20 Ways to Channel Carey Mulligan's Sweet Schoolgirl Style in An Education

It's that time again!
Carey Mulligan Style in An Education

It's that time again! We're kicking off our yearly back-to-school coverage with a spotlight on some of the best cinematic style moments, just in time for you to start culling your weekday wardrobes. First, we're schooling you on how to steal elements of Carey Mulligan's covetable style in 2009's An Education. Carey plays Jenny Mellor, a 16-year-old living in the London suburb of Twickenham. The film follows Jenny's journey from uniformed schoolgirl to bright, superstylish young lady, who ultimately gets swept off her feet by an older man (played expertly by Peter Sarsgaard).

As Jenny gets seduced by a new, grown-up lifestyle, her style evolves from button-downs and ties to glamorous LBDs, jacquard shift dresses, pillbox hats, and statement jewels. Carey's ladylike Londoner style in the movie was chic, age-appropriate, and a perfect representation for the era — not to mention incredibly easy to copy. All you need to do is incorporate pieces like A-line dresses and coats, pretty floral prints, and crisp white button-down blouses into your wardrobe to achieve her sophisticated, youthful elegance. Click through now to get an education on Carey Mulligan's striking sartorial sense in the film, and see how to elevate your look for classes this year.

An Education

Despite its high profile as an Oscar nominee, An Education was one of the year's most understated dramas. Carey Mulligan stars as Jenny in her breakout role of a 1960s student who tastes a life of sophistication when she's seduced by an older man, played by Peter Sarsgaard.

This captivating, coming-of-age movie was one of my favorites last year, and I plan on renting (OK, buying) this movie now that it's available on DVD. The extras include a commentary track from director Lone Scherfig, Mulligan, and Sarsgaard, eleven deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, and the original trailer.

Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. exudes many charms as the title character in Guy Ritchie's slick retelling of Sherlock Holmes. RDJ, who won a Golden Globe for the part, is hot, ripped, and it's not necessarily costar Rachel McAdams he has the most chemistry with — it's his sidekick Watson, played by Jude Law. The bromance was my favorite thing about the movie, but it's also packed to the brim with action, making it a highly entertaining rental. The lone extra is a making-of clip titled "Sherlock Holmes: Reinvented."

Buzz's Oscar Nominee Predictions: Best Picture

We're finally closing in on the big day: the announcement of nominees for this year's Oscars!
Nominee Predictions for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Picture

We're finally closing in on the big day: the announcement of nominees for this year's Oscars! It all goes down this Tuesday, and I've been counting down my picks for who might end up on the Academy's final ballot. A few of the contenders seem pretty obvious — James Cameron for a Best Director nod? Well, obviously! But now let's head into murkier territory with the Best Picture race. This category seems more up in the air than the others (pardon the pun), especially as this year marks the first time since 1943 that we'll have ten films facing off for the title. Here's who I'm thinking will (or should) make the cut.
