Tampon Ads Can't Tackle What TV's Been Doing For Decades

Tampon ads are filled with euphemisms, and feature women in varying shades of white frolicking outdoors.

Tampon ads are filled with euphemisms, and feature women in varying shades of white frolicking outdoors. Nobody knows their secret, and really that's all anyone's ever asked of a tampon. But now Kotex is stirring things up with a new campaign called Break the Cycle. It parodies typical feminine-product commercials by talking openly and frankly about periods. Too frankly for TV. The New York Times reports three networks rejected the ad, and only one of those networks accepted it after the word "vagina" was switched out for "down there."

Now that a company is finally trying to challenge the status quo, and maybe peddle what it believes are the finest applicators around, television won't have it. Yet TV shows have been doing a better job talking about periods for years. Here are clips from three shows — Blossom, 7th Heaven, and The Cosby Show — that, despite overuse of the word "woman," do a remarkable job of talking about menstruation.

Back to Cool: Blossom

I always appreciated Blossom Russo's haphazardly cool style.

I always appreciated Blossom Russo's haphazardly cool style. With partner in crime Six, the two ruled the early '90s in their funky floral hats, vests, crazy prints, and cool loafers. I especially adored Blossom's knack for wearing oversize blazers and mismatched outfits. Indeed, Blossom was in her own fashion world — who would have thought her styling tricks are some of today's hottest trends? Fun fact: Blossom, aka Mayim Bialik, left Hollywood to get a PhD in neuroscience from UCLA. Double awesome.

TV Tonight: What Not to Wear Takes on Blossom

A lot of the women who end up on TLC's What Not to Wear are stuck wearing the style of a certain decade, and it becomes Stacy and Clinton's job to snap them out of it.

A lot of the women who end up on TLC's What Not to Wear are stuck wearing the style of a certain decade, and it becomes Stacy and Clinton's job to snap them out of it. I'm always curious how these women come to cling to styles of decades past, whether it's a steadfast commitment to acid-washed jeans or an unwillingness to give up the Doc Martens. But it's pretty clear how the makeover recipient on tonight's season premiere came to get stuck in her style rut, considering that, well, she once played Blossom.

That's right: Mayim Bialik is tonight's guest! In the episode, she claims she dresses the way she does because she's a busy mom with kids, which is a totally fair (and true) excuse. However, once Stacy and Clinton dig into her wardrobe, they discover she's still wearing clothes from her days playing the teenage style icon (or style tragedy, depending on your point of view, but my point of view is that I owned a Blossom-style hat with a big ol' flower on it).

I was a little skeptical when I previewed this episode. I didn't want Stacy and Clinton to turn Bialik into a cookie-cutter Hollywood type. Happily, they totally show her how to update her trademark look so that it fits her current lifestyle. She ends up looking cute and age-appropriate, and it's loads of nostalgic fun.

You can check out a fun clip in which Stacy and Clinton make her do the dance from the opening credits in exchange for keeping an item of clothing when you read more

Look of the Day

Look of the Day: '90s Babe

The wind caught mschaub2's hair at the perfect time.

The wind caught mschaub2's hair at the perfect time. This adds to her cool, '90s babe outfit. There's nothing more iconic of this era than a jean jacket and floral dress — remember Blossom? I also like how she updated her ensemble by donning a pair of Alexander Wang-esque fringe platform sandals. C-ute!

Here's what she has on:

Jacket: Gap
Dress: Unknown
Booties: Forever 21

Congrats to mschaub2!

Everyone else, submit your looks and I might feature you on FabSugar!

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays.

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can also add RocknRolla, The Rocker, and Kirk Cameron's Fireproof (have you seen the trailer?!) to your queue.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
I love Penelope Cruz as an actress and I'm glad her performance in this Woody Allen flick is earning her lots of attention — including an Oscar nod. The movie follows Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), two girlfriends who set off for a Summer in Barcelona. They soon befriend a famous painter, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), who is known for his volatile relationship with his ex-wife, Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz). Things get wacky when a love-square gets underway between all these women and Juan.

Oddly, there isn't a single special feature available with this DVD. Not a one. Boo!

Last week I challenged you to think up a new cast for one of my favorite childhood sitcoms, Blossom. Finding just the right gal to play the smart and (arguably) fashion-forward Blossom Russo is actually pretty hard! She's not totally the girl next door and is kind of an old soul. That's why I think LolaSvelt is on the right track with an actress like Ellen Page in that role. I can also see Emma Roberts playing Blossom as JennyJen15 suggests because she seems really intelligent.

As for the boys, I really love Lorelei LeFae's idea for John Stamos to play the song-writing dad. Hello? That's so perfect! I loved the character Joey and think it doesn't get more clever than chicbutgeeky's idea to have another Lawrence boy, Andrew, take over the role.

In the end I went with a well-rounded cast that even includes an adorable idea for the recasting of Blossom's BFF, Six. Congrats to cordata! To see who cordata thought up, along with a new cast photo, read more

Guess who's coming to DVD for the first time? Oh, I guess the picture gave it away: Blossom! Seasons one and two will hit stores on Jan. 27. In light of this momentous occasion, I thought we could try our hand at recasting the show.

Who could play level-headed teen with a flair for fashion, Blossom Russo (originally played by Mayim Bialik)? And then there's her family: Brothers Joey ("Whoa!") and recovering alcoholic and drug addict Anthony, and their dad Nick, who's doing the best he can to raise the three kids. Finally, the series really would not have been the same without Blossom's energetic friend Six (played by Jenna von Oÿ who was really impressive at talking at the speed of light).

Leave your entry in the comment section below, and I'll pick one winner to feature Tuesday, Jan. 6, complete with a "new" cast photo. To see a list of characters to recast and a photo of the BuzzSugar t-shirt, read more

Flashback: Joey Lawrence on Blossom

Remember Joey Lawrence of Blossom fame?

Remember Joey Lawrence of Blossom fame? (One word: WHOA!) He's going to be our Flashback of the Week and we're going to feature as much Joey Lawrence as you can take. Just for starters, the show's theme song. In my opinionation, it's awesome.
