Fall TV Update: More Better With You and No Ordinary Family

As we get deeper into the Fall TV season, the networks have been cleaning house.

As we get deeper into the Fall TV season, the networks have been cleaning house. ABC recently announced that it's pulling The Whole Truth from its schedule, but there's still good news: the network is also giving full season orders to No Ordinary Family and one of my series to watch, Better With You. Looks like I have some new additions to my Fall TV scorecard!

TV Show Check-In: Better With You

My regular TV show check-ins have begun, and after giving early evaluations to dramas The Event and Hellcats, I'm now going for a sitcom: ABC's Better With You.

My regular TV show check-ins have begun, and after giving early evaluations to dramas The Event and Hellcats, I'm now going for a sitcom: ABC's Better With You.

Better With You was one show for the Fall season that I saw a lot of potential in — despite its multicamera, laugh-track formula. I'd hoped that the combo of good writing plus charming stars JoAnna Garcia and Jennifer Finnegan would make the format a nonissue, but unfortunately, the first couple of episodes have suffered from sitcom conventions: lame plots and cheesy jokes. Also, the relatable relationship issues that were in the pilot became patronizing by the second episode. That said, it's still early in the season, so the series has time to prove itself as cute and funny. What do you think of the new comedy? Has it found a home in your Wednesday night lineup?

TV Tonight: The Triumphant Return of Modern Family and Cougar Town

I've been missing my Wednesday comedy fix for months now, but thankfully that's all about to change!

I've been missing my Wednesday comedy fix for months now, but thankfully that's all about to change! Tonight, ABC is back with sophomore seasons of two of my favorite comedies, Cougar Town and Modern Family. Cougar Town will have a very special premiere thanks to one amazing guest star, and even Busy Philipps herself confirmed that there's a lot of fun ahead in season two. Meanwhile, Modern Family returns with even more hijinks, which includes more PDA, some bike shorts, and a princess castle for little Lily.

As the icing on the cake, ABC is adding a brand new comedy to its lineup, and it's one that I've already been gushing over. JoAnna Garcia's Better With You premieres at 8:30 p.m. Not only is it one of my top 5 new shows to watch, but it's also got a new heartthrob to gush over.

If all that is still not piquing your interest, there are three more shows for you to try on for size. NBC debuts J.J. Abrams's new spy series Undercovers, and at 10 p.m. you can take your pick of new lawyer shows: ABC's got The Whole Truth and CBS unveils The Defenders with Jerry O'Connell.

It's a long night of TV. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll bang your gavel.

Pilot Scoop: Better With You

My pilot scoops are here to let you know about the buzziest new Fall TV shows so you can start programming your DVRs now.

My pilot scoops are here to let you know about the buzziest new Fall TV shows so you can start programming your DVRs now. Today I'm tackling ABC comedy Better With You.

What it's about: Three couples within one family are at different relationship stages. Younger daughter Mia (JoAnna Garcia) is newly engaged to a guy she only recently started dating; her older sister Maddie (Jennifer Finnegan) is unmarried and has been dating her boyfriend for nine years. Their parents (Debra Jo Rupp and Kurt Fuller) have been married for over 30 years and have settled into an established, staid marriage.

Where it works: Garcia is always a charismatic everygirl in her TV roles, and her character Mia is no different. In fact, Garcia makes her even more sympathetic than another actress would, as she's playing a young woman with flaws who many of us can relate to. (Plus, the chemistry she has with costar Finnegan as sisters is uncanny.)

Where it doesn't: The multicamera, laugh-tracked sitcom is a dying breed for good reason. The canned laughter has me cringing at a lot of jokes where I wish I could just be laughing.

Am I hooked? Yes. Despite the dips of cheesiness, Better With You is a breezily funny relationship comedy that doesn't demand a lot of commitment.

When it's on: The series premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 8:30 p.m.
