Oh BSG, How I Miss Thee

It's been almost a year since the last episode of Battlestar Galactica aired, and I still miss it.

It's been almost a year since the last episode of Battlestar Galactica aired, and I still miss it. The TV movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan helped kill my withdrawals a little bit, and even though it's taken a few weeks, I am proud to call myself a full-fledged Caprica fan.

But it's little nuggets like this tribute video that make a BSG-less existence that more bearable. I give you Galatica: Sabotage — get ready to rock!

FABTV: Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right to Party"

My heart dropped when I heard the news Adam Yauch of the Beasties was diagnosed with cancer.

My heart dropped when I heard the news Adam Yauch of the Beasties was diagnosed with cancer. The Beastie Boys are one of my favorite all-time bands; I have seen them live more than any other group. And, I was looking forward to seeing them this Summer in San Francisco. All tour dates have been canceled. My heart goes out to Adam, the Boys, and their families. Let's wish them some loving vibes by enjoying one of their funniest vids. The quintessential party song, Fight For Your Right to Party, is early Beasties — they were acne-ridden, rebellious, raw. No wonder they resonated so well with the youngins itching for some crazy fun. Watching the Boys and their tough friends overrun a couple of geeks house is pure comedy. You gotta fight, for your right, to paaaaaarty.

Halloween

A Fabby Halloween: Beastie Girls

Beastie Boys fans, this one's for you.

Beastie Boys fans, this one's for you. Throw on some dope kicks, fly jeans, grab a boombox, and Hey Lady yourself around town like Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock. Only, the girl version. Long live the Beastie Boys. If you and your friends are going to authentically portray them, you must not only look the part ("Rock my Adidas, never rock Fila"), but also act it. The Boys are known for their vigilante attitude toward interviewers so your night should be filled with ample attitude ("Cause I'm mellow like ja-lello, cool like lemonade"). To add further flavor, blast "Fight For Your Right" from your ghetto blaster. And some final Beastie words of wisdom: "So this is what I've got to say to you all, be true to yourself and you will never fall."

Madonna, Beasties Nominated for Rock Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is wasting no time in recognizing Madonna and the Beastie Boys.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is wasting no time in recognizing Madonna and the Beastie Boys. They're among the nine artists nominated for the new class of inductees in just their first year of eligibility for the honor.

They join seven other nominees from all across the musical map: John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five. Cohen, Bambaataa, Summer and the Ventures are also first-time nominees. Five of them will be chosen to be inducted into the hall in March.

To be eligible, artists must have released their first singles no later than 1982. Madonna first hit the scene that year with "Everybody," while the Beasties released their first EP, Pollywog Stew.

It makes sense that both Madonna and the Beasties would end up in the hall eventually, but I think it's great to see them recognized so soon. If I were a voter, those two would definitely make my final five. Of the nine nominees, which five would you want to get in?

Fabcon: Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola's style can best be described as unfussy, cool and classic.

Sofia Coppola's style can best be described as unfussy, cool and classic. We are talking about one of Marc Jacob's muses here (lucky!). While one may point out she wears a lot of black, 'tis true, but so do other icons such as Kate Moss and Diana Vreeland. Black is one of the truest colors of fashion, and as every woman knows, it's slimming too. But I just love it when Sofia does play with color; it's usually in the form of bolds such as red or pink, or understated with off-white.

The daughter of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia is talented in other areas than fashion. She is an accomplished film director, actress, producer and Academy Award-winning screenwriter. I would also like to point out that she is the first American woman and third woman in history to be nominated for an Academy Award for Directing.

Sofia is just so cool. She is considered a pop culture icon within the indie music and film communities, in Paris and Tokyo especially. It figures she would have fashion sense - as a child she stayed in the wardrobe department of her father's films, and did you know that in high school, she interned with Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel? As well, in 1998 she co-founded the clothing line Milkfed in Japan with friend Stephanie Hayman and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. I so remember Milkfed! It was very Beastie girlie - it was sold alongside the Beastie Boys clothing line X-Large back in the day.

While The Virgin Suicides continues to be my favorite film by Sofia, it's just so beautifully melancholy, Marie Antoinette also provided some serious eye, and ear, candy. What's next for Sofia? I can't wait to see.

Song of the Day: Beastie Boys, "B For My Name"

I've always grooved happily to the Beastie Boys' instrumental offerings, like "Sabrosa" from Ill Communication, and I've waited anxiously for the hip-hop veterans' follow-up to 2004's To the 5 Burroughs.

I've always grooved happily to the Beastie Boys' instrumental offerings, like "Sabrosa" from Ill Communication, and I've waited anxiously for the hip-hop veterans' follow-up to 2004's To the 5 Burroughs. But even so, I'm not sure how I feel about the Boys making an all-instrumental album, which is what they've done with The Mix-Up, hitting stores today.

Everything I've heard off the album is pretty topnotch: funky and weird, full of creatively fused influences and slithery beats. I particularly like the album's opener, "B For My Name," with its eerie organ and sneaky xylophone or glockenspiel or whatever it is. But one reason I've always loved the Beastie Boys' instrumental numbers is that they provide such chill foils to the more hyper hip-hop numbers. That effect is lost when all the rhyme-less songs are lined up in a neat little row. Tell me what you think about the whole idea, and listen to "B For My Name" when you read more

FABTV: Beastie Boys "So What'cha Want"

I have to share my excitement with you all: I'm going to see one of my all-time favorite bands, The Beastie Boys, this summer!

I have to share my excitement with you all: I'm going to see one of my all-time favorite bands, The Beastie Boys, this summer! This will be my fourth time seeing them and I'm so psyched to whip out my Adidas and old-school gear for them.

Thanks to the Beasties, white boys gained coolness. Seriously, these white boys from NYC encouraged several trends: beanies, super fresh message tee shirts, saggy pants, flannels and who can forget Mike D and his love for oversized, goofy sunglasses? Did you know they even had their own clothing line called X-Large? My adolescent Betties and I shopped, hung out, and swooned over the fine shop boys at X-Large in Berkeley, CA. The line has lived on, but the Beasties moved on to bigger and better things...like freeing Tibet, settling down and just remaining ill.

Here's one of my all time favorite Beastie videos from their 1992 album Check Your Head. The funky dance moves around :30 is my favorite part...sit back, relax and enjoy the FABTV.

Webby Awards Draw Web And Hollywood Celebrities

One of my favorite geeky girls, Jessica Rose, walked last night's Webby Awards red carpet amid a mix of web and Hollywood celebrities.

One of my favorite geeky girls, Jessica Rose, walked last night's Webby Awards red carpet amid a mix of web and Hollywood celebrities. Rose, who is known to the world as YouTube phenomenon Lonelygirl15, will make her major film debut in the upcoming "I Know Who Killed Me" flick with Lindsay Lohan. I am pleased to say Rose already has her geek chic red carpet look down. I didn't make it to the ceremony - although geeksugar was an honoree! - but FabSugar rocked the house by paying homage to Chanel in her acceptance speech.

David Bowie accepted the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award and my faves Mike Diamond, Adam Yauch and Adam Horovitz of The Beastie Boys made a rare appearance.
