on to find out how Cloud Atlas almost gets there.

  • The film is thought-provoking. There are lots of interesting themes throughout Cloud Atlas, particularly the idea that we are all connected and keep meeting in different lifetimes.
  • But . . . The filmmakers seem determined to make sure you know that the people are the same in different time periods, using the same actors over and over again. It's an interesting idea, but the execution is all wrong. Hanks, Berry, and Sturgess are made to look like different races, ages and sometimes, genders — but it's rarely convincing. So while you're supposed to be moved by the idea that two people who can't be together in one lifetime find each other in the next, it's too hard to focus on that when you're looking at an Asian version of Jim Sturgess.
  • The stories are compelling. I was invested in most of the stories, especially because the narrative jumps around through them, often ending on riveting cliffhangers.
  • But . . . The movie is too long. Cloud Atlas runs almost three hours, comprehensively covering each storyline. The problem is that not every story is so strong. There are a couple tales that could have been left out to make the movie shorter, without losing the overarching themes.

To find out what else I thought of Cloud Atlas, just keep reading.

Yes, Halle Berry Still Looks Amazing — Now We Need That Dress

Halle Berry stepped out for the premiere of her new film, Cloud Atlas, in LA last night with the looks and the dress that defied her 46 years.

Halle Berry stepped out for the premiere of her new film, Cloud Atlas, in LA last night with the looks and the dress that defied her 46 years. The actress makes it hard to believe she's a day over 25 — those legs, that glow. While we may never know the secret behind her superhuman good looks (is it just great genes?), we do know her stunning appearance last night had a lot to do with that little Dolce & Gabbana dress. Now we want one of our own. Thanks to the feminine fit and lacy metallic finish, it's just the kind of thing we'd throw on for our upcoming Holiday parties. Sure, it's on the sexier side, but you can still adopt the festive metallic sheen on a lace dress that's a little less body-conscious. We've rounded up a few of the standouts to get you one step closer to achieving Halle Berry bombshell status.
