Get the Look: Charlie's Sophisticated Boudoir

While watching A Single Man this past weekend, I fell in love with the interiors of the two main characters' homes. (If you missed the tours, see George's house here and Charlie's house here.)

Perhaps my favorite room of all was Charlie's bedroom, with the eyecatching ikat headboard. While most of the house is oriented toward entertaining, the bedroom is more of a private sanctuary. I thought readers might be interested in learning how to re-create the looks, so I've rounded up some materials and resources to let you get the look of Charlie's boudoir.

Of course, the first item you'll need is some ikat fabric for upholstering the headboard. This cotton/silk blend turquoise ikat fabric ($26 a yard) is a close match. Depending on what shape of headboard you want for your room, you can follow my tutorial or try this one from Prudent Baby.

House Tour: George Falconer's Glass House

This weekend I caught A Single Man on DVD.
Tour the Interiors of A Single Man's Glass House

This weekend I caught A Single Man on DVD. The film, which stars Colin Firth as gay British university professor George Falconer, is set in Los Angeles in 1962. The film's gorgeous look can be traced to the thoughtful work of director Tom Ford and the production design team behind Mad Men.

Of course, my eye was drawn to the gorgeous glass house where Falconer resides. Designed by architect John Lautner, the redwood, concrete, and glass residence opens to an oak forest, and is incredibly lovely. Have an extra $1.5 million to spare? Then you can put a bid on it. Otherwise, you can enjoy the architectural eye candy in this house tour.

What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Time to recharge your rental queue with some new DVD releases!

Time to recharge your rental queue with some new DVD releases! On today's docket: a cop thriller, an artsy drama, and a foreign flick with a ton of hype. Let's take a look, shall we?

A Single Man

In designer Tom Ford's directorial debut, Colin Firth stars as a professor grieving after the death of his partner (Matthew Goode); Julianne Moore plays a friend who is in love with him. I found the movie to be a little overdone in terms of acting and visual metaphors, but it is very pretty to look at. See it for Firth's Oscar-nominated performance — or if you can't wait until Mad Men's premiere later this month to see stylish '60s dressing. DVD extras include an audio commentary with Ford.

Brooklyn's Finest

Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, and Ethan Hawke star as three police officers who cross paths at a crime scene after vastly different experiences with corruption in the field. Despite the film's success at Sundance, many critics slammed the storyline for being too cliché. I'm willing to give it a chance, however, due to the strong cast. DVD extras include deleted scenes.

Fab Ad: Tom Ford Eyewear, Spring '10

Tom Ford took his single man out of his movie and into his eyewear campaign for Spring '10.

Tom Ford took his single man out of his movie and into his eyewear campaign for Spring '10. The ad, shot by Ford himself, features A Single Man star Nicholas Hoult, posing alongside hottie Carolyn Murphy. Nicholas looks ultra dapper in his white suit, and Carolyn emotes major scintillation wearing nothing but a pair of Tom Ford sunnies. What a hot Hollywood couple; do you agree?

Anne Brings Her Guy to Toast a Single Man With Julianne

Tom Ford played host last night at a special reception honoring his A Single Man at LA's La Dolce Vista.

Tom Ford played host last night at a special reception honoring his A Single Man at LA's La Dolce Vista. His leading lady Julianne Moore mingled with other guests like Anne Hathaway, her boyfriend Adam Shulman, and Selma Blair, who party-hopped over after an art event with Ashton Kutcher and Kirsten Dunst. Julianne is up for the Best Supporting Actress honor at Sunday's Golden Globes, while her costar Colin Firth is in the running for Best Dramatic Actor. Anne isn't up for any awards this season, but she will receive one unique honor — she's the 2010 recipient of Harvard's Hasty Pudding pot, following in the footsteps of Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger.

Tom Ford's 2009 Comeback

We've been waiting. And he has come . . . back. Though I think Tom is going to blow up (again) in '10, he got his ducks in a row this year. His store in NYC, menswear line, fragrance, and optical lines continue to thrive, but he made his directorial movie debut and announced his return to womenswear. No doubt Tom has a keen aesthetic, but he also has a smart business sense. And, he's real easy on the eyes. For the whole scoop, follow me . . .

Tom Ford wasn't named himself, but Colin Firth is up for Best Actor in a Drama and Julianne Moore for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama (the score also received a nod) — so he'll assuredly be at the awards in support. And don't be surprised if Julianne shows up to the ceremony Jan. 17 in another Tom Ford custom dress. [Variety]
