What Happened? Movies That Take Place Over One Crazy Night

21 and Over, which is now playing in theaters, is the latest film to showcase an evening gone awry.

21 and Over, which is now playing in theaters, is the latest film to showcase an evening gone awry. Having a movie take place over one night may sound restricting, but it's a mechanism that's made for some amazing movies, starting with 1973's American Graffiti and heading all the way through to last year's sleeper hit Project X. Before you head out to see 21 and Over, take a minute to appreciate some of the wild and crazy nights that have come before it.

Box Office: Jack the Giant Slayer Scales the Box Office

Jack the Giant Slayer won the box office this weekend with $28 million, but it's not exactly a great feat: the Nicholas Hoult flick had a huge budget and didn't quite achieve blockbuster status.

Jack the Giant Slayer won the box office this weekend with $28 million, but it's not exactly a great feat: the Nicholas Hoult flick had a huge budget and didn't quite achieve blockbuster status. Identity Thief finished second and added $9.7 million to its growing total. The weekend's other new releases, 21 and Over and The Last Exorcism Part II, reaped $9 million and $8.3 million, respectively. Rounding out the top five was Dwayne Johnson's Snitch, which took in $7.7 million.

21 and Over Is Funny, But . . .

With spring break season just a few weeks away, the release of new comedy 21 and Over is a perfectly timed cross section of raucous college life.

With spring break season just a few weeks away, the release of new comedy 21 and Over is a perfectly timed cross section of raucous college life. It's an entertaining, raunchy romp that follows two high school BFFs determined to give their third musketeer a proper 21st birthday — and, naturally, things quickly go awry. So what's the downside? Ultimately, it's just another "one crazy night" movie that's been done a million times before. Here are more of the pros and cons of 21 and Over:

  • All three of the male leads are talented and fun to watch. The film showcases Justin Chon, Miles Teller, and Skylar Astin, better known as "that guy from Twilight," "that guy from Footloose," and "that guy from Pitch Perfect," respectively. But the fact that these guys are relatively unknown is a strength, since you don't already know what to expect from them. Chon is believable as Jeff Chang, the straight-man-gone-wild, and Astin is crush-worthy as Casey, the preppy (if not smug) goody-two-shoes of the group. But it's Teller who steals the show as the wisecracking slacker Miller. His relentless one-liners are reminiscent of Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill, and his comedic timing is impeccable.
  • But . . . The rest of the characters are one-note caricatures that are kind of annoying. We're talking ridiculously overbearing parents, aggressive male cheerleaders, and stereotypical sorority girls — none of which seem even remotely realistic.

21 & Over Trailer: A New Generation Parties Hard and Gets Down

Take The Hangover, mix in one part Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and one part Superbad, and you've got the trailer for 21 & Over.

Take The Hangover, mix in one part Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and one part Superbad, and you've got the trailer for 21 & Over. Miles Teller (Footloose) and Skylar Astin star as old high school buddies intent on getting their fellow best friend (Twilight's Justin Chon) drunk on the night of his 21st birthday. Though he's initially resistant because his intimidating father reminds him of an important exam the next day, he eventually gives in and winds up dancing in women's underwear on top of a car. You know, the usual hijinks.

Does the world need another one-crazy-night movie? Maybe not. But did this trailer make me laugh out loud? Sure did. I'm not a fan of slow-motion vomit, but the "getting down on top of the car" part is hilarious. It should come as no surprise that 21 & Over comes from the writers of The Hangover, so we might be in able hands. Also, Astin was really cute in Pitch Perfect, and I'm excited to see him get some more screen time. The movie opens on March 1, and you can see the trailer after the jump.
