Were You the Favored Child?

Parents aren't supposed to have favorites, but they totally do.

Parents aren't supposed to have favorites, but they totally do. Sometimes it's as simple as birth order and personality, as complex as a personality connection, or as unfair as gender. So let's talk about unfairness. A survey, which spoke to 2,500 moms in the UK, determined sons really are mommas' boys.

Though one-half of moms (or should I say mums) acknowledge it's unfair to treat children differently, 90 percent confessed to doing so. They're twice as likely to be more critical of daughters, resorting to Britishisms like "stroppy" (touchy) to describe girls. Meanwhile boys are "funny," "playful," and, of course, "cheeky."

So whether you have brothers, sisters, or both, tell us if you felt like the favored child by either parent. Or not.

Brothers Keep Sisters From Growing Up Too Fast

Sisters can make you happier, and now researchers say brothers can keep you young.

Sisters can make you happier, and now researchers say brothers can keep you young. Girls with brothers don't grow up as fast as their bro-less peers — and it's not just the protective older brother factor. While older brothers delay the onset of menstruation by nearly a year, having a younger brother will postpone your first sexual experience by more than a year, according to the new Australian study.

So why do brothers have such a powerful impact? The study explains that older male siblings may take up parental resources or cause psychological stress that delays the onset of puberty. And when older sisters have to help take care of their little brothers it delays their behavioral maturation, pushing back the age that they'll lose their virginity.

If you were a late bloomer, did you also happen to have a brother? Do you think he had anything to do with it?

Box Office: The Blind Side Tackles New Moon

Looks like New Moon should have kept an eye on its blind side!

Looks like New Moon should have kept an eye on its blind side! The surprise hit has been nipping at the Twilight sequel's heels since they were both released two weeks ago, but this is the first weekend that the football drama actually took the top spot at the box office. The Blind Side earned $20.4 million, while New Moon pulled in $15.7 million.

In its first weekend out, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire's sibling thriller Brothers nabbed the third spot with $9.7 million, while A Christmas Carol continues to bring in audiences with $7.5 million. Rounding out the top five is Robin Williams's comedy Old Dogs, with a $6.9 million haul.

Jason Reitman's Up in the Air also had an impressive showing, taking in $1.2 million. The film was only open in 15 theaters, proving that all the hype is already paying off for the George Clooney dramedy.

Brothers: Oh, Brother. . .

A remake of a Danish film, Brothers seems like potential Oscar bait — talented actors in a timely story of post-traumatic stress disorder for American soldiers.

A remake of a Danish film, Brothers seems like potential Oscar bait — talented actors in a timely story of post-traumatic stress disorder for American soldiers. It has the most honorable of intentions to show the emotional toll that these men and women endure, but Brothers gets overwhelmed by the task and tries too hard.

Tobey Maguire plays Capt. Sam Cahill, a respected Marine and pride of his parents. After a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, he's pronounced dead, leaving behind his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and two daughters. Stepping in to help the family is his younger brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), an ex-con with enough charm to make up for what he lacks in responsibility. As he spends time at the house with Grace, they turn to each other in their grief, blurring the line between in-law and love interest.

The thing is, Sam isn't dead. He was captured as a P.O.W., and when he comes home, he's a ticking time bomb. Paranoid over the burgeoning relationship between his brother and his wife and coping with memories of Afghanistan, Sam is skin and bones — a walking ghost of his former self.

Who's More Your Type: Tobey Maguire or Jake Gyllenhaal?

In the movie Brothers (out today) Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal play two brothers in an intense battle for the love of Natalie Portman's character. After Tobey's character goes missing in action in Afghanistan, his wife, played by Natalie Portman, gets very close to her brother-in-law, played by Jake. As you can imagine, things get pretty complicated when Tobey's character returns home unexpectedly. But let's keep things simple for our sake: if you could have your pick between both of these actors which one would you choose?
