Alicia Debuts "Typewriter," Justin Teams Up With Nicki, and Rihanna Wins Then Loses to Chris Brown at BET Awards

The BET Awards celebrated the largest names in hip-hop and R&B with wild fashion, high-energy dance routines, and a mini scandal at LA's Shrine Auditorium last night.

The BET Awards celebrated the largest names in hip-hop and R&B with wild fashion, high-energy dance routines, and a mini scandal at LA's Shrine Auditorium last night. The show kicked off with a mashup of hits from Mary J. Blige before the awards were dished out to the night's winners. Taking a break from touring with Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj joined Justin Bieber to present the best male hip-hop artist award to Kanye West. Nicki didn't go home empty handed as she took home the honors for best female hip-hop artist. Justin was without his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, but he was in the company of pals Jaden and Willow Smith, who stepped out with their parents, Will and Jada, and the siblings shared the win in the young stars category.

The night was full of incredible performances including a medley of hits and the debut of a new single, "Typewriter," from Alicia Keys, who was also marking the 10-year anniversary of her mega hit album Songs in A Minor. Most of the evening went down without a hitch, but there was a critical mix-up in BET's viewer's choice category when Chris Brown was announced the winner, then it was switched to Rihanna and Drake. Turns out Chris was the actual winner, and the error was due to teleprompter confusion, though Drake admittedly felt "awkward" about the error. Chris finished out the evening with four awards while Jennifer Hudson grabbed the win for best female R&B artist and Patti LaBelle was recognized with a lifetime achievement award — get the full list of BET winners here!

Why Bruno Mars Wants to Be a Billionaire

Bruno Mars partnered up with Travie McCoy to write and sing the hit song, "Billionaire."

Bruno Mars partnered up with Travie McCoy to write and sing the hit song, "Billionaire." Here's what drove the crooner to write the song:

"The inspiration behind ‘Billionaire’ was, I was tired of spending half my day worrying about what I can and can’t spend on whatever. I wouldn’t have to worry about, you know, ‘I can’t afford to get breakfast, so I’ll wait until lunchtime to eat.’ If I was a billionaire, none of that would matter. I’d be eating diamond cereal."

The appeal behind never having to worry about money is definitely undeniable, but I can't help but thinking that with great wealth comes a whole other set of problems as well. Problems aside, if you were a billionaire, what kind of lavish items would you be enjoying?

Announcing the 2011 Grammy Award Nominees!

We're slowly inching closer to award season, and tonight we learned who scored nominations for the biggest ceremony in the music industry: the Grammys.

We're slowly inching closer to award season, and tonight we learned who scored nominations for the biggest ceremony in the music industry: the Grammys. Last year was all about the ladies, but this time around the men are stepping up. Eminem got the most nods with eight, including song of the year and record of the year, while newcomer Bruno Mars nipped at his heels with seven nominations (guess he's not just popular among the Glee club). Speaking of the gleeks, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the cast was recognized all on their own, for their "Regionals version" of "Don't Stop Believin'" and best soundtrack.

Just because the men came out on top this year doesn't mean the ladies won't be represented. As usual, Lady Gaga got plenty of recognition, along with Katy Perry and Rihanna. Other nominees that got me smiling are Arcade Fire, who picked up three noms including album of the year, and The Black Keys and Cee-Lo Green, who each picked up four nods apiece. Oh, and even the Twi-hards of the world have a reason to celebrate: the soundtrack for Eclipse scored a nod for best soundtrack.

There's a lot to digest before the gramophone trophies are distributed on February 13, so check out the full list of nominees when you read more
