Albert Nobbs

Glenn Close scored an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a woman posing as a man in 19th century Ireland. Forced to assume the dress and mannerisms of a man to secure a job as a butler in order to survive in the oppressive times, Albert finds his arrangement shaken up by the arrival of a stranger with a secret (Janet McTeer) and her involvement with her fellow servants (played by Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson). Deleted scenes and commentary by director Rodrigo Garcia and Glenn Close are included with the DVD.

One for the Money

Katherine Heigl is Stephanie Plum, card-carrying Jersey girl and badass, in the film adaptation of Janet Evanovich's popular murder mystery series. Out-of-work Plum gets a gig working for her cousin as a bail bondswoman, and despite her lack of experience, she's got a knack for hunting down perps. Her biggest challenge is whether to get back with her momentary high school sweetheart, Joe Morelli, or give in to a fellow recovery agent's charms. Extras include featurettes and a gag reel.

Glenn Close Says She "Looked at Charlie Chaplin" to Pose as a Man in Albert Nobbs

In Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close stars as a 19th century woman posing as a man to get by.

In Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close stars as a 19th century woman posing as a man to get by. The movie is out today in wide release and just in time, because Close just earned an Oscar nomination for best actress for the role. Recently, I sat down with Close to chat about bringing the story from the stage to the screen, how she got into character, and why her costume was far more comfortable than what she wears for her TV series Damages.

Albert Nobbs Trailer: Glenn Close Knows How to Be a Gentleman

Glenn Close has tackled a lot of complex roles, but none have been quite like the part she plays in Albert Nobbs.

Glenn Close has tackled a lot of complex roles, but none have been quite like the part she plays in Albert Nobbs. She stars as the title character, a man in 19th-century Ireland who lives a simple life as a waiter in a busy hotel. He generally keeps to himself, but there's something he's really keeping to himself: his gender. Nobbs is actually a woman who has adopted the dress of a man to survive the social climate of the time, but even though Nobbs has kept up the charade for a while, he encounters a few complications. First, another man comes into Nobbs's life and challenges his identity, then Nobbs decides to pursue a dream of opening his own tobacco shop, which requires taking a wife, and he sets his sights on a maid in his hotel (Mia Wasikowska).

There's an undercurrent that Nobbs is on the verge of being discovered at all times, but the trailer plays up the lighter aspects of the story — especially the interesting "love triangle" that Nobbs gets involved in. But the real draw of the film is to see Close as a man, a role that's already earning her awards buzz. To get a hint of how convincingly she mans up, just watch the trailer when you keep reading
