Christopher Nolan released a statement today on the tragic shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO, on Friday.

Christopher Nolan released a statement today on the tragic shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO, on Friday. The film's director spoke on behalf of the cast and crew, saying, "I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community." He went on to say, "The movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me."

Warner Bros. also issued a statement, saying they were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident. The studio is also reportedly editing gun violence out of the theatrical trailer, and some TV stations are pulling ads for the film off the air.

Earlier Friday morning, President Barack Obama spoke about the shooting, telling victims that "we will be here for them as a nation" during a speech in Fort Myers, FL.

The suspected gunman, 24-year-old James Holmes, entered the theater through an exit door and released a gas canister before opening fire at the movie audience. He is currently in custody.

Christopher Nolan's Batman films have been darkly dramatic and staggeringly intense, and in the same way that The Dark Knight improved on the foundation laid by Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises reaches even further to become the perfect conclusion to this trilogy. Christian Bale is back as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman, but both of his identities have all but disappeared since Batman took the fall for the murder of Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight. It's eight years later, and Bruce is a weakened recluse who's still grieving the loss of his love, Rachel Dawes. The streets of Gotham, however, have been clean since the death of Dent, and Batman's patrol isn't as necessary. It's the perfect opportunity for a new villain to strike.

The terrorist Bane (a masked, bulked-up Tom Hardy) wants to unseat the privileged citizens of Gotham as well as physically destroy the city, creating a threat to the very survival of Gotham. But The Dark Knight Rises isn't about Batman defeating a foe; it's the story of how he, as a defeated man, loses everything and finds the strength to pull himself back up to fight. Bruce Wayne's character development is what makes this film moving. But that doesn't mean that Nolan neglects any other responsibility in making this a heart-pounding thrill-ride; the visual effects are eye-popping, and the plot twists are as jaw-dropping as the action sequences. Nolan doesn't let down fans of his series; The Dark Knight Rises is a stunning conclusion to a fantastic trilogy.

The Dark Knight Rises cast made an entrance at their big premiere in NYC last night. Leading ladies Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard both looked glamorous in white, with Anne wearing a Prabal Gurung gown, with Kwiat jewels, and Marion in a short Christian Dior dress. Their costar Christian Bale was dapper in a suit and vest as he posed with wife Sibi on their way into the event. Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman were also on hand, as was actress Juno Temple. Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester showed up for the screening but skipped the carpet, while her small-screen costars Michelle Trachtenberg and Penn Badgley both stopped for cameras.

Anne has been on the go promoting her Summer blockbuster ahead of its release this Friday, and to get you ready, we're taking a look back at all The Dark Knight Rises pictures. Anne Hathaway smiled alongside her The Dark Knight Rises leading men Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Saturday while watching their director Christopher Nolan accept an award. Christopher, the director behind the latest Batman series, as well as blockbusters like Inception, was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their third and final Batman movie is out on July 20 — before then, check out all the Dark Knight Rises pictures.

In addition to Anne, Christian, and Joseph, other Dark Knight stars like Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman turned out, too. Anne posed next to Christian and happily got a big bear hug from her pal JGL. Michael Caine also has his prints on the sidewalk in LA, and he reflected on Christopher's momentous occasion. Michael said of Christopher Nolan's honor, "You never give [Christopher] any tips. You assume he knows better than you at everything, and he does."

Other Summer blockbuster stars were also on hand for the celebration including Magic Mike's Matthew McConaughey, The Dark Knight Rises's director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, and That's My Boy funny men Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg.

Athletes Kobe Bryant and Aaron Rodgers proudly accepted top honors and joined the crowd in applauding NFL hopeful Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed from a neck injury, during his acceptance of this year's Guysman Trophy. Engaged couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell took the stage to present Emma, wearing Versace, with a pair of golden antlers for her win as Guys Choice hot and funny actress. Emma's adding another statue to her collection tomorrow at the MTV Movie Awards. She's expected to be on hand as a presenter, in addition to taking home the first-ever trailblazer award. The 63rd annual DGA Awards brought together tons of big names in Hollywood last night. The King's Speech took home the top honors, proving that this award season it really is anyone's game when it comes to best picture. Natalie Portman stuck by The Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky and spoke about getting all dressed up during her pregnancy, saying, "There's so much going on, I'll just try not to trip at any point! I'm trying to protect my future child." Natalie opted for Michael Kors and Aldo heels for the Saturday evening event, and she'll be doing it all again today for the SAGs. Armie Hammer and Andrew Garfield represented the guys of The Social Network while Jesse Eisenberg was across the country hosting SNL with special guest Mark Zuckerberg. Leonardo DiCaprio chatted with Clint Eastwood, and Amy Adams celebrated another huge week, which included receiving an Oscar nomination. Her costar Melissa Leo got a nod in the same category, and their The Fighter's David O. Russell says picking a winner between the two would be like "living through Sophie's Choice." Well this is certainly a long way from The Princess Diaries: Anne Hathaway is confirmed to star in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises as Catwoman. Hathaway beat out a slew of other A-list actresses for the role, though most of you thought she'd be better suited as Bruce Wayne's love interest (that part is still currently up for grabs).

I have mixed feelings about this news; there's no denying that Hathaway is a good actress, but I wasn't wowed by her last cartoon-ish character role as The White Queen in Alice in Wonderland. Then again, it will definitely be interesting to see Hathaway show off a bad girl side for a change.

As an added bonus to this news, Nolan has also revealed that Tom Hardy will play Bane, an escaped prisoner who's all jacked up on wonder drugs. So how do you feel about these latest developments?
